How to Fix a Disney+ Black Screen on a Browser, TV, Phone, or Streaming Device

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A Disney+ black screen can come from a stalled app, an unsupported or outdated browser, a filtering extension, or an HDMI/HDCP display problem. First identify whether the whole app is blank, only the video is black, or the problem happens only on an external display; then try the matching fix instead of resetting everything.

Identify where the black screen occurs

These symptoms point to different causes. Note whether sound plays, whether menus load, and whether the problem follows a particular device, title, browser, or display.

What you see Useful first test Likely cause category
The Disney+ webpage or app is entirely blank On a computer, test a private window with extensions disabled. Browser failure, content filter, extension, or security software.
Menus load, but the movie or episode is black Restart Disney+ and try another title. Playback session, app state, or video rendering.
Audio plays, but there is no picture Test the device’s built-in display or another supported browser. Video rendering, protected playback, or the display connection.
It goes black only in full-screen mode Test windowed playback and temporarily check the browser’s hardware-acceleration setting. Browser rendering, overlays, or display configuration.
It goes black only on a second screen Disconnect the display, then bypass adapters and receivers. HDMI, HDCP, adapter, or display-chain issue.
Several Disney+ devices fail Try another network and compare with another streaming service. Possible account, service, ISP, DNS, or network issue.

Try the low-risk fixes first

  1. Close and reopen Disney+. Fully quit the app rather than leaving it suspended. On a computer, close the Disney+ tab and quit the browser before reopening it. Close other demanding programs or browser windows, then retry playback. Disney recommends restarting the browser or app and closing other programs as part of its blank-screen troubleshooting.
  2. Try another title. If only one movie or episode fails, check a different title before changing device settings. This helps distinguish a title-specific playback issue from a broader app or device problem.
  3. Update Disney+ and the device. Install available app and operating-system or firmware updates, restart the device, and retry. Disney lists compatibility and outdated software among possible streaming causes in its streaming troubleshooting guidance.
  4. Test the network. Try another app or website, restart the router and modem, and, where practical, compare Wi-Fi with a different network such as a phone hotspot. If using a VPN, proxy, or filtering service, turn it off temporarily for the test. A speed test alone does not rule out packet loss, DNS trouble, filtering, or routing problems. Disney recommends Wi-Fi over mobile data where possible and identifies unstable connections and router/modem trouble as possible causes.

Fix a black screen in a computer browser

Check browser compatibility and updates

Disney’s browser requirements, updated in April 2026, list current Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera versions on Windows 10 or newer; current Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari versions on macOS 11 or newer; and the latest Chrome version on ChromeOS. Disney recommends the latest available browser version. See the current computer and browser requirements before troubleshooting an unsupported setup. Update the browser and operating system, then try another browser on Disney’s supported list. Computer playback also requires JavaScript and cookies to be enabled.

Test extensions and security filtering

Disney identifies content filters, antivirus applications, proxy accelerators, pop-up blockers, and ad blockers as possible causes of a blank screen. Open Disney+ in a private or incognito window with extensions disabled. If playback works there, re-enable extensions one at a time to find the conflict. You can also pause a security product’s web-filtering feature briefly for diagnosis, but restore protection afterward or use an appropriate site exception; do not leave antivirus protection disabled.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Clear site data and compare rendering settings

  • Clear Disney+ browser cache and cookies, then close and reopen the browser. Clearing cookies may sign you out.
  • If only one browser fails, test another supported browser before changing more settings.
  • If the black screen occurs only in one browser or in full-screen mode, test that browser’s hardware-acceleration setting, restart the browser, and compare results. Restore the original setting if it does not help. This is a reversible diagnostic test, not a universal Disney+ fix.
  • If you are using an external screen, disconnect it and test playback on the computer’s built-in display.

Disney provides cache-clearing instructions for browsers and supported devices; exact controls depend on the browser and operating system.

Fix the Disney+ app on a phone or tablet

Android phones and tablets

  • Force-close Disney+, reopen it, and restart the device.
  • Update Disney+ and Android, then check playback over Wi-Fi.
  • Clear the app cache if your device exposes that option. Android menu labels vary by manufacturer and version.
  • If the problem persists, reinstall Disney+ from the official app store. Test a streamed title separately from a downloaded one, since local downloads and live streaming can fail for different reasons.

iPhone and iPad

  • Force-close Disney+, restart the device, and install available Disney+ and iOS/iPadOS updates.
  • Test on Wi-Fi and, if you are using an adapter or external display, try playback without it.
  • If local app data appears to be the issue, delete or offload and reinstall the app using the options available in your iOS/iPadOS version. There is not a universal in-app cache-clearing menu.

Fix a black screen on a smart TV or streaming device

Start with the platform-specific controls you have: exit or force-stop Disney+, restart the device, update its system software and the Disney+ app, and clear the app cache if the device supports it. Disney’s device cache guide has separate instructions for many TVs, streaming devices, and consoles; menus differ by model and software version.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

Smart TVs

  • Exit and reopen Disney+, then restart the TV. If needed, turn it off, unplug it briefly, reconnect it, and retry.
  • Update the TV firmware and Disney+ app. Clear the app cache or reinstall Disney+ if those options are available for your model.
  • Try another app that plays video. If other apps also show a black picture, investigate the TV, its video settings, or its display connection rather than assuming Disney+ is the only cause.

Supported devices and availability can vary by territory. Check Disney’s supported-device information and its supported-devices category for your region and model.

Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and similar devices

  • Exit or force-stop Disney+, restart the streaming device, and install available app and system updates.
  • Clear cached data if the platform offers that control; otherwise reinstall the app after simpler steps fail.
  • If the device is connected through a receiver, switch, splitter, dock, or capture device, connect it directly to the TV for a test.
  • If the device is hot or nearly out of storage, let it cool or free space before testing again.

PlayStation and Xbox

  • Quit Disney+ instead of leaving it suspended, then restart the console.
  • Update the console and app, and compare with another game or streaming app.
  • If Disney+ still fails, reinstall it and test the console directly on the TV, bypassing an AV receiver or capture hardware.

For any platform, consult Disney’s troubleshooting options for device-specific steps. Device availability varies by territory.

When audio works but the picture is black

Sound without video often points toward rendering or the protected-video display path, not simply a slow internet connection. Check whether the picture returns on the device’s built-in display or in another supported browser. For a browser-only failure, test hardware acceleration as described above. For an external-screen failure, isolate the HDMI chain.

Isolate HDMI and HDCP problems

  1. Disconnect the external monitor, TV, projector, or capture setup and test playback on the source device’s own screen.
  2. On a TV, select the correct HDMI input. Reconnect the cable firmly, then test another cable and port.
  3. Temporarily bypass an AV receiver, HDMI switch, splitter, dock, adapter, or capture device. Connect the source directly to the display.
  4. Restart both the source device and display. As a diagnostic test, lower the output resolution or turn off HDR temporarily.
  5. If direct connection works but the intermediate device does not, that component or its compatibility is the likely bottleneck.

Disney says external displays should support HDCP 2.2 for 4K Ultra HD and HDR playback. HDCP is a content-protection handshake between the playback device and display chain, not an internet setting. That requirement should not be generalized to every Disney+ stream.

When the problem may be broader than one device

Compare results before concluding that Disney+ is down. Check another title, another Disney+ device, and another network where possible. If other streaming apps also fail, investigate the network, device, or display. If Disney+ fails across several devices but other services work, the issue may involve the account or Disney’s service; this pattern alone does not prove an outage. Check Disney’s Help Center for current guidance rather than assuming a service incident.

Reinstall and contact Disney support

Reinstall only after restarting, updating, and clearing cache have not helped. Uninstall Disney+, restart the device, reinstall it from the official app store, sign in again, and test playback. Reinstallation may remove downloads and require you to authenticate again.
