How to Find Mike Tyson’s Most Important Fights and Highlights

Follow Mike Tyson’s career through seven defining fights, from his first heavyweight title against Trevor Berbick to the 2002 championship bout with Lennox Lewis, with practical tips for finding highlights and full fights.

Start with seven bouts that trace Mike Tyson’s career: Trevor Berbick for his first world title, Tony Tucker for unification, Michael Spinks for a peak-era knockout, James “Buster” Douglas for the shock defeat, both Evander Holyfield fights for rivalry and controversy, and Lennox Lewis for Tyson’s final championship fight. ESPN’s classic boxing catalog lists selected Tyson bouts, but listings and access vary; check the current catalog and your region before subscribing or counting on a specific fight.

Seven fights that tell the story

These bouts are useful both as highlights and as a viewing path through Tyson’s career. A short knockout clip can show a decisive moment, but the full fights—especially those that went beyond an early finish—supply context that a highlight alone cannot. Together, the seven fights cover four useful questions: when Tyson first became champion, how he unified titles, how his career was tested by major defeats and controversy, and what a later championship challenge looked like.

There is no single objective ranking that makes these the only important Tyson fights. This is a practical starter list built around historical significance, competitive stakes, how easy a fight is to use as a highlight, and what it contributes to the larger career story. It deliberately includes a decision, a title-winning knockout, a famous upset, two very different Holyfield bouts and a later title fight rather than limiting the list to quick finishes.

Fight Why it matters What to look for Story it adds
Trevor Berbick, 1986 Tyson won the WBC heavyweight title at 20 years and 145 days, becoming the youngest heavyweight champion, according to ESPN’s career timeline. Search for the Berbick title-winning finish. Treat it as the moment Tyson first won a world title. The arrival of a champion who was still a teenager when his professional rise began.
Tony Tucker, 1987 Tyson won a decision and added the IBF belt, unifying the heavyweight titles. ESPN Stats & Info described him as the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Leon Spinks in 1978. Look for the full bout or late-round excerpts. It went the distance, making it a useful counterpoint to the famous quick knockouts. How Tyson’s early run was about collecting titles as well as finishing opponents.
Michael Spinks, 1988 A defining peak-era title fight and a major career milestone in ESPN’s account. Search “Tyson vs Michael Spinks highlights” or “Tyson Spinks KO.” Pair a short clip with the context that this was a title defense. The concentrated, high-stakes knockout moment often associated with Tyson’s peak.
James “Buster” Douglas, 1990 Douglas ended Tyson’s undefeated run in what ESPN calls the biggest upset in boxing in its career-milestone article. That is ESPN’s characterization, not a quantified ranking. Search “Tyson vs Buster Douglas full fight” or “Douglas knocks out Tyson.” The eighth-round knockdown and tenth-round finish are useful details when the chosen footage or source confirms them. A necessary turning point: Tyson’s record and aura were not invulnerable.
Evander Holyfield I, 1996 Holyfield stopped Tyson in round 11 and took the WBA title. CompuBox, as reported by ESPN Stats & Info in 2016, credited Holyfield with 110 power punches landed—the most by a Tyson opponent. Search “Tyson Holyfield 1996 highlights,” and label results clearly as the first bout. A championship defeat that established the stakes and competitive context for the rematch.
Evander Holyfield II, 1997 The rematch ended in round three when Tyson was disqualified after biting Holyfield. Search “Tyson Holyfield bite fight highlights.” Identify it as the second bout and give the rivalry context rather than treating the incident as an isolated spectacle. The most controversial episode in the rivalry, and a very different kind of defining highlight.
Lennox Lewis, 2002 Lewis knocked Tyson out in round eight in Tyson’s final championship fight. Search “Tyson vs Lennox Lewis highlights” and identify it as the 2002 championship bout. A later title challenge that closes this career-focused sequence.

How to compare the fights

Historical significance and highlight value are not the same thing. Berbick is indispensable for the first-title milestone; Spinks is easy to understand as a compact, defining title-fight finish. Tucker matters because it shows unification and a decision rather than another early knockout. Douglas is central to the career story because the loss ended Tyson’s undefeated run, but a short ending clip does not explain the bout by itself. The Holyfield rematch has a notorious incident, while the first fight supplies the sporting context and championship stakes. Lewis belongs because it was Tyson’s final championship fight, not because it represents his early peak.

For competitive stakes, focus on what each contest changed. Berbick marks Tyson’s first heavyweight title. Tucker adds the IBF belt and unifies titles. Spinks is a title defense. Douglas ends the undefeated run. Holyfield I changes the WBA titleholder, and Holyfield II ends in disqualification. Lewis is the final championship challenge in this sequence. Those distinctions help you decide whether you want a career milestone, a compact highlight, a full contest or a rivalry chapter.

The most useful way to watch is to match format to question. If you want a quick sense of why a particular moment is famous, a clearly labeled highlight can be enough. If you want to understand a decision, an upset, a title change or the tension preceding a controversial ending, look for the full fight or a longer, contextual recap. Do not mistake “most famous clip” for “best explanation of the fight.”

How to choose between a highlight and the full fight

For a quick knockout sequence

Berbick and Spinks are strong starting points if the aim is to see a title-winning or defining finish. Search by both fighters’ names and add “highlights” or “KO.” Check the clip’s title and description so a short edit is not mistaken for the complete bout or misidentified as a title fight. Berbick is specifically the first title win; Spinks is a title defense. That small distinction matters when clips are reposted without much context.

A clip can be useful for orientation: it shows the finish people refer to and gives you a fast entry into the fight. But it may omit the rounds that came before, and a search result’s title is not proof that it contains the entire bout. If the clip is very short, treat it as a highlight rather than a substitute for a full-fight listing.

For the career turning points

Choose the full Douglas fight to see the upset as a bout rather than only its ending. ESPN characterizes it as the biggest upset in boxing in its career-milestone article; that description is ESPN’s framing, not a numerical ranking. The eighth-round knockdown and tenth-round finish are useful search details only when the footage or a reliable listing confirms them. This is a case where seeing the event in sequence offers more context than a finish-only edit.

The Holyfield fights also benefit from context: the 1996 first bout explains the sporting stakes of the 1997 rematch. Holyfield stopped Tyson in round 11 and took the WBA title in the first fight. In the rematch, Tyson was disqualified in round three after biting Holyfield. A standalone bite clip may be easy to locate, but it cannot explain the preceding rivalry or show that the incident came in the second fight. Search and label each bout separately.

For a less familiar version of Tyson

Tucker is the key contrast. Tyson won by decision and added the IBF belt, so the full fight or late rounds show a contest that did not resolve as one of the rapid knockouts most often used in compilations. It is especially useful if your picture of Tyson comes mostly from short knockout videos. The result also carries title significance: ESPN Stats & Info described Tyson as the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Leon Spinks in 1978.

Lewis is useful for a later-career championship challenge rather than a snapshot of Tyson’s early peak. Lewis knocked Tyson out in round eight in 2002, Tyson’s final championship fight. Adding the date and “championship” to a search makes clear which part of the career the footage represents.

Where to look for footage

ESPN’s classic boxing listings include Tyson–Douglas, Tyson–Spinks and Tyson–Larry Holmes. ESPN’s Spanish-language guide from 2025 also names selected Tyson fights available through ESPN+, including Berbick, Spinks and Douglas. These catalog references do not guarantee that every bout is currently playable, or available in every country. A catalog entry is a lead to check, not a promise that the listing will still be present when you visit.

ESPN support, updated April 15, 2026, says access to ESPN+ content requires an active ESPN Unlimited or ESPN Select subscription. Its instructions cover the ESPN app, supported connected-TV devices and ESPN.com. Confirm the current access terms and search for the exact fight listing before subscribing or relying on a catalog entry. Subscription names, availability and catalogs can change.

  1. Open ESPN’s current boxing catalog in your region and search the opponent’s name as well as “Mike Tyson.” Searching only “Tyson” may be less precise than pairing his name with the opponent or year.
  2. Check whether the result is a full fight, a highlights package or a short clip; catalog descriptions may distinguish these formats. A result for a fighter does not necessarily mean the specific bout you want is included.
  3. Review the current ESPN access requirements for your device and account. ESPN’s support guidance is available at ESPN Subscription FAQs. The support page describes app, connected-TV and web viewing steps.
  4. If the title is missing, do not assume a subscription tier will unlock it. Availability can depend on the current catalog and region. Verify the exact listing before paying or planning around it.

Because streaming information changes faster than fight results, treat the historical facts and the viewing instructions differently. The opponent, year and outcome are stable career-guide details. Whether a particular archive title is available today, in your country and on a particular subscription is not. ESPN’s classic boxing catalog lists selected Tyson bouts, but this does not establish current playback for every title in every market.

Search phrases that narrow the results

Opponent plus year or format is more precise than a broad search for Tyson highlights. Useful phrases include “Mike Tyson best fights,” “Mike Tyson greatest knockouts,” “Tyson vs Buster Douglas full fight,” “Tyson vs Holyfield highlights,” and “Mike Tyson vs Lennox Lewis full fight.” These are practical search formulations, not measured search-volume rankings. They reflect the kinds of opponent-plus-format terms a viewer can use to distinguish a full bout from a highlight.

For the Holyfield rivalry, include “1996” or “1997” so the first bout and the disqualification rematch are not conflated. For title context, include “WBC” with Berbick or “IBF” with Tucker. When a result comes from a general video search, verify the opponent, date and whether it is an excerpt before treating it as the complete fight. If you are searching for a specific moment, add “highlights” or “KO”; if you want the entire contest, add “full fight.”

Search wording is a navigation aid, not evidence that a particular video exists or is officially available. The examples above are editorial suggestions rather than published query-volume data. A useful result should identify the opponent and format clearly. For the two Holyfield bouts, the year is especially important because “Tyson vs Holyfield” alone can return either fight or material about the rivalry as a whole.

A viewing order for a career arc

  1. Watch Berbick to begin with Tyson’s first heavyweight title. ESPN’s career timeline gives his age at the win as 20 years and 145 days, the youngest heavyweight champion milestone.
  2. Follow with Tucker to see the title-unification phase and a fight that went to a decision. It provides a different pace and a different kind of significance from a short knockout clip.
  3. Watch Spinks for a short, defining peak-era title-fight highlight. Keep the title-defense context attached to the clip.
  4. Use Douglas as the turning point, preferably in full rather than only as a finish clip. This puts the defeat and the end of Tyson’s undefeated run in context.
  5. Watch Holyfield I before Holyfield II; the first bout supplies the immediate sporting context for the rematch, including Holyfield’s round-11 stoppage and WBA title win.
  6. Finish with Lewis as the later championship challenge and Tyson’s final championship fight in this sequence.

This order is not a claim that every fan must watch the fights in chronological order. It is a simple route through the milestones: title arrival, unification, peak-era defense, upset, rivalry and controversy, then a later championship challenge. If you have time for only a few clips, choose according to what you want to learn: Berbick for the first title, Tucker for the decision and unification, Douglas for the upset, and the two Holyfield fights together for the rivalry’s context and controversy.

What not to assume when searching

Do not assume that a famous moment is the same as a full fight, that the first search result is an official or complete source, or that a catalog entry guarantees present-day access. Confirm the fight’s year and opponent, distinguish a highlight from a full bout, and check the current regional catalog and subscription terms. These checks prevent the most common mix-ups: treating the Holyfield rematch as the first bout, mistaking a short edit for the entire Tucker or Douglas fight, or paying for a service before confirming the requested title is listed.

This is a viewing-oriented guide, so no boxing equipment, memorabilia or other physical product is required to find these fights. Streaming access is the relevant option to investigate, but the sources reviewed do not verify an affiliate program or guarantee availability for every fight. Check the provider’s own current listing rather than relying on a generic recommendation.
