Use OBS Studio to mix the music, background and live waveform, then send that scene to YouTube Live Control Room with your stream key. The waveform is an OBS visualizer listening to your program audio; YouTube does not add it automatically. A genuinely continuous broadcast also needs someone—or a service—to monitor and recover it: YouTube’s automatic archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours, not necessarily a single 24-hour session.
Before you build the stream
Confirm that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. YouTube allows up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 per stream key. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Clear the music and visuals
Use music you own or have explicit rights to broadcast and rebroadcast, and use an original, licensed or otherwise cleared background image or video. A consumer music subscription does not by itself establish livestream or rebroadcast rights. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination. For licensed third-party music, YouTube says the rights holder should add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. Build the radio scene in OBS
Prepare your media and layout
- Install OBS Studio from the OBS project. OBS is free and open source, with scenes, sources, audio filters, plugins and scripts.
- Create a scene and add your music as an audio source. Add a still background or a looped video, then add any channel name, program title or other branding as text.
- Install the OBS resource Waveform and add its visualizer source to the scene. The resource offers waveform, frequency-spectrum graphs and meters. Direct the visualizer to the same OBS audio source carrying the music; otherwise it may show no response or react to the wrong sound.
- Place and size the visualizer so it is visible without obscuring titles or important artwork. A still background is enough for an audio-reactive waveform; moving background footage is optional.
The Waveform listing accessed in 2026 specifies Windows, macOS and Linux support and OBS 27.0.0 as its minimum version. Plugin compatibility can change, so check the current listing for supported systems and OBS versions before installing.

Set audio and video output for your connection
In OBS, open Settings → Output and choose a constant bitrate (CBR) video encoder configuration that your upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a keyframe interval of two seconds, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. The recommended video bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate and codec:

These are YouTube’s published ingestion recommendations, accessed in 2026—not a guarantee of the upload speed or quality available to your particular connection. Pick a resolution, frame rate and bitrate that remain stable on your actual upstream connection; a music stream with a mostly still image may not need 60 fps. Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream or schedule one, then open its Stream tab.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the matching fields in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room and select Go live there.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream health. Confirm that the music is audible, the waveform responds to it, the visual layout is legible and the connection remains stable.
YouTube advises testing with representative audio and video movement before starting: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Run that test with the same music source, visualizer and output settings you plan to use.
Plan for 24/7 continuity and archiving
OBS can keep sending the scene only while the computer, OBS process and internet connection are available. A 24/7 schedule therefore needs an operator or recovery arrangement for power loss, software crashes, network outages and YouTube interruptions. Monitor stream health and decide who will notice a failure and restart the broadcast.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour session will produce a complete archive. If an archive matters, plan around the documented limit rather than assuming the full day will be saved, and check current YouTube Studio rules before relying on a particular workflow.
YouTube’s encoder guidance also names dedicated hardware encoders and Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. Their inclusion establishes that these options exist, not that a particular one meets your music, visualizer, rights or recovery needs. Verify current terms and capabilities before choosing. No single approach is best for every channel: OBS offers scene and plugin control but depends on your local setup; hardware or cloud options shift some operational work away from a desktop.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The waveform is flat or reacts to the wrong sound: check that the Waveform source is listening to the OBS source carrying the program music, and confirm that source’s audio meter is moving.
- The preview has no sound: inspect the music source, its mute state and audio routing in OBS, then run another test and check the YouTube preview before going live.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder: confirm that OBS has the current server URL and stream key from the correct Studio stream. If the key was exposed, reset it and update OBS.
- The stream drops or health deteriorates: check the upload connection and whether the chosen output settings are sustainable. Reduce the output demand if needed, then test again with representative audio and movement.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast over content: review the rights for the music and visuals. If third-party licensed music is involved, ask the rights holder about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent automated interruption.
- The full-day recording is missing or incomplete: a single 24-hour stream is beyond YouTube’s cited under-12-hour automatic archive rule. Do not assume that a longer session will be archived in full.
