Keep the prerecorded 4K file and the live stream to YouTube as two separate encoding jobs. For the file, test a quality-based encode on representative footage and compare detail and size; for the outgoing live feed, follow YouTube’s current ingest settings—CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. You do not need to store a loop file at YouTube’s high recommended bitrate for 4K uploads.
Why a 4K loop file and a 4K live stream need different settings
A prerecorded video is an asset stored on disk. Its bitrate largely determines how much space it occupies, while its encoder settings affect the visible quality. The live encoder then reads that asset and sends a separate real-time feed to YouTube, which transcodes the incoming stream for viewers’ devices and networks. YouTube’s recommendations for uploading a 4K video are not the required bitrate for live ingest.
For 2160p SDR uploads, YouTube currently recommends 35–45 Mbps at 24, 25, or 30 fps, and 53–68 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps. Those figures describe uploads, not a target archive size for a video you will play into a livestream. [YouTube upload encoding settings]
Prepare the footage before encoding
Confirm resolution, frame rate, and dynamic range
Check that the source is actually 3840 Ă— 2160, the dimensions YouTube identifies as 4K, and note its frame rate and whether it is SDR or HDR. A 4K label alone does not reveal how much detail or motion the footage contains. [YouTube: 4K video resolution]

Choose a codec the whole playback chain can handle
Consider both the encoder used to create the file and the software or hardware that must decode it during continuous playback. H.264 is the codec in YouTube’s upload recommendations. YouTube live ingest supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in applicable configurations; availability depends on the encoder and setup. A more efficient codec is not useful if your playback chain cannot decode it reliably in real time. [YouTube upload encoding settings] [YouTube live encoder settings]
Choose a source-file rate-control method
Quality-based encoding: start with a sample
Quality-based or constant-quality encoding aims for a chosen visual quality rather than a fixed output size. The resulting bitrate—and therefore file size—varies with the footage. Fine texture, fast movement, gradients, and dark scenes can all affect the result. FFmpeg documents constant-quality, constant-bitrate, and variable-bitrate approaches as distinct rate-control choices; none provides a universal quality or size guarantee. [FFmpeg documentation]

- Pick a representative short section of your video, including its most demanding scenes if possible.
- Encode that section at several quality settings supported by your chosen encoder.
- Compare the files at full resolution. Look closely at fine detail, gradients, motion, and shadow areas.
- Record both the setting and resulting file size, then choose the smallest result whose visible quality is acceptable for your footage.
- Encode the full library only after the sample gives you a reliable expectation for quality and storage.
There is no single CRF value or quality setting that will produce the same visual result or file size for every encoder and source. Treat sample encoding as a decision test, not a promise.
Bitrate-targeted encoding: use when size predictability matters
If you need to plan around an approximate file size, use a bitrate-targeted workflow and estimate from the average output bitrate and duration. A target bitrate makes storage easier to budget, but it does not guarantee a particular visual quality across different footage. Allow extra space for audio and container overhead, and use the measured output rather than assuming the target is exact. [FFmpeg documentation]

Estimate storage from bitrate and running time
As a planning estimate, multiply average bitrate by duration and divide by eight to convert bits to bytes. At a sustained 10 Mbps, that works out to about 4.5 GB of decimal data per hour, or about 108 GB for 24 hours, before audio and container overhead. This is arithmetic, not a YouTube storage recommendation. A variable-bitrate file may differ because its average bitrate changes with the content.
For a library, calculate from measured output sizes and the number of hours you intend to retain. Resolution by itself is not enough to estimate disk capacity.

Set the outgoing live stream separately
Once the source file is ready, configure the live encoder for YouTube’s ingest requirements. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. The recommended 4K live bitrate varies by codec and frame rate; use the current table for the codec your encoder actually sends. [YouTube live encoder settings]
| Live ingest format | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps, H.264 | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps, H.264 | 50 Mbps |
These recommendations are from YouTube’s live settings page as surfaced in 2026; the table can change, so check it again when configuring a stream. The values apply to live ingest, not to the stored loop-file bitrate. [YouTube live encoder settings]

Make a 24/7 run dependable
A compact file is only one part of a continuous broadcast. Before leaving a stream unattended, test the complete playback and ingest path and check that your network and archive can support the intended run.
- Leave upload-bandwidth headroom above the live encoder’s bitrate rather than planning to consume all available upload capacity.
- Test video, motion, and audio at the intended resolution and frame rate before starting a continuous run.
- If you keep local archive files, verify their integrity and account for how quickly the library grows.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health after going live so you can spot ingest problems rather than assuming the signal is stable.
YouTube’s operational guidance covers bandwidth, testing, archive files, and stream-health monitoring. [YouTube live streaming tips]
Choose local encoding or hosted automation
Local encoder and storage
A local setup gives you direct control over the files and encoding workflow. It also depends on your own playback device, storage, network connection, and continuous operation. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos; the listing is not an endorsement by YouTube. Check any service’s current capabilities and terms before choosing it. [YouTube verified encoders]
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
