How to Create a Static-Image Video for a 24/7 YouTube Radio Stream

A practical guide to sending radio audio with a still image to YouTube Live, testing the encoder, and planning for the archive limits of long broadcasts.

You can make a YouTube radio livestream with one still image by sending an audio-and-video feed from an encoder: put the image on the video track, route the radio audio into the encoder, then connect it to YouTube Live Control Room using the stream URL and key. The image supplies the visual; the audio is the broadcast. The main planning catch is that YouTube may not capture a stream that runs longer than 12 hours, so a single uninterrupted 24/7 session is not a dependable way to create a complete archive.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • An encoder running on a computer, with a way to provide the radio audio. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
  • A still image you have permission to use, plus audio you have permission to broadcast and archive.
  • An internet connection with enough steady upload capacity for the configured stream, and a local recording if you need your own archive.

YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Having a radio feed or artwork available does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Confirm the relevant rights before going live.

Set up the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current workflow.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
  3. In the encoder, create a scene or layout with the still image as the video source and the radio feed as the audio source. The image needs to remain visible while the audio plays. The exact source and looping controls depend on the encoder and the way your radio audio is supplied; check that encoder’s current documentation rather than assuming a particular interface or setting.
  4. Set the encoder to send the configured audio and video feed to YouTube. Start the encoder first; where the workflow presents a preview, check it in Live Control Room, then press Go live when you are ready for viewers.

For OBS, the official OBS Help Portal is the place to check current instructions for adding image and audio sources. The source setup varies with the audio source and OBS version, so verify that the meter responds to the intended radio audio and that the image appears in the output before starting.

Choose stable encoder settings

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution recommendations rather than applying one bitrate to every resolution or codec. YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its advanced recommendations list stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.

  • Resolution and video bitrate: Pick the resolution you intend to send, then use the matching resolution- and codec-specific value in YouTube’s current table. A still image does not remove the need to send a video signal.
  • Upload capacity: Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain continuously. Run a speed test, but do not treat a single result as proof of long-term stability.
  • Test the real signal: Before the broadcast, test the final configuration with the actual audio path and a representative stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement comparable to the real broadcast; for a static-image radio stream, verify the real audio path and output configuration rather than adding movement to the final program.
  • Monitor stream health: Watch Live Control Room’s stream-health information during the broadcast and respond to warnings. YouTube’s guidance is to test before starting and monitor the stream.

Plan for a true 24/7 schedule, archives, and DVR

A continuous 24/7 feed and a saved 24-hour archive are different outcomes. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If having a replay matters, record locally and consider dividing the schedule into shorter sessions; that is a planning response to YouTube’s archive limit, not a stated platform requirement. After each session, verify that the archive is available. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

DVR is separate from the saved archive. It lets live viewers pause and rewind during a broadcast, but YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before the live stream began. Check YouTube’s DVR guidance if viewer rewind is important.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • YouTube does not show a preview: Check that the encoder is running, the stream URL and key are copied correctly, and the encoder is actually sending its output. Keep the key private; if you suspect it was exposed, replace it and update the encoder.
  • The image appears but the radio is silent: Confirm the intended audio source is selected and active, its level meter responds, and the stream output includes that audio. Check the audio at the receiving preview before going live.
  • The stream health shows problems or the broadcast drops: Recheck whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate, use the matching current YouTube encoder settings, and run another preflight test. Monitor health during the event rather than relying only on a test at startup.
  • The full 24-hour replay is missing: YouTube does not guarantee capture of streams longer than 12 hours. Use a local recording and plan shorter sessions if complete archives are essential.
  • Viewers cannot rewind far back: Long-stream DVR can be limited or unavailable, independently of whether YouTube later creates an archive.
