To make a slicked-back ponytail, detangle your hair, choose a part and ponytail height, smooth hair toward that base in sections, then secure it with an elastic. Adjust the prep to your texture and the finish you want: curls can stay defined in the tail, while cream, gel, serum or spray are optional tools for hold and flyaways—not requirements for everyone.
Choose the height, part and finish
Decide where you want the ponytail to sit before you start. Low, mid-height and high ponytails all work; a high base draws attention toward the face, while mid or low placement can look softer or more classic. Choose a center part, side part or no part. You can aim for a soft, shiny, wet-looking or matte finish, and keep natural texture in the ponytail or smooth the lengths.
These choices affect how much smoothing and product you may want, but no one combination is established as best for every hair type or occasion. Ghd’s slicked-back ponytail tutorial and the Hair.com guide show different placement and styling options.
What you need
- A smoothing or paddle brush to direct hair toward the base.
- A fine-tooth comb for creating a clean part or refining the hairline.
- An elastic, plus bobby pins if you want to wrap a strand around the base.
- Optional styling cream or gel for hold, or serum or hairspray for the finish you want.
- Heat protectant only if you choose to blow-dry or straighten your hair.
The brush and elastic do most of the work. Start with little or no product if you are unsure; you can add a small amount where more control is needed.

How to slick your hair back in a ponytail
- Detangle and plan the base. Gently work through knots, starting at the ends and moving upward. Choose the height and part before smoothing so you can direct the hair consistently.
- Prep for your texture and finish. For a straight, smooth result, you can blow-dry with a brush and heat protectant, but heat is optional. For curls, Aveda’s low ponytail tutorial demonstrates misting the top section with water and applying curl enhancer there, while leaving the ponytail’s curls to be refreshed and scrunched later. That is one technique, not a universal wet-hair rule.
- Section and smooth toward the base. Divide longer or thicker hair into manageable sections. Brush each section toward the chosen ponytail position, then check from more than one direction for bumps. Hair.com quotes Pureology professional Steven Plascencia explaining that three large sections help with control and with directing where the base lands. Use smaller sections if they make your hair easier to manage.
- Gather and secure. Bring the smoothed sections together and fasten them with an elastic. For a more polished base, wrap a small section of the ponytail around the elastic and pin it discreetly.
- Refine the hairline and tail. Use a small amount of cream or gel on stubborn flyaways or baby hairs if desired. Add hairspray only if you want more hold. If you have curls in the ponytail, refresh and scrunch them rather than brushing them out.
Adapt the method to your hair
Fine or straight hair
Use a light hand with product and add more only where needed, especially if you want to avoid a heavy-looking root. A brushable cream or light serum is an option, not a requirement. The tutorials offer styling suggestions rather than a controlled comparison by hair density, so treat product amount as a personal adjustment.
Wavy hair
Smooth the base in sections, then decide whether to keep the ponytail’s wave or smooth its lengths. You can refresh the tail’s texture after securing it. The cited tutorials do not set a universal product amount or a dedicated method for every kind of wave.

Curly hair
For a defined curly tail, try the Aveda approach: dampen the top section, apply curl enhancer where you plan to slick it back, part and brush the base toward the ponytail position, then secure it. Refresh and scrunch the curls in the tail afterward. A little strong-hold gel on baby hairs is optional.
Coily or dense hair
Work in smaller, controlled sections and give yourself enough time to smooth the base. Choose a product for the hold and finish you want without treating flattened natural texture as the only successful result. The tutorials provide broader textured-hair guidance, not a detailed coily-specific procedure or a promise that every texture will produce the same finish.

Blow-drying or straightening is optional, not a prerequisite for a slicked-back ponytail. If you use heat, apply heat protectant and choose the level of smoothing that suits your hair and desired look.

A ponytail should feel secure without pulling painfully. L’Oréal Paris advises against wearing tight hairstyles every day, citing repeated pulling and stress on the scalp and strands. Vary your styles and take breaks from very tight ponytails.
