The main operational risks are losing the stream when local equipment or internet fails, rights enforcement on music, and assuming YouTube will save a single 24/7 broadcast: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Choose the kind of 24/7 stream you need
Start by deciding what viewers will see and hear. The right setup depends on whether the program is genuinely live or can be assembled from recordings.
- Live camera and audio: Send the gurdwara’s current camera and mixer or audio feed through streaming software or a hardware encoder. Someone needs to keep watch over the source and broadcast.
- Prerecorded program: Loop recordings that the gurdwara has permission to use. A computer encoder can play local media, or a managed cloud service can loop uploaded videos.
- Static visual with audio: Pair an approved image with authorized kirtan audio. A dedicated hardware encoder is not required just to loop a simple prerecorded program.
YouTube supports software and hardware encoder workflows, but it does not prescribe one architecture for a gurdwara’s continuous stream. Consider the actual camera, mixer, and audio signal chain before choosing equipment.
Prepare the YouTube channel and stream
- Confirm channel access. Make sure the gurdwara controls the channel and that an administrator can open YouTube Studio.
- Enable live streaming and verify the channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions.
- Create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key as a password: share it only with authorized operators and replace it if it is exposed.
- Check the incoming preview. For a scheduled event, confirm that the picture and sound are arriving correctly in Studio before starting the broadcast.
Configure and test the encoder
Use a bitrate the gurdwara’s upload connection can sustain steadily, rather than choosing settings solely for maximum resolution. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations are 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. For a mostly static, audio-led program, 720p30 is a sensible starting point to test, not a universal requirement. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and recommended bitrates for the current specifications.

- Set the encoder to the resolution and frame rate you plan to use, then select the corresponding bitrate.
- Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to two seconds.
- Run a test using representative sound and movement—not just a silent desktop or still image.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback and listen for clear, continuous audio. Confirm that the video is stable and that no part of the service is clipping or dropping out.
- Test recovery procedures: who can restart the encoder, restore the source, or create a fresh broadcast if the stream ends?
A test is only useful if it exercises the actual source, network, and people who will operate the service. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; the settings above do not guarantee stability on a particular connection or encoder.
Choose an operating path

Religious or traditional subject matter does not automatically clear a particular performance or recording for a YouTube broadcast. Confirm permissions for the recording actually sent to YouTube, the people performing, any protected arrangement, and other third-party material. The rights status of a specific Shabad or recording can depend on the material and jurisdiction.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can trigger a warning, replace the live image with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Even if the gurdwara has a license, YouTube says a rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist to prevent interruptions. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also result in termination. Review YouTube’s guidance on live streams and copyright.
YouTube’s terms place responsibility on the content provider to secure the necessary rights for live and archived content, including music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Plan for continuity and replay separately
A 24/7 broadcast and a reliable archive are different goals. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If viewers need replayable daily programs, end each broadcast before the 12-hour threshold, start a new one, and keep a local recording as a backup. YouTube recommends a local recording backup for this reason. Read YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
For an ongoing stream, assign a person or team to check live status, picture, sound, and connection. Document who has channel access, where the stream key is stored, how to restart the encoder, and what to do if a rights warning appears. A cloud loop can reduce dependence on an always-on computer at the gurdwara, but it does not remove the need for rights clearance or a considered archive plan.
