The most reliable way to find these books is to combine a curated directory with precise filters for age, genre, format, language, setting and reading taste. Start with We Need Diverse Books’ “Where to Find Diverse Books” directory, then use the American Library Association’s inclusive lists, awards, publisher catalogs and your library catalog to build and verify a shortlist. Check the author’s own biography or a reputable profile so you are choosing a book by an author from an underrepresented background, not merely a book about that background or one with diverse characters.

What “underrepresented backgrounds” means for a book search

“Underrepresented backgrounds” is a broad description, not a single category. It can include racial, ethnic, Indigenous, religious, disability, gender, sexuality, migration and other lived experiences. A directory organized around one community cannot represent every identity, genre, age group or publishing format. Treat each list as a route into a particular part of the publishing landscape rather than as a complete census.

Keep three questions separate while searching:

  • Who wrote the book? You are looking for the author’s background, confirmed through the author’s own biography, publisher page, literary organization or another reputable source.
  • What is the book about? A novel can portray a community without being written by a member of that community.
  • Who appears in the book? A diverse cast or subject does not by itself establish the author’s identity.

That distinction prevents a common mistake: labeling a title as an “underrepresented-author” book solely because its characters, setting or subject matter fit a category.

Where to look first

Use more than one type of source. A directory can point you toward a community list; an award list can surface critically recognized titles; a library catalog can tell you whether a specific edition is available to borrow.

We Need Diverse Books (WNDB), “Where to Find Diverse Books” A hub of booklists, organizations, blogs, awards and reading resources, with pathways by community and topic. Begin a search when you need several possible directions, especially for children’s and young-adult reading. It is a directory, not one exhaustive catalog. Open the linked resource and check its age range, focus and update date.
American Library Association (ALA) inclusive booklists Lists covering areas such as American Indian literature, Black literature, Arab and Arab American books, Jewish books, LGBTQ+ reading, immigration, and trans and nonbinary readers. Narrow a broad search to a community or topic, then move from a general goal to specific titles. Age, genre and selection criteria differ by list. Confirm those details on the individual list.
Children’s Book Council (CBC) directory Links to publisher and organization resources, including community-specific lists and publisher catalogs. Find children’s and young-adult catalogs or additional organizations after you have a theme or community in mind. The directory states that it was updated as of June 2021. Verify current titles, formats and availability on each linked resource.
Awards and curated reading lists Selections assembled by award bodies, libraries, organizations, publishers or community groups. Find a manageable shortlist and identify books that received attention from a particular curating body. Check the award year, eligibility rules, age range and whether the list is still maintained.
Library catalogs and librarians Local holdings, interlibrary-loan pathways where offered, format information and reader-advisory help. Confirm whether you can borrow a title and ask for recommendations that match your interests. Catalog records reflect one library system. Availability and editions change.

WNDB’s directory also points readers toward diverse-owned bookstores, and its bookshelf includes purchase links. Those are useful buying routes after you have selected a title; they do not replace checking a library catalog when borrowing is preferable.

A step-by-step method that produces relevant results

  1. Write a one-sentence brief. Include the intended reader’s age or grade, preferred genre, format, language, setting or subject, and any community or identity focus. For example: “I want a contemporary young-adult mystery in print, preferably set in a city, by an author from an underrepresented background.”
  2. Open WNDB’s directory and choose a pathway. Follow the community, topic, age or award route that is closest to your brief. Read the description of the linked list before treating its titles as matches.
  3. Use an ALA list to tighten the focus. If your brief concerns a particular community or topic, compare the relevant ALA pathway with the WNDB results. This often replaces a very broad search with a smaller, more usable set.
  4. Add one independent route. Check an award list, a publisher or organization list in the CBC directory, or a librarian’s recommendation. A second curator helps reveal titles that one directory does not include.
  5. Filter every candidate. Record age range, genre, format, language, setting, publication details and the reason the title matches your reading interest. Do not assume that a list’s heading answers all of those questions.
  6. Verify the author. Consult the author’s own biography or a reputable publisher, literary organization or library profile. Phrase identity descriptions only as specifically as the source supports; do not infer identity from a name, photograph or the book’s characters.
  7. Check the edition and access route. Search your local library catalog for the exact title and format. If it is not available, ask a librarian about another edition or an interlibrary-loan option where that service exists. For a purchase, check a diverse-owned bookstore or another retailer linked from a trusted resource.
  8. Keep the shortlist annotated. Save the list name, curator, update date if shown, author verification source, format and access result. This makes it easy to revisit the search without treating an old directory as current.

Choose the right path for the reader

Children’s books and picture books

WNDB, ALA lists and the CBC directory are particularly useful starting points for children’s and young-adult books. Check the intended age or grade, reading level where supplied, format and whether the book is fiction, nonfiction or a picture book. A community-focused list may include several formats, so do not assume that a title recommended for older readers suits an early reader.

Young-adult fiction and nonfiction

Use the same directories, but add genre and content preferences to the brief: fantasy, romance, mystery, memoir, history or another interest. Awards can help produce a short list, while a library catalog confirms whether a hardcover, paperback, ebook or audiobook edition is available.

Adult fiction

The named directories are strongest for children’s and young-adult discovery, and their coverage of adult fiction varies. Start with a community- or topic-specific list when one exists, then ask a librarian for adult-genre recommendations. Confirm each title through the author’s biography and the publisher or library record rather than assuming that a children’s list extends to adult publishing.

Adult nonfiction

Define the subject before the identity filter: history, science, memoir, politics, cookery and other fields produce very different results. An organization or award list may be more useful than a general diversity directory. Check whether the author is writing from lived experience, reporting on a community, or both; those are different reasons a title may matter to you.

Readers seeking a particular community or topic

The ALA pathways can move you from a broad request to lists for American Indian literature, Black literature, Arab and Arab American books, Jewish books, LGBTQ+ reading, immigration, and trans and nonbinary readers. WNDB’s directory adds pathways by community and topic and links to other curated resources. Use the label as a starting point, then read the individual list’s description and selection criteria.

How to compare discovery sources before choosing titles

When two lists produce different results, compare them on practical dimensions rather than asking which is universally “best.”

Question Why it affects your choice What to record
What age range does it cover? A children’s list may not answer an adult reader’s question, and a young-adult list may mix formats or reading levels. Children, young adult, adult, or not stated.
What community or identity focus does it use? A broad list can introduce possibilities; a focused list may better match a specific request. Community, topic, multiple communities, or general.
Which genres and formats appear? A list dominated by picture books will not solve a request for adult science fiction or an audiobook. Genre, print, ebook, audiobook, graphic format or not stated.
Who curates it? A library association, award body, publisher and community organization may use different selection goals. Curating organization and stated purpose.
When was it updated? Older directories can still point to useful resources, but links, editions and availability change. Date shown on the page; for the CBC directory, June 2021 is the stated update date.
What happens after discovery? Some routes lead to a library list, some to a publisher catalog, and some to a purchase page. Borrowing path, catalog, publisher information, bookstore or purchase link.

Verify that a title really fits

Confirm the author, not only the representation

Read the author biography attached to the title or consult a reputable profile. If the source identifies an author’s community, use that description accurately and avoid expanding it into a broader claim. If no reliable identity information is available, describe only what the source establishes.

Check the title’s actual subject

Read the publisher or library synopsis and, when useful, reviews from trusted publications. A title may be written by an author from an underrepresented background while telling a story unrelated to that identity. That is not a defect; it simply answers a different reading request than a book specifically about the community.

Confirm edition details

Record the ISBN or other edition information shown by the catalog, especially when you need large print, an audiobook, an ebook, a particular language or a classroom set. A list may name a title without indicating which formats remain in circulation.

Use content information responsibly

Community and topic lists are discovery tools, not substitutes for reading a full synopsis or checking age suitability. For children and teens, confirm the intended age range and any content notes supplied by the library, publisher or list curator.

Borrowing, buying and keeping availability current

Start with a library catalog

Search by title and author, then check format, branch, hold status and edition. If the record is missing, ask a librarian to search the wider system or suggest a comparable title. Library staff can also recommend books that fit your genre and age preferences, which is especially helpful for adult reading where the named directories may be less comprehensive.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Use purchase links as a second step

After selecting a title, follow the purchase route attached to a trusted bookshelf or choose a diverse-owned bookstore. Availability, price and formats can change, so verify the current listing rather than relying on an old directory entry. The presence of a purchase link does not establish that every retailer carries every edition.

Keep both options in your notes

For each shortlisted book, save one borrowing route and one purchase route when available. This prevents a temporarily unavailable edition from ending the search and lets you support a bookstore while retaining a no-cost library option.

What the available figures do—and do not—tell you

WNDB cites Cooperative Children’s Book Center statistics showing that authors of color wrote 8 percent of children’s books published in America in 2014 and 47 percent in 2023. These are shares of children’s books by authors of color for the stated years, not measurements of every form of representation and not shares of all books in every market.

WNDB also reports that less than two percent of children’s books published in the United States depict Native characters. The resource page does not state a measurement year, so this figure should not be presented as a current-year estimate.

Separate WNDB impact figures concern its internship support: more than 140 interns have received financial support and career guidance, and 70 percent of former interns work full-time at a publisher or literary agency. Those numbers describe the program’s reported outcomes, not the proportion of underrepresented authors or books.

These figures explain why curated discovery remains useful, but they cannot produce a comprehensive count of books by underrepresented authors across every age, format, identity and genre. No single directory listed here establishes that complete database.

Common search mistakes and how to correct them

  • Relying on one directory. Correction: combine WNDB with an ALA pathway, an award or publisher list, and a library search.
  • Treating a directory as current forever. Correction: note its update date and open the linked resource itself. The CBC directory, for example, states a June 2021 update.
  • Confusing a book about a community with a book by an author from that community. Correction: verify the author separately and state the book’s subject separately.
  • Assuming identity from a name or story. Correction: use an author biography or reputable profile; do not guess.
  • Ignoring what the reader actually wants. Correction: filter by age, genre, format, language, setting and interest before choosing a title.
  • Overlooking adult coverage. Correction: ask a librarian or use adult-genre and subject lists when children’s and YA directories do not fit.
  • Checking only whether a title is listed. Correction: verify the edition, format, language, current availability and age suitability.
  • Assuming a recommendation guarantees quality or personal fit. Correction: read the synopsis and compare the book with your own interests; identity alone does not predict content or taste.

Build a repeatable reading list

A simple record turns a one-time search into a useful personal catalog. For each candidate, capture:

  • Title and author
  • Author-background source and the exact description it supports
  • Age range, genre, format and language
  • Community or topic connection, if relevant to your request
  • Curating source, award or list name
  • List update date, when shown
  • Library location or borrowing status
  • Purchase route and edition details
  • Your reason for keeping or rejecting the title

Review the record when you begin a new reading cycle. Remove dead links, update availability and add newer award or library recommendations, while preserving the original list date so you know which information may need rechecking.

A note on the wider publishing conversation

Jacqueline Woodson, identified by WNDB as a National Book Award winner and the 2018–19 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, said: “WNDB has literally changed the narrative of Young People’s Literature.” The statement appears on WNDB’s Impact page, accessed October 13, 2026. It captures the organization’s stated influence, but it is not a substitute for evaluating an individual book’s author, subject, age range and fit.

The practical conclusion is straightforward: begin with curated pathways, narrow them to the reader in front of you, verify the author and edition, and finish with a library or bookstore check. That process is more dependable than searching for a single universal list.
