You can seek support after leaving an abusive or controlling relationship without having to report to police, explain everything at once, or follow a single required plan. In the United States, a trained advocate can help you think through safety and connect with local services. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If it is safe to contact them, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available at 800-799-SAFE (7233), by live chat, or by texting START to 88788.

Start with what you need right now

Leaving does not automatically make every concern disappear. You may need a safe place, help protecting children, health care, legal advice, counseling, money-related referrals, or simply someone trained to listen. You do not have to sort out every need before reaching out.

Domestic violence is not limited to physical assaults or visible injuries. The U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women describes it as including physical, sexual, emotional, economic, psychological, and technological behavior used to gain or maintain power and control. That broader definition can help explain why support may be useful even when there are no visible injuries.

There is no universal timeline for leaving or recovering. The U.S. Office on Women’s Health says you do not need to leave immediately or do everything at once, and United Nations safety-planning guidance encourages people to trust their own understanding of their situation. You can decide what feels possible and safe for you.

Support can also be useful if you are still deciding what to do, or if you have left but are not ready to make a long-term plan. You do not need to prove that your experience fits someone else’s definition of abuse before asking what help is available. You can describe only what feels comfortable and start with the most urgent concern.

Contact an advocate in the United States

The National Domestic Violence Hotline connects people with trained advocates who can offer support, crisis intervention, education, and referrals to community resources. Its current contact options are phone, live chat, and text. Check the Hotline’s page for the latest channels and availability.

If speaking or texting from your usual device could expose you to monitoring, consider whether another method or device would be safer. An advocate can discuss technology concerns with you, but no communication method is guaranteed private in every situation.

The Hotline makes referrals; it does not directly provide cash, hotel vouchers, or transportation vouchers. It may be able to connect you with community organizations that can help with those needs. Its local provider directory includes categories such as shelters, legal help, financial aid, counseling, state coalitions, and low- or no-cost health care.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you reach an advocate, you can begin with a practical question instead of recounting everything that happened. For example, you might say that you need to discuss a safe place to stay, an unsafe phone, legal advice, or help finding local counseling. You can ask what services are offered, whether there are eligibility limits, and what the next step would be. If the first organization cannot provide a particular service, ask whether it can refer you to another local provider.

It can help to think about what you need from the first contact: someone to listen, help assessing an immediate safety concern, information about an available shelter, or a connection to a specific service. You can share more later if and when you choose. Advocates can help you consider options, but decisions about what is workable belong to you.

Specialized services

The Hotline lists additional services for particular communities. Confirm their current contact details and channels on the Hotline’s page, since service information can change.

  • StrongHearts Native Helpline: 844-762-8483 for Native Americans and Alaska Natives.
  • National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline: 866-331-9474.
  • The Deaf Hotline video phone: 855-812-1001.

Accessibility, cultural fit, and communication preferences can matter when choosing where to start. The Hotline’s directory and advocates can help identify local options, but services and eligibility differ by area. If one contact method or provider does not fit your needs, asking about another channel or organization is reasonable.

Make a safety plan that fits your circumstances

A safety plan is a personalized way to think through risks and possible next steps. It is not a test or a checklist you must complete to deserve help. An advocate can help you consider what is relevant now and what can wait.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline puts responsibility for abusive behavior where it belongs: “While responsibility for ending abusive behavior is your partner’s and theirs alone, there are several steps you can take to protect yourself on your path to long-term safety.”

Depending on your situation, a plan might consider:

  • A trusted person, a safe place to go, or a code word that signals you need help.
  • Alternate ways to contact support and important phone numbers you may need.
  • Children’s needs, including medication, transportation, school or childcare arrangements, and who is allowed to pick them up.
  • Keys, medication, transport, and other practical needs if you need to leave quickly.
  • Legal questions to discuss with an advocate or local legal-aid provider.
  • Ways to review technology and social-media safety after separation.

Safety planning can remain relevant after a relationship ends. United Nations guidance notes that separation can prompt an abusive partner to escalate tactics. It recommends reviewing the plan, considering technology and social-media safety, and telling childcare providers who may pick up children. The guidance attributes its practical suggestions to the New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

If you are in immediate danger, leave without stopping to collect belongings or documents. The Office on Women’s Health advises using a safe computer or phone for planning if a partner may be tracking your activity. A plan should reflect your judgment about what is safest; no single set of steps suits everyone.

A plan can be small and change over time. You might begin by deciding whom you trust enough to contact, where you could go, or how you would get help if a situation changed. Later, if it feels safe, you can revisit questions about children, transportation, keys, medication, or legal support. You do not need to complete every possible preparation before seeking help or leaving.

If children are involved, consider which childcare providers or school staff need accurate information about who may pick them up. The UN guidance specifically recommends telling childcare providers who is authorized to collect children. An advocate can help you think through how to communicate this safely in your circumstances.

Protect communications and location information

A shared phone or computer can expose plans in ways that are not obvious. The Hotline warns that device use may be monitored without your knowledge; private or incognito browsing does not completely erase history; email can be intercepted; and GPS trackers may be placed on a car or belongings. Social-media posts can also reveal identifying details.

Depending on your circumstances, the Hotline suggests considering a safe computer, a new email account created on a safe computer, or a pay-as-you-go phone for private calls. These are possibilities to weigh, not guarantees of safety. A sudden change in device use, passwords, or location-sharing behavior might be noticed, so consider discussing options with an advocate before making changes if that is safe.

For technology-safety guidance, contact the Hotline through a method you believe is safer, or ask an advocate to help you think through risks specific to your devices and accounts. Clearing browser history or switching to private browsing should not be treated as proof that activity is hidden.

There is no single digital-safety step that is right for everyone. A device or account change can have consequences if another person notices it, and monitoring may happen in ways you cannot easily see. Rather than assuming that changing a password, clearing a browser, or buying a new phone guarantees privacy, weigh the situation and seek an advocate’s help if you can do so safely. If you use social media, consider whether posts, photos, location tags, or other identifying details could reveal where you are or what you are planning.

Technology questions can be part of a safety plan even after separation. Think about phones and computers, email, location information, vehicles, and belongings as possible sources of exposure. You do not have to investigate every device or make every change immediately; the goal is to consider what matters to your circumstances and what action, if any, is safest.

Find housing and practical help

A domestic-violence shelter may provide more than a place to stay. The Office on Women’s Health says services may include basic items, food, child care, counseling, support groups, help enrolling children in school, job training, legal help, financial-aid referrals, and help finding longer-term housing.

Shelter stays are often short-term and limited, and transitional housing may be a next step. What is available, who is eligible, and how long someone can stay vary by location. A local advocate or shelter can explain current options in your area.

If you need money, a hotel, transportation, or another immediate practical resource, be clear about that when speaking with an advocate. The Hotline itself does not pay individual expenses or issue cash, hotel, or transportation vouchers; its role is to connect people with local providers that may offer relevant help.

When asking about a shelter, you can ask what services are available beyond a bed, whether children can stay with you, how long a stay may be, and what happens when short-term shelter ends. The answer will depend on the local program and current availability. A shelter or advocate may be able to discuss transitional housing or other longer-term options, but those resources are not the same everywhere.

If you are not sure where to go, you can ask an advocate or local domestic-violence agency about nearby shelters and other community services. A shelter may offer basic items and food, as well as child care, counseling, support groups, job training, and help with school enrollment or housing searches. Some may help connect you to legal or financial resources. Ask directly about what is actually offered and any limits, rather than assuming every shelter provides the same set of services.

Not having money should not be treated as a reason you cannot ask about help. The Hotline does not directly provide cash, hotel vouchers, or transportation vouchers, but it can refer people to community resources that may help. Local provider availability, eligibility, and the type of assistance vary. When you make contact, describe the practical barrier that is most pressing so the advocate can look for an appropriate local referral.

Get legal, health, financial, and child-related support

Support can involve several needs at once, and a local domestic-violence agency may help you navigate them. The Office on Women’s Health says local agencies may help find free or sliding-scale legal assistance. It also points people toward family or domestic-violence court information for restraining orders.

Legal procedures and available remedies depend on your jurisdiction. For advice about your situation, contact local legal aid or ask an advocate to connect you with a qualified local provider rather than relying on general information as legal advice.

For health needs, the Hotline’s directory includes low- or no-cost health-care providers. The Office on Women’s Health also describes shelter-based support that may include counseling, child care, help with school enrollment, and referrals for financial aid or longer-term housing. Ask a local provider which services it actually offers and whether there are eligibility or availability limits.

You can ask an advocate to help you sort through several needs without having to solve them all at once. For instance, you might first ask about a safe place, then request information about legal aid or health care. A local agency may help connect you to free or sliding-scale legal assistance, but it cannot be assumed that every area has the same providers or that a particular service will be immediately available.

If you are considering a restraining order or another court process, seek information specific to your location. Family and domestic-violence court processes and available remedies vary by jurisdiction. Local legal aid or an advocate can help you find the relevant information and identify a qualified local source for advice.

Children’s practical needs may overlap with housing, health, and safety questions. Shelter programs may offer child care and help enrolling children in school; an advocate can help you ask about these supports and who is eligible. If a child’s pickup arrangements need to change, include the relevant childcare providers in your planning where it is safe to do so.

For financial concerns, the Hotline directory includes financial-aid categories, and shelter programs may refer people to financial assistance. These are referrals and local services, not a guarantee of direct payment. Ask what the provider can offer, whether it is currently available, and what other organization may be able to help if it cannot meet the need.

Prepare documents only if doing so is safe

If you are planning ahead and collecting records does not increase risk, the Office on Women’s Health suggests securing copies of identity and immigration records, health-insurance cards, financial and housing records, vehicle paperwork, tax returns, and important phone numbers. It also suggests keeping paper and electronic copies on an external thumb drive.

These preparations are optional. A document copy or storage device is not a prerequisite for leaving, and you should not delay leaving immediate danger to gather belongings or records. Consider where any copies will be stored and whether someone else could access them.

Records that may be useful include identity and immigration documents, health-insurance cards, financial and housing records, vehicle paperwork, tax returns, and key phone numbers. You might keep copies on paper or electronically, including on an external thumb drive, if that can be done and stored safely. Think about whether anyone else could find or access the copies; a copy that creates a new risk may not be helpful.

Document preparation is only for a situation where planning ahead is safe. It is not a condition for getting support, entering a shelter, or leaving. If danger is immediate, prioritize getting to safety rather than gathering papers, possessions, or a storage device.

Choose a first contact by urgency, privacy, and fit

There is no universal ranking of support options. Your best first step depends on immediate safety, whether you can communicate privately, your location and eligibility, accessibility or language needs, and the kind of help you are seeking. You can start with the option that feels safest and ask for a referral if it cannot meet a particular need.

Option Useful when What to expect
911 You face immediate danger in the United States. U.S. government guidance says to call 911 for immediate danger.
National Domestic Violence Hotline You want to speak with an advocate, discuss safety, or ask for a community referral. Phone, text, and live chat are listed; advocates provide support and referrals, not direct cash or vouchers.
Local domestic-violence agency or shelter You need to ask about shelter, counseling, children’s needs, legal support, or longer-term housing. Services and availability vary by place; a local provider can explain options and limits.
Local legal aid You need advice about legal options or court processes in your jurisdiction. Availability and legal remedies depend on where you live; an advocate may help locate free or sliding-scale assistance.
Local health-care provider You need health care, including a low- or no-cost option. The Hotline directory lists providers, but access and eligibility vary locally.

When comparing options, consider more than whether the service exists. Ask whether it can address the need that is most urgent, whether you can make contact privately, whether you are eligible, and whether it is accessible and culturally or linguistically appropriate for you. You can also ask what the next step is after the first conversation. A provider that cannot offer the exact service you need may still be able to refer you elsewhere.

When you make contact, you can begin with a simple statement of what you need, such as a safe place, help thinking about technology, or information about legal aid. You do not need to share more than you feel ready to share in order to ask what services are available. If the first route is not workable, you can consider another one; there is no single support option that is best for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can I talk to about leaving an abusive relationship?

In the United States, you can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233), use its live chat, or text START to 88788. Trained advocates offer support, crisis intervention, education, and referrals. You do not need to report to police or explain everything at once to ask for help. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

How can I plan to leave and keep myself safe?

An advocate can help you make a plan tailored to your circumstances. It may include a trusted person, a safe place, a code word, ways to contact help, children’s needs, medication, transportation, keys, legal questions, or technology and social-media safety. It is not a checklist you must complete. If danger is immediate, leave without stopping to gather belongings or documents.

How can I leave if I don’t have any money?

Ask an advocate or local domestic-violence agency about shelter and local financial or transportation resources. The National Domestic Violence Hotline does not directly provide cash, hotel vouchers, or transportation vouchers, but it may connect you with community organizations that can help. Availability and eligibility vary by location.

Where can I go if I decide to leave?

A local domestic-violence shelter or agency can explain nearby options. Shelter programs may offer food, basic items, child care, counseling, legal help, financial-aid referrals, and help finding longer-term housing, but services and availability vary. If you face immediate danger in the United States, call 911.

What happens after I arrive at a domestic-violence shelter?

Services differ by shelter. The Office on Women’s Health says shelters may offer basic items, food, child care, counseling, support groups, help enrolling children in school, job training, legal help, financial-aid referrals, and help finding longer-term housing. Stays are often short-term and limited; ask the local program about its services, eligibility, and possible next steps such as transitional housing.

Is it safe to use private browsing or delete my browser history to contact support?

Private or incognito browsing does not completely erase history, and device use may be monitored without your knowledge. Email can be intercepted, GPS trackers may be placed on a car or belongings, and social-media posts can reveal identifying details. Consider discussing your specific situation with an advocate using a method you believe is safer; no single device or browser step guarantees privacy.

The Bottom Line

You do not have to manage the aftermath alone or follow one required timeline. Start with the need that feels most urgent, and contact a trained advocate or local provider if it is safe. Support can include safety planning, shelter, legal and health referrals, child-related help, counseling, and longer-term housing connections. Services vary by location, and your immediate safety matters more than gathering documents or belongings.
