To download a movie to a Kindle Fire, open an authorized app such as Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, or YouTube, then tap Download on a title that supports offline viewing. Play it later from that app’s Downloads section. The download is normally app-controlled, not a regular video file you can move to another player.
First, check which Fire tablet you have
“Kindle Fire” is the older name for Amazon’s tablet line; current models are generally branded Fire tablets, including Fire HD and Fire Max devices. A Fire tablet is not the same as a Kindle e-reader, which is designed primarily for reading. The exact tablet model, Fire OS version, country, app version, title, and subscription plan can affect whether an app or download feature is available.
To check your software version, open Settings → Device Options → System Updates. Netflix specifically requires Fire OS 7 or later for downloads on Amazon Fire tablets. That requirement is specific to Netflix, not a guarantee that every app works on every Fire OS 7 device. Very old Kindle Fire models may not support current apps, DRM, or download features.
Download a movie from Prime Video
- Connect the tablet to Wi-Fi and open the Prime Video app.
- Find the movie and open its detail page.
- Tap the download option if it is shown.
- When the download finishes, open the app’s Downloads area to play it offline.
For a TV series, Prime Video may offer a season download option, or you can download individual episodes from the episode list. Amazon’s Prime Video help page describes downloads on Fire tablets and other supported devices.

Being able to stream a title does not mean it can be downloaded. Eligibility and expiration rules can differ for a title included with Prime, a rental, and a purchase. A download is not a permanent, unrestricted copy. Amazon also says downloaded Prime Video content cannot be played through Chromecast or AirPlay; watching on a television may require supported hardware and adapters.
Download a movie from Netflix
- Connect to Wi-Fi, open the Amazon Appstore, search for Netflix, and install or update the app.
- Open Netflix and sign in to the account you use for the service.
- Find a movie and look for the Download icon on its title page.
- Tap the icon and wait for the download to finish.
- Open Netflix’s downloads area to watch it offline.
Netflix says downloads on Amazon Fire tablets require Fire OS 7 or later. Its current help page lists Fire Max 11, Fire HD 10, and Fire HD 8 among models capable of Full HD playback; check the requirements for your particular tablet and app. See Netflix’s Amazon Fire tablet guidance and its download troubleshooting instructions.
If the Download icon is missing, the title may not be licensed for download. Other possibilities include an unsupported Fire OS version, an app that needs updating, insufficient storage, account or regional restrictions, or a download limit.

Download a movie from Disney+
- Install or update Disney+ from the Amazon Appstore and sign in.
- Open the movie’s page and tap Download below the Play button, if available.
- Choose a download quality if the app offers the choice.
- When it finishes, open the Downloads area in Disney+ to play the movie.
Disney+ supports downloads on eligible Amazon Fire tablets, but not every title or plan qualifies. The service offers Standard, Medium, and High quality settings; higher quality uses more storage and takes longer to download. Disney+ also says logging out removes downloaded content, so you would need to download it again after signing back in. Details are in the Disney+ downloads guide.

YouTube Premium videos
- Sign in to the YouTube app with the account that has YouTube Premium.
- Open the video and tap Download below it.
- To find it later, tap your profile picture and choose Downloads.
Offline availability is subject to YouTube’s content and regional rules. YouTube’s Android guidance says downloaded videos may be playable offline for up to 29 days before the device must reconnect; some regions use a shorter 48-hour period. Treat those as service rules that vary with region and content, not a guarantee for every video. Downloads are encrypted and playable in the YouTube app, not as files for another player. Purchased YouTube movies
A YouTube Premium membership is not required to use the purchase-download feature. Sign in to the same Google Account used to buy the movie, then download it in YouTube on a supported device. The download remains controlled by the app and supported-device rules; it is not an exported video file. See YouTube’s guidance for purchased movies and TV episodes.

Prepare the tablet for offline viewing
- Check free space: A high-quality movie can use substantial storage. Disney+ explicitly notes that higher download quality uses more space.
- Choose a lower quality if needed: Standard or Medium quality can be a better fit when storage is limited.
- Use Wi-Fi deliberately: Download over Wi-Fi unless you intend to use cellular data.
- Keep the tablet powered: Plug it in for a long download, and avoid interrupting the app while it runs.
- Do not assume an SD card will work: Support depends on the tablet, app, and configuration. Amazon’s Prime Video guidance discusses storage-location choices for Android and Windows, but that does not establish that every Fire tablet or app can save downloads to a card. Amazon does not recommend USB-connected drives for Prime Video downloads.
- Verify before leaving: Wait for completion, open the app’s Downloads section, and start the movie while still online. You can then enable Airplane Mode and confirm playback before your trip.
- Stay signed in: Avoid logging out or uninstalling the app. Some services require the device to reconnect periodically to refresh offline authorization.
Why a streaming download is not a normal video file
Offline viewing is not the same as owning an unrestricted MP4. Services such as Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube keep downloads within their apps and may apply encryption, account checks, title-specific rights, and expiration rules. You generally cannot open one in a file manager, transfer it to another tablet, or play it in a third-party video player.
Use the service’s official app for authorized offline viewing. Screen recording protected video, removing DRM, or downloading from unofficial sites is not a safe substitute and is not needed to watch eligible titles offline. A digital purchase can still be subject to account access, licensing, DRM, and vendor availability rules.
