How to Find Accessible Books for Readers With Low Vision or Dyslexia

Find an accessible reading format that fits the task, locate library and specialist services, and check title, eligibility, and device access before paying.

Start with the format that feels easiest for the kind of reading you want to do, then check whether the exact title is available through a library or specialist service and whether it works with your device or assistive technology. Accessible reading is personal: one reader might prefer audio for a long book, adjustable digital text for a short article, and large print for another task. No single format, font, or device suits everyone with low vision or dyslexia.

Choose a format by how you want to read

Accessible books are available in audio, adjustable e-book text, large or giant print, braille, tactile formats, and books that combine print with braille. The right choice depends on the reader, the task, and the specific book. If print reading causes fatigue, listening may be more comfortable; if you want to read visually, adjustable text or large print may help. Shared reading or tactile pictures may suit children and families.

RNIB’s guidance notes that choosing a format can take time, practice, and support. It can be useful to try more than one approach rather than expecting one format to work for every book or situation. For a child, RNIB recommends advice from vision-impairment education and clinical professionals, as well as time to explore different formats. Having the same title in more than one format can be useful when vision fatigue changes what is comfortable.

Low vision and dyslexia do not point to one universal solution. A reader may enjoy listening to a novel but prefer to see diagrams or short passages in print. Another may find larger, adjustable text more comfortable, or prefer braille or a reading format that supports their assistive technology. The useful question is not simply “Which format is best?” but “Which format works for this reader, this book, and this occasion?” Do not assume that a particular typeface or device will help every dyslexic reader.

Audio

Talking books and audiobooks are worth exploring when listening is comfortable or reading print is tiring. Check your local public library and any specialist library serving your area. Availability, borrowing arrangements, and eligibility differ by service.

Audio can make a long book easier to enjoy when sustained visual reading is tiring, but it is not automatically the right choice for every person or task. Consider whether listening is comfortable and whether the service has the title you want. Some specialist services lend audio books to eligible readers; a general audiobook listing and a specialist talking-book collection may have different catalogues and access rules.

E-books

Digital books may let you adjust text size, font or typeface, colour, and contrast. Depending on the book, reading app, and assistive technology, you may also be able to use speech or a braille display. These features are not guaranteed for every title or app: check the exact combination you plan to use before buying or borrowing.

Digital text can be useful when you want to change presentation without locating a separate large-print edition. Still, “e-book” describes a format, not a promise that every setting is available. Some options may only appear after opening the book, and the reading experience can change between apps, devices, and individual titles. A free app or a phone or tablet you already own may be enough to test the features before you consider buying a dedicated e-reader.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large and giant print

Search for the title together with “large print” or “giant print,” and check the print size and page layout before ordering. A larger font does not guarantee a comfortable page: line length, spacing, contrast, and the amount of text on each page can also affect readability. Public libraries and specialist suppliers may have editions that are not easy to find through a general book search.

If you are comparing editions, ask about the actual print size and layout rather than relying only on the label. A large-print edition may have fewer words on a page and a different physical size from a standard edition. These differences can affect how easy it is to handle or carry, as well as how comfortable the page feels. RNIB’s guidance for children discusses print-size categories, but those categories should not be treated as a universal technical or legal standard.

Braille, tactile books, and shared reading

Look to specialist services for braille books and tactile or dual-format titles. Some children’s books combine print and braille or include tactile images, making them suitable for reading together. Catalogues and eligibility rules vary by country and provider.

These formats can offer different ways to access the same story or information. If a book will be used for shared reading, check whether it includes both print and braille, tactile illustrations, or another feature that suits the reader and their reading partner. Specialist providers may be a more useful search starting point than an ordinary bookseller for tactile or dual-format titles.

Start with a library or specialist service

Your local public library is a practical first stop. Ask whether it offers audiobooks, e-books, large-print books, or referrals to a specialist service, and which app or device is needed for digital borrowing. Specialist libraries can offer formats and collections that a general library may not carry. The services below are country-specific examples, not a guarantee of access outside their stated arrangements.

When you contact a library, be specific about both the book and the access you need. For example, ask whether a title is available as audio, in large print, or as an adjustable e-book, and whether the digital edition works with your preferred app or assistive technology. If the catalogue does not show the format you need, staff may be able to explain other search terms, editions, or specialist services to try. Borrowing is a useful way to test a format or app before paying, where a suitable loan is available.

For readers in the United Kingdom

RNIB provides information about its library, accessible formats, and specialist providers. Its Reading and Books page, accessed in 2026, describes an RNIB Library collection of more than 60,000 items, including more than 11,000 braille books, and a free Talking Books service with more than 40,000 titles. These are service collection descriptions, not a promise that every title is available to every reader or that all counts refer to unique books.

For physical and tactile options, RNIB’s provider directory includes services such as Access2Books, Guide Dogs CustomEyes, ClearVision, and Living Paintings, alongside the RNIB Shop. Check each provider for its current catalogue, eligibility, and lending or purchase terms.

RNIB Bookshare is an education resource, not a general unrestricted consumer e-book shop. RNIB says schools and vision-support services can create organizational accounts and provide learners and families with login details. Ask the school or vision-support service whether the learner can register and whether the required titles are available.

For readers in the United States

The Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) provides audiobooks and braille books through a network of cooperating libraries. Eligible patrons can use BARD downloads, and NLS also offers free delivery by mail. The NLS catalogue contains hundreds of thousands of records across talking books, braille books, music scores, magazines, and other accessible materials; a catalogue record does not mean every item is immediately available in every format.

NLS says patrons must be certified by a competent authority as unable to read regular print. Contact NLS or a cooperating library for current eligibility criteria and signup instructions. The NLS page on reading disabilities also lists student-oriented resources, including Bookshare and Learning Ally; ask the school or relevant organization about registration and title access.

Outside the UK and United States

Ask your local library, disability organization, school, or education-support service which accessible formats and specialist libraries operate in your country. UK and US services do not establish eligibility or availability elsewhere. Requirements may include local residency, professional certification, or registration through an organization.

Check an e-book before committing to it

An e-book may be a good fit if you need to enlarge or restyle text, change colour or contrast, or use speech or a braille display. But accessibility depends on more than the file format: the book, app, device, and assistive technology must work together. RNIB notes that public libraries increasingly offer e-books and may be able to advise which reader or app is required.

  1. Confirm the exact title and edition. Check that the accessible features you need are available in that book, not just advertised by the store or app in general.
  2. Test the reading controls. See whether you can change text size, typeface, colour, and contrast. Some settings may only become available after opening a book.
  3. Check speech and braille support. If you rely on text-to-speech or a braille display, confirm compatibility with the specific app and title.
  4. Try it on your own device. A feature listed by a service may behave differently on your phone, tablet, e-reader, or computer. Use a sample, library loan, or other available preview before spending money.
  5. Understand the account and app connection. Purchased e-books may be tied to a particular store or reading app. Consider whether you could still access the book if you change devices or apps.

For a practical test, open the sample or loan on the device you expect to use and try the settings that matter to you. Check whether the text remains comfortable when enlarged, whether colour and contrast choices are available, and whether speech or braille output works as expected. If the book is difficult to use in one app, do not assume that another app will solve the issue: verify that the title can be opened there and that its features remain available.

You may not need to buy a dedicated e-reader: an existing phone or tablet, together with a suitable free app, may provide the adjustments you need. If you are considering a new device, treat it as an option to test against your requirements, not a universal solution. A possible search phrase is “e-reader with adjustable text,” but compare the features of the actual device and book rather than buying on the label alone.

Find a specific book in the format you need

  1. Write down the title and author. If you are flexible, note alternative editions or formats that would also work.
  2. Search your public-library catalogue. Try terms such as “audiobook,” “large print,” or “e-book,” and ask library staff about formats that are not obvious in the catalogue.
  3. Check the relevant specialist service. Use a national or local accessible-reading service, and verify its eligibility rules and delivery method.
  4. For a student, ask the school or support team. A school, disability-support office, or vision-support service may be able to identify education-focused services and arrange organizational access.
  5. For large print, search by format as well as title. Include “large print” or “giant print,” then check the actual print size and layout with the library or supplier.
  6. Confirm access before paying. Check availability, borrowing limits or purchase terms, device and app requirements, and whether you can use the book with your preferred assistive technology.

If your first search fails, try the author’s name, an alternative edition, or another format rather than concluding that the book is unavailable. Ask library staff or a specialist provider whether they can locate a different edition or suggest a related title. Large collections are useful places to search, but collection size does not mean every title is held or that every item is available in every format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare options against your needs

Before choosing, compare the practical experience rather than relying on a format label alone. A short trial can reveal whether a book is comfortable to use and whether its access features work in practice.

  • Title availability: Is this exact book available in the format you want, from a service you can use?
  • Access features: Can you magnify text, adjust contrast, use speech, or connect a braille display as needed?
  • Device and dexterity: Can you comfortably operate the device, app, page controls, and any required accessories?
  • Eligibility and cost: Is the service free to borrow from, restricted to eligible readers, or a commercial purchase? Are there borrowing limits or other conditions?
  • Future access: If you buy a digital book, will it remain accessible if you change apps, devices, or store accounts?

Cost is not just the price displayed next to a book. A library loan or eligibility-based specialist service may provide access without a retail purchase, while commercial large-print editions or e-books have purchase terms. Check whether the service is free, whether eligibility or registration applies, and whether borrowing limits or other conditions affect access. For digital purchases, also consider the store or app connection: a low-cost book is not a good fit if it cannot be used with your preferred device or assistive technology.

Accessibility and convenience may point in different directions. A format that is comfortable but hard to obtain may not meet an immediate need; a readily available digital edition may require an app or account you do not want to use. Compare the title, access features, ease of operation, costs or borrowing conditions, and future access together. If possible, borrow or preview the exact edition first.

Education resources for students and families

Schools and education-support services may know about accessible textbooks and reading resources that are not offered as ordinary consumer e-books. In the UK, ask the school or vision-support service about RNIB Bookshare and how its organizational accounts work. In the US, NLS identifies Bookshare and Learning Ally among student-oriented resources. For either option, confirm who can register, what documentation or organizational involvement is required, and whether the needed title is in the catalogue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For children with low vision, format choice may change with the activity or with fatigue. A child might listen to a longer story, use adjustable digital text for another task, or share a tactile book with an adult. Vision-impairment education and clinical professionals can help families explore what is comfortable without assuming that one format or font will suit every child.

Families can ask the school or support team practical questions: which service can provide the material, whether the learner or organization registers, how the family receives access details, and whether the particular book is available. These details matter because education-focused services are not necessarily open as general consumer shops. A service’s existence does not guarantee that a particular student qualifies or that the title is in its catalogue.

Common problems and what to check

The book is labelled accessible, but the text is still hard to read

Check which controls the specific book and app actually provide. Look for text size, typeface, colour, contrast, and spacing options, and test the layout after making changes. If the book is a fixed-layout edition or does not offer the adjustments you need, look for another edition or format.

The e-book works in one app but not another

Digital books may be linked to a store or its reading app, and features vary between reader-and-book combinations. Check compatibility before purchase, especially if you rely on speech, braille, or particular display settings.

The title does not appear in the catalogue

Try searching by author, title variants, or format. Ask a librarian or specialist service whether it can locate another edition or advise on an alternative. A service’s large collection does not mean it holds every title.

You are unsure whether you qualify

Contact the service or a cooperating library and ask what eligibility evidence is accepted and who can certify it. Do not assume that a diagnosis or reading difficulty automatically qualifies someone for a particular service; rules are specific to the provider and location.

You are considering a device because of one accessibility feature

First check whether an app on a phone, tablet, or other device you already own offers the features you need. If you are comparing e-readers, test the device with the kind of book you plan to read and confirm that the store’s titles support your settings. A device is a tool to consider, not a guarantee that every e-book will be accessible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find accessible books if I have low vision or dyslexia?

Start with your local public library and explain which format or access features you need. Search the exact title plus terms such as “audiobook,” “large print,” or “giant print,” and check relevant specialist services or education-support organizations. Confirm title availability, eligibility, device or app compatibility, and any costs or borrowing conditions before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What formats are available for accessible reading?

Options include audio, adjustable e-books, large or giant print, braille, tactile books, and books combining print with braille. Which works best depends on the reader, the title, and the task; the same person may prefer different formats at different times.

Can I use an e-book with text-to-speech or a braille display?

Possibly, but support varies by book, reading app, device, and assistive technology. Check the exact title and app, and test a sample or library loan where possible. Do not assume that a feature advertised by a store works with every book.

Are RNIB Bookshare and NLS available to everyone?

No. RNIB Bookshare is an education resource accessed through organizational accounts, such as those created by schools or vision-support services. US NLS services are for eligible patrons and require certification by a competent authority as unable to read regular print. Ask the relevant organization or cooperating library about current rules and registration.

Do I need to buy a dedicated e-reader?

Not necessarily. A phone or tablet you already own and a suitable free app may offer the adjustments you need. Try the exact book and accessibility features before buying a new device; e-readers and apps vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a large-print edition always be easier to read?

Not always. Check the actual print size and page layout, including spacing, line length, contrast, and how much text appears on each page. A format label alone cannot guarantee that a particular edition will be comfortable.

The Bottom Line

Choose by the way you want to read, then verify the exact title, format, eligibility, and device or app requirements. Start with a local library or the relevant specialist service, and try the book before paying when you can. Accessible reading is individual: different formats may suit different readers, books, and moments.
