How to Connect LibreTime Automation to a 24/7 YouTube Radio Stream

LibreTime’s scheduled audio needs an Icecast source and a separate relay/encoder to reach YouTube Live. Here’s how to plan the connection, protect continuity, and avoid archive surprises.

LibreTime’s documented outputs are Icecast and SHOUTcast, not a native YouTube Live destination. To put its automated schedule on YouTube, send LibreTime’s audio to an Icecast stream, use a separate relay/encoder to turn that source into a YouTube-compatible stream with video, then send it to YouTube Live. The relay is the bridge; the cited platform documentation does not provide or certify a single end-to-end LibreTime-to-YouTube setup.

How the connection works

The practical signal path is:

LibreTime scheduled playout → Icecast source stream → separate relay/encoder → YouTube Live

LibreTime handles the radio schedule and publishes audio to Icecast. The relay reads that audio, supplies or pairs it with a video signal, and sends the resulting stream to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. These are separate documented endpoints, not evidence of a native LibreTime-to-YouTube integration.

The relay is a separate system component. Its software, configuration, and compatibility depend on what you choose; the official platform guidance cited here does not specify a particular bridge. Treat third-party instructions or scripts as community methods, not as an officially supported LibreTime feature.

Before you begin

  • A working LibreTime installation with a schedule or playlist ready for automated playout.
  • An Icecast server and an Icecast output configured in LibreTime. Record the host, port, mount, audio format, and credentials needed by the relay.
  • A separate relay/encoder that can read the Icecast source, produce audio accepted by YouTube, provide a video stream or visual, and send to YouTube Live.
  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has not had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check the channel’s current eligibility before scheduling a launch.
  • Permission to stream the audio and any images or video used in the broadcast. A technical connection does not establish that the material is cleared for YouTube.
  • A plan to monitor and restart the relay independently of LibreTime. A healthy radio playout does not prove the separate YouTube relay is still running.

Connect LibreTime’s Icecast output to YouTube

  1. Configure the source in LibreTime. In LibreTime’s Icecast output settings, enter the Icecast server details and choose an output format supported by your server and relay. LibreTime’s configuration documentation describes up to three Icecast outputs and lists AAC, MP3, Ogg, and Opus among supported audio formats. If more than two Icecast outputs use the same Icecast server, LibreTime’s documentation says to raise the server’s source limit. The exact labels and location of settings can vary by installation.
  2. Confirm that Icecast is receiving the scheduled audio. Start or wait for scheduled playout and check the configured mount using the monitoring method provided by your Icecast server. Verify that the expected program is audible before adding YouTube to the chain. If the source is silent or the mount is unavailable, fix that first; the YouTube relay cannot repair a missing LibreTime source.
  3. Configure the relay as a separate encoder. Point it at the Icecast host, port, and mount, and provide the required authentication without exposing credentials publicly. Configure it to send YouTube-compatible audio and to include a video signal if the broadcast needs a visual. The relay software determines the exact fields and procedure; no specific relay implementation is established here.
  4. Create or select a YouTube Live stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy the server URL and stream key into the relay/encoder. Keep the key private: it is an encoder credential, and anyone who obtains it may be able to send to that stream.
  5. Use secure ingestion and compatible encoder settings. Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s encrypted extension to RTMP. For RTMP/RTMPS encoder audio, YouTube specifies AAC or MP3. Use constant bitrate encoding and set the keyframe interval to the recommended two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Choose video resolution and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the available upstream bandwidth. LibreTime’s Icecast format and the relay’s YouTube output format are separate choices: transcode in the relay if the source format is not accepted at the destination.
  6. Preview before going live. Wait for the encoder preview in the Live Control Room, then use YouTube’s Go live control when the event is ready. Check both audio and video in the preview, and continue monitoring stream health after the broadcast begins.
  7. Test recovery and recording. Test what happens when the Icecast source or relay disconnects, and confirm that the relay restarts or reconnects as intended. If a durable archive matters, make a separate local recording and confirm it is being written successfully.

Choose where to run the relay

The relay can run on the LibreTime host, on another always-on server, or on hosted compute. The sources do not establish a best option or compare particular providers; choose based on the operating needs of your installation.

Where it runs What to weigh
LibreTime host Fewer machines to manage, but relay resource use and failures share a host with radio automation.
Separate always-on server Separates relay and playout resources, but adds another machine, network path, and service to supervise.
Hosted compute Can keep the relay off a home connection, but requires checking network reliability, restart supervision, maintenance access, and recurring cost for the chosen service.

Whichever location you choose, the relay needs reliable access to the Icecast source and outbound connectivity to YouTube. Include it in monitoring and restart planning rather than assuming LibreTime’s own continuity features cover the entire chain.

Plan for the limits of a continuous YouTube event

A single uninterrupted 24/7 stream exceeds YouTube’s documented 12-hour archive threshold. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; its encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise a complete replay or full rewind for one continuous broadcast.

If you need an archive, keep an independent local recording. If you are considering ending and splitting the broadcast into shorter events, check YouTube’s current workflow and test the process before relying on it; do not assume a particular splitting method preserves every archive or rewind feature.

LibreTime’s scheduled playout can continue when show-source or master-source live input is absent, and Icecast fallback mounts can help move listeners between sources. Those mechanisms apply within the radio-source chain. They do not automatically fail over the separate YouTube relay.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
The relay cannot connect to the source Wrong host, port, mount, credentials, or an unavailable Icecast source. Check the LibreTime output settings against the relay’s source settings, then verify that Icecast is receiving the expected mount and scheduled audio.
Icecast audio works but YouTube has no signal The relay may not be sending to the right YouTube server URL, may have an incorrect key, or may be unable to reach YouTube. Recheck the selected stream’s URL and key in YouTube Studio and the relay. Keep the key private; replace it if it has been exposed.
YouTube receives video but has no audio, or rejects the audio The relay’s output audio format may not match YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder requirements. Set the relay output to AAC or MP3 audio and confirm its bitrate and audio input are configured. LibreTime’s source format alone does not establish that the relay’s destination format is compatible.
The stream is unstable or reports poor health Insufficient or variable upstream bandwidth, encoding settings, or interruptions in the source-to-relay path. Compare the selected bitrate with available upstream capacity, use constant bitrate encoding, check the keyframe interval, and monitor both the Icecast source and YouTube stream health.
YouTube goes offline when LibreTime still appears to be playing The relay is a separate failure point and may have stopped, lost its source, or failed to reconnect. Check relay status and logs, then test its restart and reconnect behavior. Configure monitoring and supervision for the relay separately from LibreTime.
The broadcast is live but there is no complete replay A continuous event exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. Keep a local recording if a durable archive is required. Check YouTube’s current event workflow before planning shorter broadcasts.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than a live feed of LibreTime’s changing schedule, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. It does not connect to a LibreTime Icecast source or mirror LibreTime automation; it plays videos you upload or arrange in a playlist. To use it, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo then loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
