For an OBS loop stream, first test the original file in OBS Media Source, which supports MOV and MP4 and includes a Loop setting. Convert to MP4 only if the file does not work in your chosen software or you need an MP4 copy for another part of your workflow.
Does YouTube accept iPhone MOV files?
Yes. YouTube lists .MOV as a supported video upload format, so changing the container to MP4 is not inherently required for upload compatibility. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings specify an MP4 container, H.264 video, and AAC-LC or Opus audio, and recommend encoding at the frame rate at which the video was recorded. Those are recommended encoding settings, not a rule that every MOV upload must first be converted. YouTube’s upload encoding guidance distinguishes the recommended settings from its accepted formats.
Check whether conversion is needed for your loop
Upload compatibility and playback compatibility in your streaming software are separate questions. OBS Media Source supports MOV and MP4 files, and its Loop property restarts the file when playback finishes. Try the original iPhone MOV in the software and setup you intend to use before converting it just to make a loop. OBS Media Sources documentation describes supported media and looping.
- If the original MOV plays and loops correctly, keep it; conversion is unnecessary for this workflow.
- If it fails in the intended player or OBS setup, or you need an MP4 for another step, make a converted copy.
- Keep the original file if quality or metadata matters. Conversion encodes a new file, and the result can differ from the source.
Convert an iPhone MOV to MP4 in HandBrake
- Copy the video from your iPhone to your computer using the transfer method for your operating system. Transfer steps differ by setup; consult current Apple instructions for your Mac or Windows computer rather than relying on a guessed procedure.
- Open HandBrake and select the MOV file as the source.
- Choose an MP4 preset. HandBrake’s Fast 1080p30 preset targets up to 1080p at 30 fps and uses H.264 video with AAC stereo audio. It is a compatibility-oriented option, not a way to preserve higher resolution or frame rate automatically. HandBrake’s official preset documentation lists its preset settings.
- Where practical, match the output frame rate to the rate at which the iPhone video was recorded. If the source is above 1080p or 30 fps, select settings that suit the footage instead of assuming Fast 1080p30 preserves it.
- Choose the destination and start the encode. Check the resulting MP4’s playback and audio before using it in the stream.
Loop the video in OBS
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the original MOV or the MP4 you made.
- Enable the source’s Loop property so playback starts again after the file ends.
- Preview the scene through at least one full playback cycle. Confirm the picture, audio, and restart behave as intended in your setup.
- Set up the live stream separately from the local video file. File upload encoding recommendations do not configure the live encoder.
Set the YouTube Live encoder separately
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends CBR and H.264 video. It supports up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Choose YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you are actually sending; do not assume the bitrate or settings used to encode the local MOV determine the live feed settings.
