Start with the organizers’ current event pages: the Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF) schedule, NorthwestFest’s Attend pages, and Metro Cinema’s calendar. Check the exact screening date, venue, ticket or pass rules, and entry instructions before you buy or travel. As of October 13, 2026, the 2026 EIFF, NorthwestFilmFest, and Rainbow Visions dates listed by their organizers have passed; NorthwestFest’s reviewed pages do not establish the next NorthwestFEARFest dates.
Where to find Edmonton festival listings
Use festival and venue calendars rather than relying on an old event listing or a general search result. Festival pages are the most useful places to confirm what is screening, whether tickets remain available, and how admission works. Metro Cinema’s calendar is another place to look for festival screenings, especially those at the Garneau.
- Edmonton International Film Festival: Its official schedule and ticket links are the starting point for EIFF screenings and event details.
- NorthwestFest: Its Attend pages connect visitors to film menus, tickets and passes, venue guidance, and a newsletter for updates. The organizer also presents several distinct festival events, so confirm which event a listing belongs to.
- Metro Cinema: Check its film calendar for screenings and events at the Garneau Theatre.
If you are starting with a search engine, phrases such as “film festivals in Edmonton,” “Edmonton film festival schedule,” “Edmonton International Film Festival tickets,” and “NorthwestFest tickets and passes” can help you locate the official listings. Use the search to find the organizer, then confirm details on the organizer’s page. Search results and older event pages can continue to appear after an edition has ended.
NorthwestFest’s newsletter is another option if you want updates from that organizer. It is useful for following its events, but it does not replace checking the listing for the particular festival, screening, or ticket you plan to attend. Metro Cinema’s calendar can also help you find festival screenings at the venue, while the festival’s own page is where to verify its pass rules and other event-specific instructions.

The official 2026 dates are useful context, not a forecast of the next editions. EIFF ran September 24–October 3, NorthwestFilmFest ran April 8–14, and Rainbow Visions ran June 19–21. All had passed by October 13, 2026. Check the relevant organizer’s current pages for future dates and ticket availability before making plans.
NorthwestFest names NorthwestFEARFest among its festivals, but the official pages reviewed do not establish its next dates. Do not plan around an assumed annual date or reuse an old event listing as confirmation; wait for a current event page from the organizer. The dates and listings above are starting points rather than a complete inventory of every film event in Edmonton.
Choose a festival by the films and events you want
Edmonton’s festivals do not all serve the same viewing interest. Compare the program before choosing a date or buying a pass.
| Festival or listing | Program focus described by the organizer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF) | A curated selection of international cinema, with filmmaker chats, Q&As, gala screenings, and local filmmaker programming. | Current schedule, event details, ticket availability, and the venue listed for each screening. |
| NorthwestFilmFest | Metro Cinema describes it as nonfiction and narrative films from Canada and abroad, with an emphasis on documentary features, truth-based independent films, and Alberta films. | Current film menu, screening dates, ticket or pass options, and Metro Cinema arrival details. |
| Rainbow Visions | NorthwestFest lists the festival, but the reviewed information does not provide a program description to characterize here. | Use the organizer’s current event page to confirm its dates, program, and ticket details. |
| NorthwestFEARFest | NorthwestFest names it among its festivals; the reviewed pages do not establish its next dates. | Look for a current event listing before planning around it. |
Think about the kind of experience you want as well as the film category. EIFF’s published description includes filmmaker chats, Q&As, gala screenings, and local filmmaker programming in addition to its curated international cinema. NorthwestFilmFest’s described focus includes documentary features and truth-based independent films, alongside nonfiction and narrative work from Canada and abroad. These are helpful distinctions when choosing which program to explore, not promises about the contents of every edition.
A festival’s theme or reputation cannot tell you whether a specific screening suits your plans. Open the individual film entry and check its date, venue, and any accompanying event information. For EIFF, the schedule includes filmmaker events as well as screenings; if a chat or Q&A matters to you, make sure it is attached to the screening you intend to attend.
NorthwestFest’s homepage reproduces a line attributed to Edmonton Journal writer Fish Griwkowsky calling NorthwestFest “the absolute best festival of the year” for documentary fans. That is an attributed opinion, not an independently established ranking or a substitute for reviewing the program. The practical comparison is the actual list of films, dates, ticket options, and venue arrangements for the edition you are considering.

How to plan a festival visit
- Choose the event. Compare the published program with what you want to see: international cinema and filmmaker events at EIFF, or the nonfiction and independent-film emphasis described for NorthwestFilmFest. If you are considering another NorthwestFest event, use its own current listing rather than assuming all the festivals have the same focus.
- Find the screening in the current schedule. Confirm the film, day, start time, and venue on the organizer’s page. Do not treat past-edition dates as upcoming dates. If the organizer lists more than one venue, make the venue part of your screening check, not an afterthought.
- Check whether admission is still available. Look at the screening’s ticket page before arranging travel. A festival listing does not guarantee that seats remain for a particular show. Availability can differ from one screening to another, and a pass does not make a sold-out screening available.
- Select the right admission type. Decide whether a single-show ticket fits your plans or whether an available pass does. Read the event’s terms before purchasing; pass access is restricted to the festival named on that pass. If you are planning several screenings, compare the pass conditions with the actual booking process rather than assuming that the pass itself reserves a place at each showing.
- Follow any advance-booking instructions. NorthwestFest describes physical passes and individualized booking codes for reserving tickets in advance. Follow the current instructions for the specific pass you bought rather than assuming that possessing a pass automatically reserves a seat.
- Verify the venue and entrance. Edmonton festivals use different venues, and entry instructions can be event-specific. Recheck the event page shortly before leaving. For a screening at Metro, read the current queueing and entry instructions rather than relying on directions posted for an earlier edition.
- Plan the trip and access needs. Review transit, parking, and venue-access information for the particular theatre. If you need step-free entry or an accessible washroom, contact the organizer or venue before purchasing or traveling. Ask about the route and facilities relevant to your visit, not only whether there is an alternate entrance.
- Prepare your ticket for entry. NorthwestFest accepts digital tickets on a phone or other device and describes a Showpass QR-code option. Printed tickets are also allowed. If collecting a physical pass, bring the printed or digital receipt specified in its instructions.
Allow time for practical details on the day of the screening. Check the current address and entrance, have the right ticket or booking information ready, and review transport options before setting out. If your plans depend on a particular access arrangement, confirm it directly rather than assuming that an old venue note still applies.
Tickets and passes: what to verify before paying
NorthwestFest describes two broad admission options: single-show tickets and all-access passes. A single-show ticket is the straightforward choice when you have one screening in mind. A pass may suit a plan to attend more than one event, but its conditions matter more: the organizer says a pass is valid only for the festival named on it, and sold-out screenings are unavailable to passholders too.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For a NorthwestFest pass, read the current booking instructions from purchase through entry. The organizer describes physical passes and individualized booking codes that can be used to book tickets in advance. Keep the pass and the booking confirmation or code available as instructed. Do not assume that an all-access pass removes the need to reserve a ticket for an individual screening.
In practice, there are two separate questions: whether your pass applies to the festival you chose, and whether the screening still has availability. Check both before relying on a pass for a particular show. The pass page asks how to use an All-Access Pass after purchase, a useful reminder that the steps after checkout matter as much as the purchase itself. Follow the current instructions for advance booking, and keep any individualized code or confirmation available when you arrive.
EIFF links its schedule to ticketing, but its current ticket terms should be checked for the edition and screening you select. Rules for one festival should not be carried over to another: ticket availability, pass eligibility, advance booking, and event-specific admission instructions can differ.
Before you complete a purchase
- Confirm the ticket is for the correct film, date, and venue.
- Read whether a pass requires a separate advance booking or ticket for each screening.
- Check whether the screening is still on sale; a pass does not make a sold-out screening available.
- Save the ticket, booking code, or receipt in the format the organizer requests.
- Review the organizer’s current instructions for changes or event-specific entry details.
Buying through the official event or ticket link also helps keep your plan tied to the correct edition. No single admission rule should be assumed across EIFF, NorthwestFilmFest, Rainbow Visions, or NorthwestFEARFest. The applicable ticket page is the place to settle questions about what admission includes and what must be booked separately.

Venues, arrival, and accessibility
The 2026 EIFF schedule listed two venues: Landmark Cinemas 9 Edmonton City Centre, at 10200 102 Ave NW, and Metro Cinema at the Garneau, at 8712 109 St NW. NorthwestFilmFest’s 2026 edition was at Metro Cinema at the Garneau Theatre, 8712 109 Street NW. These are past-edition venue details, not a guarantee that a future screening will be held at the same location.
Use the address attached to your actual screening, even if you have attended a festival before. EIFF used more than one venue in 2026, and the Garneau also hosted the 2026 NorthwestFilmFest edition. A festival name by itself is not enough to identify where a screening takes place.
Landmark Cinemas 9 Edmonton City Centre
EIFF’s 2026 event page gave specific instructions for entering Landmark. Because those directions were for that edition, verify the current event page for the entrance and queueing instructions attached to a future screening rather than relying on the old directions. If you are comparing events at Landmark and Metro, check the instructions for the particular venue listed on your ticket; do not assume the same entry routine applies at both.
Metro Cinema at the Garneau
For EIFF’s 2026 events, the organizer instructed attendees to queue at Metro’s main doors on 109 Street. It also said that accessible entry without stairs was available upon request. Treat both details as event-specific and confirm them with the organizer before a future visit.
Recommended Free Tools
NorthwestFest’s venue information identifies significant mobility barriers at the Garneau: there are steps between the street, lobby and washroom area, and auditorium, and the washroom stalls cannot accommodate a wheelchair. The page advises contacting the theatre or festival ahead to discuss possible accommodations. If step-free entry or an accessible washroom is important, ask about the specific screening and the full route through the venue before buying a ticket. Do not assume that an accessible entrance resolves every access need.
For an access question, be specific about what you need to know: the route into the building, movement between the lobby and auditorium, or washroom facilities. The venue information distinguishes these parts of the visit, so a general answer about entry may not answer a question about the entire venue. Contact the organizer or theatre ahead of time to discuss possible accommodations for the screening you plan to attend.

Getting to the Garneau
NorthwestFest says the number 9 bus serves a stop near the Garneau, and the University Transit Station is a short walk away. The theatre has no dedicated parking lot, nearby parking is limited, and drivers should check street-parking signs. Allow time to find parking if you are driving, and use the current event instructions to confirm the venue before setting out.
Transit and parking notes are specific to the Garneau and should not be applied automatically to an EIFF screening at Landmark. Check the transit or parking plan for the exact venue shown on your ticket. If arriving by car at the Garneau, nearby parking may be limited; read posted street-parking signs rather than assuming that a space is unrestricted.
What to bring and how to handle ticket entry
NorthwestFest accepts digital tickets shown on a phone or device and describes a Showpass QR-code option; printed tickets are also accepted. If picking up a physical pass, its instructions recommend bringing a printed or digital receipt. Use the format and proof of purchase requested for your admission type, and keep the relevant ticket or booking code accessible when you arrive.
A phone charger can be a useful convenience if your ticket is stored digitally, but it is optional rather than a festival requirement. If you prefer not to depend on your phone, the organizer’s stated printed-ticket option provides an alternative where applicable. A charger is simply a practical backup for a phone-based ticket plan, not a special entry requirement.
Before leaving, check that you can retrieve the correct ticket, QR code, booking confirmation, or receipt for the event. For physical pass pickup, follow the instructions attached to that pass and bring the receipt as specified. Keep these materials handy so you are not trying to find them while approaching the queue.
Common planning mistakes to avoid
- Using last year’s dates as a schedule: the cited EIFF, NorthwestFilmFest, and Rainbow Visions editions were all over by October 13, 2026. Look for a newly published event date.
- Assuming every NorthwestFest festival has the same dates or terms: NorthwestFest lists multiple events. Confirm the name of the festival on the schedule and on any pass before booking.
- Assuming a pass guarantees entry to every screening: NorthwestFest says sold-out screenings are not available to passholders, and its instructions describe advance booking codes.
- Going to the venue from an old entrance note: queueing and entry instructions can be tied to a specific event. Check the current page before traveling.
- Leaving access questions until arrival: the Garneau’s published information describes stairs and washroom limitations. Contact the organizer or venue in advance to discuss the screening and possible accommodations.
- Assuming a festival list is exhaustive: the organizers and Metro Cinema calendars are practical starting points, not a complete inventory of every film event in Edmonton.
- Assuming the festival name determines the venue: EIFF listed Landmark and Metro Cinema for its 2026 edition. Confirm the address on the listing for your own screening.
- Confusing a pass with a reservation: check whether you need to use a booking code to reserve a particular show, and whether that show is still available.
A quick decision checklist
- Is the event a future edition, with dates confirmed by its organizer?
- Does the program include the kind of film or filmmaker event you want?
- Have you checked the specific screening’s ticket availability and any pass-booking requirement?
- Do you know the venue, entrance, and best way to get there?
- Have you contacted the organizer or theatre about access needs before purchasing or traveling?
- Can you present the ticket, QR code, printed ticket, booking code, or receipt required for your admission?
