Start with a favorite movie, then search in two directions: look up films linked to that title, and identify the qualities you want to find again—such as its mood, subject, setting or style. Combine those methods with personalized recommendations, useful feedback and a check of where a film is streaming in your region.
1. Start with one favorite film
Choose a specific movie you already enjoy and look it up in a film database. Title-to-title recommendations are a quick way to find candidates without needing to describe your taste from scratch.
- IMDb More Like This: Browse related titles from a movie’s page. IMDb notes that older titles may appear more often because more information is available about them. IMDb explains More Like This.
- Letterboxd Similar Films: Film pages may include lists of similar films that can surface related themes and niche groupings, sometimes called “nanogenres.” Letterboxd says the feature is not available for every film. Letterboxd describes its film data.
Think of these lists as starting points, not guarantees that every suggestion will match your taste. If the results feel too close to the original, move from the title to the specific element you want to revisit.
2. Search for what you liked about it
A movie can work for you because of its premise, genre, mood, themes, setting, era, filmmaking style, or a particular director or performer. Pick one or two of those qualities and use them as the basis for your next search. For example, instead of searching only for films like a favorite mystery, look for a contained mystery with a wistful tone or a particular setting.

You can also search by plot. JustWatch describes a plot-based recommender, along with browsing and filters for genre, release year and IMDb rating. See JustWatch’s streaming guide.
Changing the search from “more like this movie” to “more like this part of the movie” often broadens discovery. A match on mood or theme may be more useful than a surface resemblance in genre or premise.

3. Add personalized recommendations
Title-based lists start with one film; personalized systems can draw on activity associated with your account. They may be useful when you want suggestions that reflect more than a single favorite.
- IMDb Top Picks: IMDb says these suggestions use ratings, watchlist activity and relationships to users with similar tastes. The account’s activity affects what appears, and IMDb lets users see titles on which recommendations were based. IMDb Top Picks help.
- Netflix recommendations: Netflix says its recommendations use viewing and search behavior, as well as actions such as starting or completing a title and rating it. These recommendations are for titles on Netflix. Netflix explains how recommendations work.
These services describe how they use activity to make predictions; that does not establish that one service is objectively better at matching taste than another.

4. Give recommendation systems useful feedback
If you rate films and use available positive or negative feedback, services have more signals to interpret. IMDb describes ratings and watchlist additions as indicators of interest. Netflix says it incorporates feedback from visits and viewing actions and continually updates its predictions. Netflix’s recommendation guidance outlines the viewing and feedback signals it uses.
Make your activity reflect what you actually want more of. A watchlist can show interest in a title, while ratings and viewing actions provide other signals; do not assume that simply opening a movie page means you liked the film.

5. Check where a movie is available
A recommendation is not a promise that a movie is currently available on a service you use. JustWatch combines discovery features with provider selection and a streaming guide, but listings can vary by region and change over time. Check the listing for your own market before planning to watch. Use JustWatch’s guide to check provider options.
6. Refine the search when results miss
Adjust the search based on what went wrong rather than abandoning the idea of similar-film discovery.

- If the list is too narrow: Switch to a different favorite or search for a broader quality, such as mood, theme or setting, rather than the exact premise.
- If the list is too broad: Add a constraint such as release period, genre or provider. JustWatch documents browsing and filters for genre, release year and IMDb rating.
- If recommendations feel generic: Try a title-based list for a clear starting point, then search by the particular element you liked. Personalized suggestions can add another route based on account activity.
Which discovery tool should you use?
| Tool | Best suited to | What it uses or offers | Practical caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| IMDb More Like This | Finding films related to one title | Similar-title recommendations | IMDb says older titles may appear more often because more information is available. |
| IMDb Top Picks | Personalized film and TV suggestions | Ratings, watchlist activity and users with similar tastes | Suggestions depend on activity recorded in the account; IMDb says users can see titles behind recommendations. |
| Letterboxd Similar Films | Exploring themes and niche groupings around a film | Similar Films lists, themes and “nanogenres” | Lists are not available for every film; Letterboxd does not offer a section specifically labeled as a personalized recommendation feature. |
| Netflix recommendations | Finding suggestions within Netflix | Viewing, completion, rating and search signals | Suggestions concern titles on Netflix and are predictions based on member activity. |
| JustWatch | Discovering films by taste or plot and checking providers | Taste and plot discovery, provider selection, and genre, year and rating filters | Verify the current listing for your region; the feature page does not establish permanent availability. |
Choose based on the kind of input you have: one specific film, a preference you can describe, or a history of viewing and ratings. Also consider whether you want visible similarity lists, finer filters or a way to limit results to providers you use. The services’ documentation describes their features, not a controlled comparison of recommendation quality.
