How to Donate Effectively to Organizations Supporting Newly Arrived Migrants

A practical guide to supporting newly arrived migrants: choose a relevant local organization, match your gift to a confirmed need and verify the payment page.

If you do not have a confirmed request for a specific item, start by asking a credible organization serving newcomers in the destination community whether it can use an unrestricted cash gift. Donate goods only when a local provider confirms what it needs and can accept, and verify the organization and payment channel before giving.

Start by identifying who and where you want to support

“Newly arrived migrants” is a broad description, not a single service category. Refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants may face some similar practical needs, but their legal statuses and the programs available to them are not interchangeable. An organization that supports refugee resettlement may not serve every migrant group, and a service may be limited to a particular location or eligibility group.

Before choosing a recipient, decide what you mean by helping: immediate relief, settlement after arrival, legal or social-service navigation, or longer-term integration. Then identify the community where the people you want to support are settling. Services such as housing referrals, language learning and local case management depend on the place and the provider. The official guidance summarized here chiefly concerns refugees and displaced people, so check that a program’s stated population and jurisdiction match your intention.

If you do not have a specific family or local program in mind, begin with organizations that actually provide newcomer services in the relevant area. Depending on the location, these may include resettlement agencies, community organizations, sponsorship groups, or legal and social-service nonprofits. A group’s general commitment to humanitarian work is not by itself evidence that it serves newly arrived people in the community you have in mind.

It can help to turn a broad intention into a specific question: do you want to support people arriving in a particular city, refugees resettling through a formal program, or newcomers who need a particular kind of assistance? If you cannot answer that yet, look for a provider whose service area and population are clearly stated and ask it to explain whom a general donation would reach. This avoids assuming that every migrant-serving organization has the same eligibility rules or offers the same services.

Choose a form of support that fits the organization’s current needs

Cash: the flexible starting point

When there is no confirmed item request, a monetary gift gives an organization more room to respond as needs change. UNHCR encourages unrestricted donations because they can be directed to where the organization’s needs are greatest. Its guidance on cash assistance also explains that, where markets function and safe delivery is possible, giving people cash can let them choose their immediate priorities with dignity and support local economies.

Those points are not a guarantee that cash is equally suitable in every emergency or for every provider. Local conditions, delivery capacity and the organization’s programs matter. Ask whether the organization accepts unrestricted gifts and whether it has a current appeal for a defined service. A designated gift may make sense when it fits a stated, current need; a restriction is not automatically more effective just because it sounds more specific.

A local newcomer-serving organization may be better placed than a distant donor to determine whether its current funding priorities include rent, food, transportation, language learning, legal navigation, employment support or case management. These are examples of possible service areas, not a claim that every provider offers them or needs funding for each one. If the organization publishes a current appeal, read what it says the funds support and contact it if the scope is unclear.

If you are deciding between an unrestricted gift and one tied to a specific service, ask how the restriction works. Find out whether the organization is currently raising funds for that service, what happens if the appeal is fully funded, and whether a contribution can be redirected if circumstances change. A clear answer helps you understand whether your preference fits the organization’s ability to use the money. If it cannot use a restricted gift as intended, ask whether an unrestricted contribution would be more useful.

Cash may also be the practical choice when you are unsure which household items are appropriate, do not live near a provider, or cannot arrange delivery. This is not a claim that cash always produces a better outcome: UNHCR’s guidance makes the conditions for cash assistance important, and a local provider may have a particular need that money cannot address as readily. The point is to ask the organization rather than substitute a donor’s guess for its operating knowledge.

Goods: donate only against a confirmed request

Furniture, clothing, food, dishes and children’s items can be useful in resettlement. Canadian federal guidance names examples like these while directing donors to local organizations and service providers. They are not a universal shopping list: what is useful depends on the provider’s current needs, the households it serves, and its ability to receive, store and distribute items.

Before buying, collecting or transporting anything, ask the receiving organization:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which specific items does it need now, and in what quantity?
  • What condition must each item be in?
  • Where and when should donations be delivered?
  • Can the organization store and distribute the items?
  • Does it have another way you can help if it cannot accept the goods?

Wait for clear answers before organizing a collection. A well-intentioned delivery can still create sorting, storage and transport work if the provider did not request it. UNHCR says it does not accept small-scale donations such as clothing, blankets, food or toys; collecting and shipping many small gifts is inefficient for its operations. That policy applies to UNHCR and should not be assumed to describe every local nonprofit. It is, however, a clear reason not to send unsolicited household goods to an international agency.

When aid providers determine that items are needed, UNHCR operational guidance favors local procurement when feasible. Buying locally can support local businesses and avoid the potential effects imported goods may have on local markets. Donors should therefore follow the provider’s plan rather than assume that shipping items from elsewhere is the best way to meet a need.

If you are asking “What can I donate to newly arrived refugees?” or “Where can I donate furniture or clothes for refugees?”, the answer starts with the organization receiving the items, not a generic list. A provider might be able to distribute one type of furniture but have no capacity for another, or it may be accepting goods only at a designated place and time. Confirm the item, its condition, delivery arrangements and current need before spending money or recruiting others to contribute.

For a group collection, get the provider’s approval before announcing it. Share only the item list and logistics it has confirmed, and avoid inviting contributions the provider cannot accept. If the organization says it has enough, treat that answer as useful direction rather than a reason to persuade it to take more. Ask whether an alternative form of support is currently needed.

Volunteering and other non-cash support

Support need not be a donation of money or belongings. Official guidance points to skills-based volunteering, helping newcomers access work, community connection, training, hiring refugees and supporting refugee-owned businesses. These possibilities are most useful when they match an organization’s current request and the preferences of the people concerned.

Contact a relevant provider before offering volunteer time or expertise. Ask what role it needs filled, what skills or availability are useful, and how it coordinates volunteers. For offers involving employment, training or direct contact, work through the organization or ask how to make the offer in a way that fits its program. Do not assume that a service provider can place every volunteer or that an individual wants the same kind of assistance as someone else.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

For example, an offer to help with a particular skill is useful only if a provider has a role for it and can coordinate the work. If you want to help someone find employment, ask an organization how it connects newcomers with work or training rather than assuming that an informal offer is the right fit. Hiring refugees and supporting refugee-owned businesses are also ways to contribute, but keep the offer relevant to the person’s own interest and the organization’s approach.

How to choose and verify an organization

  1. Start with the destination community. Look for a provider serving people in the place where you want your support to have an effect. Settlement programs and urgent needs are local.
  2. Check whom it serves. Confirm that the organization’s stated population and services fit your intention, including whether it serves refugees, asylum seekers, other migrants, or a defined subset.
  3. Ask what is useful now. Contact the organization or review its current appeal. Find out whether it prefers an unrestricted gift, a contribution designated for a named service, volunteer help or specific goods.
  4. Assess its delivery role. Determine whether it provides settlement support directly or coordinates assistance through trusted local partners. A clear explanation of how the organization works helps you judge whether it fits your goal.
  5. Verify its legal identity where possible. Use the relevant local charity or nonprofit registry when one exists. In Canada, federal guidance points donors to charity listings to check registration and potential eligibility for a tax receipt. That Canadian advice is jurisdiction-specific; do not assume the same rules apply elsewhere.
  6. Use a trusted referral when you need one. In parts of Canada, the federal guide recommends 211 to locate newcomer-serving organizations; availability varies by region. In the United States, State Department guidance describes local affiliates in the refugee resettlement network and their coordination with communities. That government page is archived, so confirm current local contacts rather than treating it as a live directory.

For a practical comparison between organizations, consider the population and place served, whether the current need is clear, the provider’s capacity to deliver or coordinate support, the form of donation it requests, and whether you can verify its identity and basic reporting. These checks help you compare fit without pretending that a single number captures an organization’s value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you compare two or more options, apply the same questions to each rather than relying on a polished appeal alone. Does the group serve the population and location you care about? Can it explain its current need and whether it can use a flexible contribution? Does it provide assistance directly or coordinate with local partners? Is the requested form of support clear, and can you verify its identity and giving channel? An organization need not use identical language or programs to another one to be a reasonable choice; the aim is to assess fit and clarity.

Basic reporting can help you understand an organization’s work, but do not treat a single overhead ratio as a ranking of effectiveness. The available official guidance does not establish a comparable impact-per-dollar figure across organizations. Nor does the fact that an organization is locally based, large, or familiar by itself show that it is the best match for your goal. Look for a clear connection between the recipient, the work and the contribution you intend to make.

Protect your donation from impersonation and payment fraud

UNHCR warns that fake pages can imitate its branding and solicit money for refugees and migrants. If a page seems suspicious or you are unsure it is official, leave it and navigate to UNHCR’s official site yourself. Apply the same basic caution to any recipient: use an organization’s known official website or an independently verified directory, and check that the payee shown at payment matches the organization you intended to support.

  • Do not treat an unsolicited message or social post as proof that a fundraiser is legitimate.
  • Check the web address carefully before entering payment details.
  • If a link raises doubts, do not continue through it; find the organization’s official site independently.
  • Confirm the payee before submitting a payment, particularly when a third-party platform is involved.
  • If you cannot verify the recipient or the payment destination, pause and contact the organization through a channel you located independently.

These checks do not require assuming that every online appeal is fraudulent. They are a way to avoid sending money through a page that only appears to represent the organization you chose. Be especially careful when an appeal asks you to act immediately but gives you no straightforward way to confirm the recipient or the payment destination. Do not let urgency replace verification.

Questions to ask before you give

A short conversation can establish whether your intended contribution fits the provider’s work. Ask direct questions, and make a different choice if the answers do not match your goal.

  • Who will this support? Ask which population and community the program serves, and whether the service is intended for newly arrived people.
  • What is the current need? Ask what the organization is prioritizing now, rather than relying on an old appeal or a general list of possible needs.
  • Which contribution is useful? Ask whether it can use unrestricted funds, whether it has a current designated appeal, or whether it wants a particular item or volunteer skill.
  • How will it be delivered? Ask whether the organization provides the service itself or works through local partners.
  • How can I verify the donation channel? Confirm the official giving page and the payee before sending payment.

If the organization cannot accept your proposed goods, ask whether it has a current alternative. If you cannot establish that a recipient serves the intended community, choose a provider whose service area and role are clearer rather than guessing.

You can also ask how to make the contribution in a way that is easiest for the provider to process. For an item donation, that means confirming delivery details and capacity; for volunteer time, it means asking about roles and coordination; for money, it means confirming whether the gift can be unrestricted or whether a current appeal is available. These simple checks help ensure that the help you offer is something the organization can actually use.

What not to infer from donation claims

There is no comparable impact figure established here that ranks organizations or proves how much money will help one family. Avoid claims such as a fixed donation amount supporting a particular household unless the original publisher, date, geography and meaning of the figure are clear. Program costs can differ by service, place and circumstance, and a number without those qualifications can mislead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a single overhead ratio is not enough to establish which organization is most effective. Compare the fit between the organization, the people it serves, its current need and your intended form of help. If you need a specific local recommendation, first establish the city or region, the population you want to support, and whether your priority is emergency relief, resettlement, legal support or longer-term integration.

Government and referral guidance can also have limits. The United States State Department page describing resettlement affiliates is archived, so it is a starting point for understanding the network, not confirmation that a particular contact remains current. Canadian 211 availability varies by region, and Canadian charity-registration and tax-receipt guidance should not be applied to another country. Confirm local details with the relevant organization or current referral service.

Why flexible and requested support matters

UNHCR’s official FAQ puts its preference plainly: “We continue to encourage cash donations as this is one of the most effective ways to provide protection and shelter to refugees.” That statement describes UNHCR’s guidance; it is not a universal ranking of donation methods for every local program or emergency. For a donor, the useful principle is to let the provider’s real operating needs guide the form of support.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I help refugees in my community?

Start with a local resettlement agency, newcomer-serving organization or other provider whose stated service area and population match your goal. Ask what it needs now and whether an unrestricted cash gift, a current designated contribution, specific goods or volunteer skills would be useful. Refugee services and eligibility vary by place and program.

What can I donate to newly arrived refugees?

Cash is a flexible starting point when you do not have a confirmed request for goods. Furniture, clothing, food, dishes and children’s items may be useful in some settings, but contact the local provider first to confirm the exact items, condition, quantities and delivery arrangements it can accept.

Where can I donate furniture or clothes for refugees?

Ask a newcomer-serving organization or refugee resettlement provider in the destination community whether it currently accepts those items. Do not deliver or ship goods until the provider confirms what it needs and can store and distribute. UNHCR says it does not accept small-scale in-kind donations such as clothing, blankets, food or toys.

Is cash or a restricted donation better?

An unrestricted gift gives an organization flexibility to direct funds where its needs are greatest. A designated gift can fit when the organization has a current appeal for that service and can use the restriction. Ask how it handles a fully funded appeal or a change in circumstances; specificity alone does not make a gift more effective.

How do I know an online donation page is legitimate?

Navigate to the organization’s official website independently rather than relying only on an unsolicited link. Check the web address and confirm that the payee matches the organization before submitting payment. If you are unsure, leave the page and contact the organization using a channel you verified independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I volunteer instead of donating money?

Yes. Organizations may need skills-based volunteers, community connection, training or help supporting access to work, but roles and capacity vary. Contact a provider to ask what it currently needs and how it coordinates volunteers; do not assume it can place every volunteer or that every individual wants the same support.

How can I find a local newcomer-serving organization?

Begin with providers in the community where newcomers are settling. In parts of Canada, federal guidance points people to 211 and local newcomer organizations; availability varies by region. In the United States, refugee resettlement agencies have local affiliates, but confirm current contacts because the cited State Department page is archived.

The Bottom Line

For the most useful starting point, identify the community and population you want to support, then ask a credible local provider what it needs now. Choose flexible cash unless there is a clear reason to make a restricted gift; give goods or volunteer only when the organization confirms the fit. Verify the recipient and payment page independently, and do not rely on a single overhead figure or unsourced “amount helps one family” claim to rank organizations.
