To stream podcast episodes through FFmpeg to YouTube Live, first convert or verify each episode as AAC or MP3, then configure FFmpeg to send audio plus a video stream over RTMPS. YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo audio. A playlist requires more care than a single-file conversion: file compatibility and looping behavior can vary, so test your actual episode sequence in YouTube Live before relying on it.

What you need to prepare

  • FFmpeg: Install a build that includes an AAC encoder if you plan to output AAC. Run ffmpeg -encoders to see which encoders your installed build enables.
  • Podcast episodes: Put the files you plan to stream in a known order. Check that they have audio tracks and note their formats and durations.
  • A video layer: YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder setup includes a video codec as well as audio. An audio-led podcast therefore needs a visual/video stream, for example a static visual encoded as video.
  • YouTube Live stream details: In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Treat the stream key as a credential; do not publish it or include it in a shared script.

FFmpeg reads inputs, applies options and filters, and writes outputs; changing a file’s extension alone does not convert its codec. Its general command pattern is ffmpeg [global options] {[input options] -i input} ... {[output options] output}. Options placed before an input apply to that input; output options apply to the output.

Convert an episode to a YouTube-compatible audio file

YouTube lists AAC and MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo, it recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that every source or encoder command will work without a stream test.

Example: transcode one source file to AAC

For a source file named episode.wav, this example writes stereo AAC audio in an M4A container at the recommended sample rate and bitrate:

ffmpeg -i episode.wav -vn -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 episode.m4a

-i names the input, -vn excludes video from the converted audio file, -c:a aac selects FFmpeg’s AAC encoder, -b:a 128k sets the audio bitrate, and -ar 44100 -ac 2 requests 44.1 kHz stereo. The output extension matches the M4A container. AAC encoder availability depends on the FFmpeg build; if this command reports an unavailable encoder, check ffmpeg -encoders or use a build with AAC encoding enabled.

When conversion is unnecessary

If an episode already contains AAC or MP3 audio with suitable channel and sample-rate settings, you may not need to transcode it. Verify the actual streams and test them in your intended workflow. YouTube also accepts MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; the guidance reviewed does not establish that AAC is universally better.

Build and test the episode playlist

There is no single playlist-and-loop command that can be assumed to work for every collection of podcast files. Concatenation and looping depend on factors such as matching codecs, stream layouts, timestamps and containers, as well as the installed FFmpeg build. Avoid treating a concat list or input-loop option as universally reliable for mixed episode files.

Make the files compatible before combining them

  • Use a consistent audio codec, sample rate and channel layout across the episodes where possible.
  • Check whether each file contains only audio or also includes video, and decide how your chosen workflow will handle those streams.
  • Keep the intended episode order explicit. Test transitions between files, including the end of one episode and the beginning of the next.
  • Try a short run with the actual files and your installed FFmpeg build before scheduling a longer broadcast. Confirm both that playback advances and that the sequence behaves as intended when it reaches the end.

FFmpeg’s general input/output model supports many formats, but it does not make arbitrary files interchangeable. If a playlist transition fails or produces silence, gaps or timestamp errors, normalize the files to compatible formats and retest rather than assuming the stream settings alone will fix the issue.

Configure the YouTube Live output

For a basic FFmpeg workflow, focus on RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents AAC or MP3 audio, alongside H.264, H.265 or AV1 video codecs, for its RTMP/RTMPS encoder setup. Since that setup includes video, an audio-only input needs a video layer such as a still-image visual encoded as video. The exact FFmpeg command depends on how you provide that visual and how your playlist is assembled; the official guidance cited here does not establish one universal command for combining and infinitely looping arbitrary podcast episodes.

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and select or create the live stream. Copy the RTMPS server address and stream key shown for that stream.
  2. Set the output for the selected ingest protocol. Use RTMPS, configure the output audio as AAC or MP3, and select a supported video codec for the visual layer. Use 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo audio as YouTube’s recommended settings.
  3. Keep the key private. Pass it to FFmpeg using the RTMPS destination format expected by your encoder setup, but avoid committing it to public source code or logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room.
  4. Start a short test transmission. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event. For a podcast stream, check that the audio is audible, the video layer is present and the episode sequence advances as expected.
  5. Monitor stream health in Live Control Room. Do not schedule the full broadcast until YouTube is receiving a stable stream and the test confirms the playlist behavior you need.

RTMP/RTMPS versus HLS

HLS is a separate YouTube ingest route, not a drop-in change to an RTMP output command. It brings packaging and request requirements that a basic RTMPS workflow does not use.

Ingest route What the setup entails Audio guidance Latency
RTMP/RTMPS Encoder sends a live stream; YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its documented setup includes a video codec. AAC or MP3; recommended stereo settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. YouTube identifies HLS as higher latency than RTMP; no specific RTMP latency figure is stated here.
HLS Requires TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, no byte ranges, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no encryption other than HTTPS. AAC, AC3 or EAC3; recommended stereo settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Higher than RTMP, according to YouTube Help.

Choose HLS only if you are deliberately implementing that packaging and delivery method. Its segment and playlist rules should not be mixed into an RTMPS command.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg reports that the AAC encoder is unavailable: The installed build may not include it. Check ffmpeg -encoders and use an enabled audio encoder compatible with your chosen output.
  • YouTube receives video but no sound: Confirm that the input has an audio stream, that FFmpeg maps or encodes it as intended, and that the output uses AAC or MP3. Check the audio during a short test in Live Control Room.
  • YouTube does not receive a usable video stream: The documented RTMP/RTMPS setup includes a video codec. Add and encode a visual layer, and check that the selected video codec is supported.
  • The stream stops or errors when the next episode begins: The files may differ in codec, layout, timestamps or container. Convert them to a consistent format, test the transition and revise the playlist workflow for your specific files.
  • The stream key is rejected: Recopy the key and server information for the active YouTube Live stream, check that the destination uses the right ingest protocol, and replace the key if it may have been exposed.
  • The stream works locally but not in YouTube: Confirm the RTMPS destination and supported audio/video codecs, then inspect stream health in Live Control Room during a fresh test. A successful local decode alone does not validate the YouTube ingest.
  • HLS segments fail to ingest: Check the HLS-specific TS segment, rolling-playlist, HTTPS request and encryption requirements; RTMP settings do not satisfy them automatically.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Having the technical ability to loop episodes does not establish that you have permission to rebroadcast their content. Before streaming, confirm that you control the rights to the podcast audio, music, artwork and any other included material, or have permission covering this use. YouTube may apply its copyright and monetization policies to live streams and reused material; technical compatibility is not a policy clearance. Review YouTube’s current requirements for your channel and content before scheduling a continuous broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded recordings and playlists: upload the episodes, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
