How to Create a Backup Playlist for a 24/7 Recorded Lesson Stream

Use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source and Loop Playlist setting to play recorded lessons continuously on YouTube—and learn what you need for a real backup stream and a reliable archive.

To keep recorded lessons playing continuously on YouTube, create a playlist in OBS Studio with a VLC Video Source, turn on Loop Playlist, and test the transition from the last lesson back to the first. That is a playback loop—not a backup broadcast. If the computer, OBS, internet connection, or YouTube stream fails, the playlist cannot take over; that requires a separate, tested recovery setup.

What “backup playlist” means—and what it cannot do

The phrase can mean either a playlist that moves from one recorded lesson to the next and starts over at the end, or an independent recovery path if the broadcast stops. An OBS playlist provides the first kind of continuity. It does not add another encoder, internet connection, or destination.

A true failover setup uses an independent encoder or playout system and a tested switchover. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network, then verifying that the player rolls to the backup encoder. Do not assume this means zero downtime. YouTube’s live streaming tips describe operational guidance for streaming and failover.

Build a looping lesson playlist in OBS

  1. Prepare the lesson files. Make sure every video is stored locally on the computer that will run OBS, and decide the intended playback order. Keep a separate copy of important source files: an OBS playlist references media for playback; it is not a file backup.
  2. Install VLC if needed. OBS’s VLC Video Source depends on VLC being installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies that VLC must also be 64-bit.
  3. Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source and populate its playlist with the lesson files. OBS describes this source as a way to play multiple media items, similar to an image slideshow. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
  4. Set the order and repeat behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed curriculum sequence. Turn on Loop Playlist to restart playback when the source runs out of media files. OBS describes this control as: “Specifies whether the source should restart when it has run out of media files”.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, obtain the stream server URL and stream key, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen, share it, or include it in public screenshots.
  6. Preview and test before going live. Check the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Watch a complete transition between two lessons and, if practical, the end of the playlist returning to its start. Check video framing, audio levels, and that each file loads as expected. YouTube recommends setting up encoder streams ahead of time, checking the preview, verifying viewer access, and monitoring audio and video while streaming. See YouTube live streaming tips.
  7. Monitor the broadcast. Keep an eye on the stream while it is running. If you are recording a local archive at the same time, confirm that the recording starts and that the resulting file is valid.

For one lesson that should repeat

If you only need to replay a single file, use OBS’s Media Source and enable its Loop setting. Use VLC Video Source when you need a multi-file sequence. The OBS documentation describes these source types; it does not establish that an OBS media playlist can directly play a YouTube-hosted playlist URL.

Check YouTube eligibility and lesson rights

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to livestream. The 90-day period is an eligibility condition stated by YouTube Help, not a guarantee that any particular stream will be approved. Check the channel’s current status and stream settings in YouTube Studio before scheduling; YouTube live streaming tips provide the platform’s guidance.

Clear the rights for everything in the broadcast: lesson footage, images, music beds, and other audio or visual material. Owning the video file alone does not establish that you may livestream all its contents. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say that creators represent and warrant that they have the necessary rights to exploit live content worldwide, including music licensing rights.

Protect a durable archive of the lessons

A continuous 24/7 stream is not a dependable way to preserve a complete replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. The 12-hour figure is an operational threshold in YouTube Help, not a promise that every shorter stream will archive successfully. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as backup. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

If you need a durable lesson archive, record locally and verify the recording, or publish the individual lesson files separately where appropriate. The local recording protects against an incomplete platform archive; it does not make the live broadcast itself redundant.

Choose local OBS or cloud playlist playback

Decision Local OBS playlist Cloud playlist playout
Where playback runs Your computer runs OBS and reads the lesson files. The provider’s infrastructure runs playback, according to the provider’s description.
What you depend on Local files, powered computer, OBS, VLC for a VLC source, and an upload connection. Uploaded media, the configured destination, and the provider service.
Operational control Direct access to OBS scenes and local files. The provider’s dashboard and supported playlist controls.
Continuity to check Plan what happens if the computer or local network fails; test any separate encoder failover. Check documented recovery behavior, limits, and incident support.
Cost and limits Account for any existing hardware and software, electricity, and bandwidth. Check current storage, stream-hour, simultaneous-stream, and subscription limits before choosing.

Cloud playout is a different operating model, not proof of a redundant broadcast. For example, Looping Stream’s product page describes cloud playback for YouTube or compatible RTMP destinations and names education and training as use cases. Those are vendor-described capabilities; compare current controls, limits, pricing, compatibility, support, and recovery terms before relying on any provider.
