To connect an IP camera directly to YouTube Live, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key, and enter them in the camera’s outbound RTMP settings. This works only if the exact camera model and firmware can publish to an RTMP server; a camera that only provides RTSP or another source feed needs an encoder between it and YouTube.
Before you rely on the setup, check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility rules, the camera’s supported video and audio formats, and its current manufacturer instructions. Menu names and capabilities vary by model.
Check requirements before you configure the camera
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the user must be at least 16 years old. Check the current eligibility details in YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
Check for outbound RTMP on the exact camera
Look for a setting that sends or publishes a stream to a custom RTMP server. RTSP viewing support, or a feature that makes the camera an RTMP server, does not by itself mean the camera can push video to YouTube. Feature availability and menus depend on the model and firmware. For example, Amcrest’s instructions and TP-Link VIGI’s instructions describe particular camera workflows; they are not universal instructions for every camera from those manufacturers. TP-Link notes its RTMP feature may require current firmware.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check network access and output compatibility
The camera must be able to reach the internet and its stream must use settings YouTube accepts. Ethernet or Power over Ethernet (PoE) can suit an installation when the camera supports it, but neither is required in every setup. Check the camera’s own limits, particularly for audio and codec choices, as they can be narrower than YouTube’s general ingest specifications.
Connect a camera that supports outbound RTMP
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select a stream. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube explains that the key identifies where the encoder should send its feed and allows YouTube to accept it in its stream key guidance.
- Open the camera’s RTMP settings. Use the camera’s web interface or management app, then find its network, live-stream, or RTMP configuration. The exact location differs. Amcrest documents Setup > Network > RTMP for its example workflow, with RTMP enabled and the URL and key entered in a custom address field. TP-Link VIGI documents separate server-address and stream-key fields. Use the manual for your precise model and firmware rather than copying another brand’s path.
- Enter the YouTube destination. Put the stream URL and key into the corresponding camera fields, or combine them only if that model’s instructions specifically call for a custom address. If the camera offers RTMPS, use it if supported by both the camera and its current instructions; YouTube recommends the encrypted protocol.
- Apply the settings and enable the camera stream. Return to YouTube’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow says to select Go live after the preview appears. Check the picture, audio, and representative camera movement before the event. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in a public screenshot or example. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and replace the saved key in the camera or encoder.
Choose compatible YouTube ingest settings
YouTube’s current encoder guide lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. The recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use the matching row in YouTube’s bitrate table for the camera’s actual output rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. The camera must support the protocol and formats you select.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension to RTMP. A camera may not offer RTMPS or every video format accepted by YouTube. For instance, TP-Link’s VIGI instructions advise H.264/H.264+ for the documented main-stream setup and note an audio compatibility limitation in that workflow. Check both the camera documentation and YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
If the camera cannot publish directly
A camera that exposes a usable RTSP feed but cannot push RTMP directly needs an encoder to receive the feed and send it to YouTube. This is a separate setup: the encoder must remain running, the camera feed must be accessible to it, and the video and audio formats must be compatible. Hanwha Vision documents an example using a camera’s RTSP feed and FFmpeg in its RTSP-to-YouTube workflow. Follow the instructions for your camera and encoder; do not treat this as direct camera RTMP publishing.

Troubleshoot common connection problems
- YouTube does not receive a preview: Confirm outbound RTMP is enabled, the camera is online, and the URL and key were copied into the correct fields. Check that the camera can reach the internet and that the key belongs to the selected YouTube stream.
- The camera has no RTMP destination field: Check the exact model and firmware documentation for outbound RTMP support. RTSP support alone is not enough; use an encoder if the camera provides a compatible feed but cannot publish directly.
- YouTube rejects or cannot decode the feed: Compare the camera’s selected protocol, codec, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current ingest guidance. Also check manufacturer-specific codec and audio restrictions.
- The picture arrives but audio does not: Check whether the camera sends audio in the selected stream and whether its audio format is supported by the camera’s YouTube workflow. A compatible video stream does not establish that the audio path is compatible.
- The stream stops after changing a credential: Update the stored key in the camera or encoder after resetting or replacing it in YouTube Live Control Room.
- The stream is unavailable before setup begins: Check channel verification, age eligibility, and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a 24/7 YouTube channel built around uploaded recordings rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo runs the playlist from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
