Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Design a live stream overlay by choosing the output format first, keeping the main content unobstructed, and adding only graphics that help viewers. In OBS, build the scene as ordered layers, use suitable transparent assets, and preview the finished layout at the sizes and on the devices where people will watch.
1. Decide what the viewer should see
Before making graphics, decide what deserves attention: the game, documentary footage, presenter, or another primary image. Add only useful supporting elements, such as a webcam frame, channel name, brief label, or social bar. Empty screen space does not need to be filled; each overlay element takes space away from the stream itself.
Choose the canvas and viewing format before you design. OBS describes 16:9 as a common viewing ratio and recommends examples such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720 for best results. These are guidance examples, not requirements for every platform or format. If you also plan vertical output, design a portrait composition rather than assuming a horizontal scene will simply fit.
OBS Aspect Ratio Guide explains how canvas ratios, scaling, and cropping affect the result.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Plan hierarchy, placement, and readability
Give the primary content the largest, clearest area. Keep camera frames, labels, and decorative details near the edges where practical, and check that they do not cover important action, faces, captions, or controls. Elgato notes that social bars are often horizontal and can be positioned at the top, bottom, or sides, provided they do not obstruct the main content.
- Prioritize: viewers should notice the stream content before the frame, labels, or effects.
- Use contrast: text and important shapes should remain distinguishable from changing footage behind them.
- Limit typography and colors: a restrained palette and consistent type hierarchy are easier to scan than many competing styles.
- Check platform UI: overlays use valuable screen area and can conflict with player controls. Twitch’s extension design guidance makes this point for Twitch video-overlay extensions; treat it as a useful screen-space principle, not a technical rule for every OBS scene.
For vertical output, adapt the composition, center the important visuals, and check the platform’s current safe-zone guidance. Twitch’s dual-format guidance recommends testing vertical scenes on a mobile device. Do not rely on unverified pixel measurements for safe zones.

3. Choose the right graphic assets
Static graphics and transparency
For a static overlay graphic that needs transparent areas, Elgato’s OBS guidance recommends PNG. Transparency lets the video show through the parts of the image that are not part of the design.
Animated graphics
For animated graphics that need transparency, the same guidance recommends WEBM. Preview the animation in the scene to make sure it does not distract from the content or make labels harder to read.

Webcam frames and masks
Choose a frame shape to suit the camera composition: widescreen, 4:3, vertical, or square. If the camera opening is nonrectangular, use a mask so the video fits the intended shape instead of extending beyond the frame.
4. Build and layer the overlay in OBS
OBS scenes are assembled from sources such as images, text, and captured video. Their order controls what appears in front: sources higher in the list appear above sources below them. The exact source names depend on what you are capturing, but this workflow follows OBS’s layer-based BRB-scene tutorial.

- Create or select a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes area to select an existing scene or add one for the stream layout you are designing.
- Add the background or base layer. In Sources, add an image source if your design includes a background graphic, then position and resize it in the preview.
- Add the captured content. Add the game, video, camera, or other content source that belongs in the scene. Keep its placement and size consistent with the canvas.
- Add foreground elements. Add image sources for frames or logos and text sources for labels. Position and resize them in the preview.
- Reorder sources. Put background elements behind the content and foreground frames or labels above it. Drag sources in the list or use OBS’s source-order controls, then confirm that no overlay hides the camera or important content.
- Review sizing. If a source’s ratio differs from the canvas, avoid stretching it as the automatic fix. OBS warns that stretching can distort or blur an image. Scaling or cropping may preserve the appearance better, but cropping removes part of the source.
For an official worked example of creating a scene, adding image and text sources, and changing source order, see OBS’s Be Right Back screen tutorial.

Inspect the complete scene, not just individual graphics in a design app. Check legibility, contrast, alignment, edge clipping, and whether anything covers the important picture. Preview at the output resolution and, if you support vertical viewing, on a mobile device as well.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, choosing a quality the connection can reliably support, and monitoring stream health. These are useful stream checks rather than a formal overlay-specific standard. See YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health guidance.
6. Common overlay problems and fixes
- The overlay hides gameplay, footage, or a presenter: shrink or move the frame or social bar, or remove an element that does not help viewers.
- An image looks stretched or blurry: check its proportions against the canvas. Scale it proportionally or crop deliberately instead of stretching it to fill.
- A transparent graphic has a solid background: check that the asset was exported with transparency and use a format suited to the asset, such as PNG for static graphics or WEBM for animated transparency.
- A webcam spills outside a shaped frame: verify the source order and use a suitable mask for a nonrectangular opening.
- Text is difficult to read on changing footage: improve contrast, simplify the label, or place it over a less variable area.
- A horizontal design feels cramped in portrait: make a separate vertical composition, keep key content centered, and test it on a phone rather than shrinking the horizontal layout.
- Elements collide with viewer controls: reposition them after previewing the player interface on the target platform and device.
