To shuffle videos in a YouTube Live broadcast, create a playlist of local files in OBS Studio using its VLC Video source, then enable Shuffle Playlist and, if you want the sequence to repeat, Loop Playlist. YouTube’s own playlist Loop control is for viewers watching regular videos; it does not shuffle the video feed in a live broadcast.
How a YouTube Live loop playlist works
YouTube’s viewer-side playlist controls and an encoder’s media controls do different jobs. The Loop control in YouTube Help’s instructions repeats playback for someone watching a video or playlist. For a live broadcast, an encoder sends the video feed to YouTube; the encoder must decide which local file plays next. That is where OBS’s playlist shuffle and loop settings come in.
This setup uses a playlist of local video files. The OBS guide does not establish that arbitrary YouTube watch-page links can be added to a VLC Video playlist. Check your installed OBS and VLC versions and test your actual files before scheduling a broadcast.
What you need
- OBS Studio, to assemble and send the broadcast.
- VLC installed on the same computer; OBS requires it for the VLC Video source.
- The video files you are authorized to stream, accessible from that computer.
- A YouTube channel with access to Live Control Room, plus its stream URL and stream key.
OBS’s standard Media Source is for a single file and has a Loop option. For multiple files with optional shuffle, use VLC Video. OBS documents these source types in its Media Sources guide and explains how sources are assembled in scenes in its Sources Guide.

Set up a shuffled, looping playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. Open OBS and create or select the scene that should carry the broadcast video.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the scene’s Sources dock, add VLC Video, then add your local video files to its playlist.
- Set the playlist behavior. Open the source properties and turn on Shuffle Playlist to randomize playback order. Turn on Loop Playlist if you want playback to restart after the final file. OBS documents Shuffle as off by default and Loop as on by default, so verify both settings rather than assuming their current state.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key authorizes YouTube to accept it. Treat the stream key like a password and do not share it.
- Preview and test. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live. Test representative audio and motion, verify that the event is reachable, and monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast.
OBS’s documentation identifies the controls as Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist; it does not specify the shuffle algorithm or promise a fresh shuffle on every restart. Control placement or behavior may differ across installed versions and operating systems, so verify the result in your build. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance, live stream settings help, and live streaming tips for the YouTube-side steps and monitoring advice.
Choose the right OBS source
| Need | OBS source | Control | Dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local video | Media Source | Loop | OBS built-in source |
| Play multiple local files in list order, with optional shuffle or looping | VLC Video | Shuffle Playlist; Loop Playlist | VLC installed |
Rights and broadcast checks
Having a file does not establish that you have permission to rebroadcast its video or audio. Confirm that you hold the necessary rights or authorization for every item in the playlist before streaming it. Also test the files and preview the broadcast in advance; the software documentation describes controls, not the rights status of your content or the behavior of every file and version.
