Use OBS Media Source for one repeating audio file or VLC Video for a playlist. Test the full setup before relying on it: a single encoder feed must keep running, and YouTube may not archive a stream that lasts more than 12 hours.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- OBS Studio installed on a computer that can remain powered on and connected to the internet throughout the broadcast.
- A static image file and either one audio file or several files for a playlist.
- Permission to broadcast every audio recording and composition in the intended live-stream territories. Owning or downloading a file does not by itself grant live-streaming rights.
OBS sends the assembled picture and sound to YouTube as an encoder feed. If OBS or the computer stops sending that feed, the stream cannot remain live through this method.
Build the image-and-audio scene in OBS
Add the static image
- Open OBS Studio and create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select +, choose Image, and add the image file. Adjust its fit or placement in the preview so it fills the intended video frame.
Choose how the audio repeats
OBS supports common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Choose the source that matches your material:
- One file: Add a Media Source, select the local audio file, and enable Loop. This repeats that file.
- Several files: Add VLC Video, load the local files as a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so OBS can use the VLC source.
Play the scene and check that the image is visible and the audio meter responds. Listen for clean transitions and confirm the desired loop behavior before going live.

Connect OBS to YouTube and start the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select the appropriate service and enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Apply the settings, then select Start Streaming in OBS.
- Return to the Live Control Room and inspect the preview. Confirm both the image and audio are present, then verify stream health before sharing the live link.
YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring stream quality. Do not assume that a successful first connection proves the broadcast will continue without interruption.
Set encoder options for a stable feed
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance specifies H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The right bitrate varies with resolution and frame rate; choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, then test it under the conditions in which the stream will run.

- Use the resolution and frame rate appropriate for the still image and your available upload capacity; a static image does not eliminate the need to send a continuous video feed.
- Keep the keyframe interval at two seconds where possible, and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second limit.
- Use constant bitrate encoding and H.264 video, with AAC or MP3 audio.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room during a test for warnings or unstable stream health. If the feed stutters or drops, lower the bitrate or output demands and test again.
YouTube’s documentation describes software encoders such as OBS and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. It does not prescribe a particular computer or require a new dedicated machine. The practical choice is operational: use a setup you can keep powered, connected, monitored, and recover when something interrupts it.
Plan for interruptions and YouTube archives
Keep the encoder operating
A computer-based OBS stream depends on the computer, OBS, power, and internet connection continuing to work. Monitor the Live Control Room and have a plan for restarting the encoder if the connection or software fails. YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 uptime from one broadcast.

Do not rely on YouTube for a complete 24-hour replay
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. For a continuous 24/7 broadcast, do not promise a complete YouTube replay; keep a local recording if retaining the full program matters.
Clear the music and content rights first
YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to hold all necessary rights for live content, including music rights involving artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Check that the permissions cover live streaming and the territories where you intend to broadcast. The stream must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A playlist that plays successfully in OBS can still be unsuitable to broadcast if its rights or policy status are not clear.
