To put callers on a live stream, choose between a hosted call-in workflow—where viewers request to join and a host screens them—or routing a separate VoIP call into your streaming studio with an audio mixer. The first is simpler when your audience can watch inside the platform that supports call-ins; the second can suit callers using a separate app but takes more audio setup. Neither route is automatically a public telephone hotline.

Choose how callers will join

Decision Hosted in-platform call-in VoIP plus mixer routing
How a caller joins They request entry from the platform’s audience experience. They use a separate VoIP service; its audio is routed into the studio.
Host control Riverside documents reviewing requests, accepting or declining them, and removing admitted callers. Depends on the calling app and routing setup. StreamYard’s guide describes audio routing, not a universal screening queue.
Audience reach Riverside’s built-in request does not work for people watching only on an external destination such as YouTube, LinkedIn, or Facebook. A separate VoIP intake may fit an audience that prefers that app. The cited guide does not establish that a public phone number or phone-network bridge is included.
Setup Fewer routing components if viewers already use Riverside’s audience experience. Requires a VoIP app and a physical or virtual mixer.
Compatibility Riverside call-in requests require desktop Chrome or Edge. Depends on the VoIP service, operating system, and audio-routing configuration.

This comparison describes documented workflows, not a hands-on product test. Riverside’s feature names and compatibility can change; check its current help pages before you schedule a show.

Use a hosted request-and-admit workflow

Riverside’s live call-in workflow lets an audience member request to join a Riverside live recording or webinar. A host or producer can review the requester’s name and message, then accept or decline. Admitted callers are seen and heard by the studio and live audience, and they are recorded. Callers can control their camera and microphone and leave; a host or producer can remove them. See Riverside’s live call-in overview and request-management instructions.

Route a separate VoIP call

StreamYard’s guide describes using a VoIP service such as Skype or WhatsApp and a virtual or physical mixer to bring the caller’s audio into the studio. It gives Loopback for Mac and Voicemeeter for Windows as examples, not universal operating-system requirements. Follow the audio-device instructions for the specific VoIP app, mixer, and studio you choose; don’t assume a caller’s audio will reach the stream just because the call itself works. The guide does not establish a public dial-in number or a PSTN bridge. See StreamYard’s call-in setup guide.

Plan the audience path and caller queue

Send viewers to the place where requests work

If you use Riverside’s built-in call-in, direct viewers to the Riverside audience experience—not just to a simulcast on YouTube, LinkedIn, or Facebook. Riverside says its public audience link can let non-registered viewers watch, chat, and request to join. Its help page states capacity for up to 100 non-registered audience members watching in real time; treat that as a platform-stated capacity for that experience, not a guarantee for every plan or configuration. Details are in Riverside’s audience invitation instructions.

Viewing and requesting to join do not have the same compatibility requirements. Riverside lists additional ways to watch, but call-in requests require a computer using Chrome or Edge. Ask would-be callers to check that requirement before the show; see Riverside’s audience-member instructions.

Set expectations before the first call

  • Tell viewers how to request a turn and where to send the request.
  • Say whether you will accept video callers or audio-only callers. If using a tool that does not offer an audio-only path, explain what the caller needs to do with their camera.
  • Assign a host or producer to review requests and keep the queue moving. Riverside allows multiple requests and more than one admitted caller at a time; a clear turn-taking rule can help prevent people speaking over one another.
  • Tell callers plainly when they are on air and being recorded. This is an operational fact of Riverside’s admitted-call workflow; it is not legal advice about consent requirements.

Connect and monitor the audio

For VoIP and mixer routing

  1. Choose the call app and routing method. Decide whether you will use a virtual mixer or physical mixer. StreamYard’s examples are Loopback on Mac and Voicemeeter on Windows; compatibility depends on your own apps and configuration.
  2. Set the caller’s audio output. In the calling app, select the output device that feeds the mixer. In the mixer, route that input to the streaming studio’s microphone or audio input. The exact device names and controls vary by software and operating system; use their current setup instructions.
  3. Set the studio input. Select the mixer’s output as the studio audio input. Keep the host microphone on its intended input rather than accidentally routing it through the caller channel twice.
  4. Monitor with headphones or earbuds. StreamYard recommends them for guests to help prevent echo. Speakers can send the stream or caller audio back into a microphone.
  5. Rehearse the complete path privately. With a second person or device, check that the host can hear the caller, the caller can hear the host as intended, the stream receives both voices, mute controls behave as expected, and the levels are usable. This is a practical checklist, not a measured performance claim; the cited setup guides do not specify universal latency, bandwidth, or audio-quality targets.

For a hosted audience call-in

  1. Open the Riverside studio for the live recording or webinar. Share the relevant audience link with viewers so they enter the experience where requests are available.
  2. Watch the request queue. A host or producer reviews the requester’s name and message before deciding whether to accept or decline.
  3. Admit callers deliberately. Once admitted, a caller is live and recorded. Establish who speaks first and how the host will end a turn.
  4. Manage the live conversation. Callers can control their camera and microphone or leave. The host or producer can remove someone if needed.

Include viewers who do not call

Chat gives people a way to take part without joining the studio. Riverside documents chat aggregation for supported live-stream destinations; the host can reply to or highlight viewers’ messages. Its documentation also says that disabling live-stream chat disables audience Q&A. Check Riverside’s live-streaming overview and chat and audience Q&A instructions for the current supported destinations and settings.

Check YouTube eligibility before scheduling

If YouTube is one of your destinations, its help page says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; the minimum age to live stream is 16. These are YouTube’s stated eligibility requirements, not a guarantee that a particular event or account will be approved. Re-check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements before launch, since platform rules can change.

Common problems and fixes

  • A YouTube-only viewer cannot request to join through Riverside. Riverside’s built-in call-in is for its own audience experience. Share the Riverside audience link, or choose the separate VoIP route instead.
  • A caller can watch but cannot request entry. Check that they are using desktop Chrome or Edge for the request, and that they are in the Riverside audience experience rather than only watching an external stream.
  • The VoIP caller is audible in the call but not in the stream. Check the calling app’s output device, mixer input and routing, and the studio’s selected audio input. Rehearse the whole route before going live.
  • The caller hears an echo. Have the caller and host use headphones or earbuds, then check whether speaker audio is feeding back into a microphone or whether an audio source is routed twice.
  • People speak over one another or calls interrupt the program. Assign a producer to screen requests, admit callers one at a time when appropriate, and explain the turn-taking rule before accepting a request.
  • YouTube will not let the channel start a live stream. Verify the channel and check for restrictions in the previous 90 days and the minimum-age rule in YouTube’s current eligibility guidance.
