For a close-up of one laureate, start with Jim Allison: Breakthrough, Cracking the Code: Phil Sharp and the Biotech Revolution, Herzberg or Salam. For a wider look at Nobel winners, try the five-episode series The Nobel Prize. The films have different legal viewing routes, and listings vary by country and over time, so check the title’s official page and your local service catalogue before settling on a watch option.

Choose a film by the kind of story you want

Documentaries about Nobel Prize–winning scientists do not all tell the same story. Some follow one person and the work behind a discovery; others place several laureates in a wider account of science or the prize. Decide whether you want a personal portrait, an explanation of a scientific breakthrough or a survey of winners before choosing where to watch.

Title Focus Runtime stated in the available listing Viewing route named by an official or platform page
Jim Allison: Breakthrough (2019) Jim Allison’s long effort to advance cancer immunotherapy; a single-scientist biography 90 minutes, according to the production page Amazon, Apple TV, Kanopy, Google Play, Tubi and Vudu are listed on the production page; check local availability
Cracking the Code: Phil Sharp and the Biotech Revolution Phil Sharp’s RNA-splicing discovery and its effect on molecular biology and biotechnology 1 hour 24 minutes on the PBS Independent Lens listing PBS streaming; the official page also lists Amazon, Apple TV, Hoopla and Kanopy
Herzberg Gerhard Herzberg, the 1971 Nobel laureate, working at his laboratory at Canada’s National Research Council Not stated on the NFB page The National Film Board of Canada page offers rental and purchase controls
Salam (2018) Pakistani physicist Abdus Salam; a single-laureate documentary 75 minutes on Apple TV’s United Kingdom listing Apple TV’s UK listing; it does not establish availability elsewhere
The Nobel Prize A five-episode series covering laureates in science and other fields Tubi lists episodes at 51 minutes; Apple TV lists them at 50 minutes Listed on Tubi and Apple TV; the Apple TV storefront referenced here is the United States listing
Chasing Einstein A broader science-discovery film following scientists, including Nobel laureates, around experiments such as LIGO, CERN and XENON 1T Not stated on the official site The official site says “Now streaming!” and links to a watch destination; confirm that link and local access

These are viewing leads, not a quality ranking. The available listings do not establish a universal catalogue or worldwide rights, and a named service may not carry a film in your country.

The quickest way to narrow the shortlist is to match the film’s scale and emphasis to your interest. Jim Allison: Breakthrough and Cracking the Code connect an individual researcher to a specific area of biomedical science. Herzberg gives a laboratory-centered portrait, while Salam focuses on a Pakistani physicist. The Nobel Prize trades a single-person focus for several laureates and categories. Chasing Einstein is broader still: it follows scientific work and experiments with Nobel laureates among the subjects, rather than promising a biography of one winner.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Runtime can help with planning, but only a few listings supply one. The 90-minute production-page figure for Jim Allison: Breakthrough, the 84-minute PBS Independent Lens listing for Cracking the Code, and the 75-minute UK Apple TV figure for Salam are useful comparisons, not necessarily runtimes for every edition or storefront. The two listings for The Nobel Prize differ by one minute per episode. If you are planning around a particular screening window, confirm the runtime shown by the service you will use. No runtime is stated on the NFB page for Herzberg or the official Chasing Einstein site.

Start with a single-scientist portrait

Jim Allison: Breakthrough

This 2019 documentary follows Jim Allison’s sustained effort to advance cancer immunotherapy. The production page identifies Allison as a 2018 Nobel Prize winner and gives the film a 90-minute runtime. PBS Independent Lens describes the film as premiering on April 27, 2020, and explains the Nobel recognition as being for discovering the immune system’s role in defeating cancer. The two descriptions help orient viewers to the film’s scientific and biographical subjects; neither should be treated as a promise of current availability.

The 2019 date identifies the film, while April 27, 2020 is the PBS Independent Lens premiere date; those dates refer to different things. The production page names Amazon, Apple TV, Kanopy, Google Play, Tubi and Vudu as viewing options. These are possible routes to check, not proof that the documentary is currently available on every service or in every region. A platform may show a title as a rental, purchase, library selection or another kind of stream, so inspect the listing rather than assuming the access model from the service name alone.

The film’s official companion page also presents This Is What a Hero Looks Like, a photography book about cancer scientists, as an optional extension of the subject. Its book page says it includes more than 85 scientists from 35 countries. The book expands the film’s portrait of Allison with stories and photographs of scientists; it is a related reading option, rather than another film or a streaming route. Check the current Amazon listing for your region, format and terms if you want the book. Its presence on a companion page does not establish that every edition is in stock or that a particular purchase arrangement is available.

Cracking the Code: Phil Sharp and the Biotech Revolution

This film centers on Phil Sharp’s RNA-splicing discovery and its impact on molecular biology and biotechnology. PBS Independent Lens lists a premiere date of October 6, 2025, and a runtime of 1 hour 24 minutes. The official page labels the film as streaming on PBS and also names Amazon, Apple TV, Hoopla and Kanopy. Check the film’s page and the relevant local catalogue for the current route; the listings do not establish that every option is available in every market.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

It is the most explicitly discovery-centered choice in this shortlist: the description ties Sharp’s RNA-splicing work to changes in both molecular biology and biotechnology. That makes it a natural pick if you want a story about the scientific finding and its consequences rather than a general overview of Nobel history. The listed routes also give you several kinds of access to investigate, including broadcaster streaming and library platforms. A PBS label does not by itself answer whether the film is available without a subscription, for how long, or in every country; rely on the current PBS title page for those terms.

Herzberg

The National Film Board of Canada’s Herzberg offers a more observational setting: it follows 1971 Nobel laureate Gerhard Herzberg working in his laboratory at Canada’s National Research Council. The NFB page provides rental and purchase controls. It does not state a runtime in the information available here, so check the film page for details before choosing a session or comparing it with a timed title.

Its setting distinguishes it from films described primarily through a discovery’s wider impact: the stated premise places the viewer with Herzberg at work in his laboratory. If that kind of close observational portrait is what you want, the NFB page is the direct place to check both the film details and the rental or purchase option. The existence of controls is not a quoted price or a guarantee that a particular option is available to every visitor. Confirm the current terms, currency and regional access on the page before paying.

Salam

Apple TV’s United Kingdom listing describes this 2018, 75-minute documentary about Pakistani physicist Abdus Salam. Treat that as evidence for a UK storefront listing only. A listing in one country does not establish that the film is available through Apple TV in another country, or that its access terms are the same.

The UK listing provides a useful lead if you are looking for a focused film about Salam, but do not use it as a worldwide availability claim. Open the Apple TV storefront for your own country and search the exact title; if it does not appear, the listing alone cannot establish an alternative service. The cited listing also supplies the runtime, so it can help with scheduling in the UK storefront context, but verify the runtime and terms shown where you watch.

Pick a broader film or series when you want several laureates

The Nobel Prize

This five-episode series ranges beyond science: its episodes also cover Peace, Literature and other laureates. The science coverage includes figures such as Alexander Fleming, Robert Koch, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Saul Perlmutter and Andre Geim. It is therefore a useful option for viewers who want a cross-prize survey, but it is not an exclusively science-focused series.

Episode lengths differ slightly between listings: Tubi gives 51 minutes, while Apple TV gives 50 minutes. The series is listed on both services, but the Apple TV listing referenced here is from the United States storefront. Check the episode page in your own market if runtime or availability matters to your plans. Because it spans five episodes and multiple prize areas, this is the best fit in the list for sampling laureates across subjects rather than following one scientist from discovery to recognition. Check episode descriptions before watching if you want to select only the science-focused material.

Chasing Einstein

Chasing Einstein follows leading scientists, including Nobel laureates, amid experiments such as LIGO, CERN and XENON 1T. It is a science-discovery film with laureates among its subjects, not necessarily a biography of one winner. Its official site says “Now streaming!” and links to a watch destination. Follow that official route and verify that the destination is live and accessible in your region before relying on it.

The official page carries a review attributed to CPH:DOX calling it “a fascinating film documenting the hunt to answer one of the greatest open questions about our universe.” The quotation supports the film’s framing as an investigation into a major scientific question; it is not a runtime or a viewing guarantee. If you are interested in experiments and scientific collaboration as well as individual laureates, this broader format may be a better match than a conventional single-person biography. The official site does not state a runtime in the cited information, so follow the destination page for session details.

The Winners’ Guide to the Nobel Prize

For a view of the prize experience rather than a scientist’s discovery alone, the Australian National Film and Sound Archive’s teacher notes quote director Mark Gould describing the aim as a “behind the scenes” observational film taking audiences through the subjective experience of winning a Nobel Prize. The notes say the production filmed for 38 days, including 10 days in Sweden, and recorded 100 hours of footage. The cited notes do not state a year or establish a current streaming option, so use them to understand the film’s approach rather than as evidence of where to watch it.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

This title belongs in a different viewing lane from the individual-scientist profiles: its stated angle is the experience of winning the prize. The production figures—38 filming days, 10 of them in Sweden, and 100 hours of footage—offer a sense of the scope behind the observational approach, but they should not be confused with the finished film’s runtime. The archive’s teacher notes are a useful source for understanding its intent; look for an official film or archive listing separately if you need a current viewing route.

How to find a legal, usable watch option

  1. Search for a specific person and discovery. Combine the laureate’s name with “documentary” and a field or discovery, such as “Jim Allison documentary cancer immunotherapy.” A focused search is more likely to distinguish a biographical film from a general science programme or a short clip. You can also search for a title you already know, such as “Herzberg NFB” or “Phil Sharp RNA splicing documentary,” to narrow results to the relevant filmmaker or archive.
  2. Verify that the result is the film you mean. Confirm the title and subject against a filmmaker, distributor, broadcaster, public film archive or streaming-service page. Search results alone may not distinguish a documentary from an interview, news segment or unrelated work. Check the spelling and subtitle too: a subject-name search may return several works, while the full title helps identify the specific film.
  3. Read the official title page for viewing routes. Look for broadcaster streaming, a service listing, a library platform, rental or purchase controls, or a link to a watch destination. A page naming a service records an option associated with that page; it does not guarantee a current listing in your country. Note whether a page merely names a platform or sends you directly to a listing—those are not the same as confirming the film is currently playable.
  4. Check library catalogues where relevant. Search Kanopy or Hoopla catalogues if you have access to them through a library. A title’s appearance among listed options does not prove that a particular library provides it, so verify in the catalogue you can use. If you cannot find the title, check your library’s instructions for platform access or ask the library whether it licenses that film; the platform being named on a production page is not proof of local library coverage.
  5. Confirm the local listing before you plan to watch. Open the title in the service’s storefront for your country and check that the documentary itself—not just a trailer or related item—is listed. Availability and access terms can change over time. Be especially careful with region-specific examples: the cited Salam listing is from the UK Apple TV storefront, while the cited Apple TV listing for The Nobel Prize is from the US storefront.
  6. Compare the film’s emphasis and length. Choose a single-person biography for a concentrated portrait, a discovery-focused film for the scientific work, or a multi-winner programme for breadth. Use a runtime only when the relevant production or platform listing states one; the figures above are tied to their named listings. If you need a particular subject, confirm that the film actually centers on that person rather than including them among a larger group.
  7. Check the terms at the final step. A route may be free, ad-supported, library-based, rental or purchase, but the cited pages do not establish current prices or a universal access model. Read the final service or archive page for any charge, account or library requirement before starting. Do not infer that a title is free simply because it appears on a streaming service, or that a purchase option is permanent access.

Understand what each access route means

The title pages name a mix of broadcaster streaming, commercial streaming, library services, and rental or purchase controls. They do not establish a price for these films, whether a title is free, or whether any particular option is still active. Confirm the access terms on the service or archive page before you start. Where the page offers more than one route, choose the one that actually appears in your region rather than assuming every listed service carries the film.

In practical terms, treat a list of services as a set of places to check—not as a promise of identical access. One title may be found through a broadcaster, another through a library, and another through a film archive that offers paid rental or purchase. A platform may also change its catalogue or the way it presents a film. The sources associated with these titles do not provide comparable prices, so there is no reliable price ranking here.

  • Broadcaster or streaming-service listing: Check the title’s own page within the service. A general service catalogue may not match another country’s catalogue.
  • Library viewing: Search your library’s Kanopy or Hoopla catalogue, where available. The service being named on a film page does not establish access through your library.
  • Rental or purchase: For Herzberg, the NFB page offers rental and purchase controls. Check the page for the current terms; no price is stated here.
  • Official-site watch link: For Chasing Einstein, use the official site’s watch destination and confirm it remains live and accessible locally.
  • Companion book: This Is What a Hero Looks Like is a physical reading companion to Jim Allison: Breakthrough, not a way to stream the film. Verify its current listing, region and format separately.

Choose your next watch

  • For one scientist’s path through cancer immunotherapy, begin with Jim Allison: Breakthrough.
  • For a film centered on RNA splicing and biotechnology, look up Cracking the Code: Phil Sharp and the Biotech Revolution.
  • For a laboratory-centered portrait of a Canadian Nobel laureate, check the NFB listing for Herzberg.
  • For a documentary about Abdus Salam, use the Apple TV UK listing as a lead and verify your own market’s catalogue.
  • For multiple science laureates alongside other Nobel categories, browse The Nobel Prize.
  • For contemporary scientific experiments with laureates among the subjects, follow the official Chasing Einstein watch link.
  • For the experience of receiving the prize, look up The Winners’ Guide to the Nobel Prize and use the archive’s teacher notes to understand its observational approach.
