You can run a continuous YouTube walkthrough stream with an encoder on a PC or, for eligible creators, a console’s direct livestream feature. Before leaving it on, confirm your channel can livestream, test the full setup, plan local recording, and check the game publisher’s rules—YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Choose how to send gameplay to YouTube
The right route depends on where the game runs and how much control you need over the broadcast. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming and direct livestreaming from modern consoles; neither is a universal best choice. Check your console maker’s instructions for its direct-streaming steps.

YouTube’s gaming guidance also names a microphone and headphones as typical equipment, not universal requirements. A capture card is an optional accessory when the gameplay source is separate from the computer running the encoder.
Check that your channel can livestream
YouTube’s current general eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable livestreaming well before your planned start rather than at the last minute. The general guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. Set up an encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Use the Live Control Room to configure the event and access its connection details.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. YouTube describes the key as the address and password that let the encoder send the feed. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots, overlays, or a public post. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Choose the ingest protocol and encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Match the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to your output and stable upload capacity; see the settings section below.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the picture and sound are present before making the event public or leaving it unattended.
- Check the viewer-facing event. Confirm the stream is reachable from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.
YouTube’s official encoder setup guide explains the connection workflow. Keep the stream key private even when asking someone to troubleshoot: share settings and error messages, not the key itself.
Choose settings for your footage and connection
There is no single bitrate that fits every resolution, frame rate, codec, or internet connection. Measure your available upload capacity, leave headroom for fluctuations, and select the bitrate from YouTube’s current guidance for the resolution and ingest method you plan to use.

- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streams.
- Video codec: YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Availability depends on the encoder and ingest configuration.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. Use a rate your source and upload connection can sustain reliably.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate encoding where supported by your encoder and the selected YouTube settings.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and bitrate: Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the target you choose. Do not copy one bitrate as a universal setting.
HLS is an alternative ingest option for some format and HDR/codec needs, rather than a necessary upgrade for most walkthroughs. YouTube documents higher latency than RTMP because HLS sends video in segments. Its requirements include 1–4-second segments in TS format and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Use HLS only if your workflow needs it and your encoder meets YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.
Test the complete stream before a long run
Make a short unlisted test with representative gameplay motion and sound. A static menu does not reveal the same encoding, audio, or upload problems as a busy action sequence. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder in advance, checking the Live Control Room preview, verifying the local archive file, checking the event on channel/watch pages and mobile, and monitoring audio and video.

- Listen for game audio, microphone levels if used, distortion, and unexpected silence.
- Confirm the local recording file exists and is growing; check available storage for the planned recording.
- Open the event as a viewer on another device to check playback and sound.
- Check stream health in YouTube Studio and resolve warnings before scheduling continuous operation.

Plan for archives, recording, and interruptions
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be archived. If preserving the full walkthrough matters, configure a local recording and enough storage, then confirm the file is growing during the broadcast. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; its archive guidance explains the 12-hour caveat.

Do not treat splitting a continuous broadcast into shorter events as a guaranteed way to preserve every archive: YouTube’s published guidance does not establish that guarantee. Check recording storage and stream health during the run, and have a plan to restart the encoder or console stream if the connection fails. For a long unattended broadcast, test what happens after a network interruption before relying on the setup.

Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and live-streaming policy and eligibility guidance. If you cannot verify the rights to in-game music, disable or replace that music where the game allows it rather than assuming it is permitted.
Common problems and fixes
- Live streaming is unavailable: Verify the channel, check for a restriction in the preceding 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- YouTube receives no signal: Confirm the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key match the current event. Keep the key private; replace it if exposed.
- Video stutters or drops frames: Check encoder load and upload capacity. Lower the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the system and connection can sustain, then test again.
- Picture looks blocky during action: Test a higher bitrate only if upload headroom and encoder capacity allow it; otherwise reduce resolution or frame rate. Consult YouTube’s settings for the chosen output rather than applying a fixed bitrate to every stream.
- Audio is missing or distorted: Check the encoder’s selected audio source, game volume, microphone input if used, and the preview playback. Repeat the test with the same game audio settings planned for the long run.
- Archive is missing or incomplete: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured. Check the local recording, if configured, and do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only copy.
- Stream stops after a drop: Check the internet connection and whether the encoder or console resumed sending. Test recovery behavior ahead of time and monitor stream health during the broadcast.
