For a USB microphone, connect it to the PC by USB and select it as the input in your recording or calling app. For an XLR microphone, connect it with a balanced XLR cable to a microphone input on an audio interface or mixer. To get that XLR mic into a PC, connect the interface to the computer and select the interface as the app’s input. Check the microphone’s manual before switching on phantom power.
Choose the connection path that matches your microphone
| Path | What you need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| USB microphone to PC | A USB microphone and a compatible computer port and cable | A direct computer connection without a separate interface |
| XLR microphone to PC through an audio interface | A balanced XLR cable, an interface with an XLR mic input, and the interface’s computer connection | Getting an XLR mic into recording or calling software on a PC |
| XLR microphone to mixer | A balanced XLR cable and a mixer’s microphone-level input | Using the mic with a mixer; the route from that mixer to a PC depends on its model and outputs |
Some microphones offer both USB and XLR outputs. Shure’s MV7 documentation, for example, describes USB-to-computer and balanced XLR-to-mixer or stage-box paths. Use the output and instructions for your specific model rather than assuming every microphone with multiple connectors works the same way.
Connect a USB microphone to a PC
- Connect the microphone. Use the microphone’s USB cable and a compatible computer port. Shure describes the MV7’s USB connection to a computer as plug-and-play; other models may have different requirements.
- Select the input in your app. Open the audio input or microphone setting in your recording, meeting, or calling application and choose the USB microphone. The exact setting name and location depend on the application and operating system.
- Check the input meter. Speak into the mic and confirm that the app shows a signal. If it does not, check the app’s selected input and the microphone’s device-specific instructions.
Connect an XLR microphone to a PC through an audio interface
- Connect mic to interface. Use a balanced XLR microphone cable from the mic to an interface socket identified as a mic input. Do not substitute a line or instrument input just because its connector appears to fit.
- Connect the interface to the PC. Use the computer connection specified by the interface manufacturer. In Focusrite’s cited Scarlett Solo example, the interface connects to the computer over USB.
- Check phantom-power requirements. Read the microphone manual before enabling phantom power. Requirements differ: Shure says its PGA27 performs best at 48 V, while its MV7 guide says phantom power is not required for the MV7’s XLR connection.
- Select the interface in the app. Choose the interface, or the relevant input on it, in your recording or calling application. The operating-system and application menus vary.
- Set gain while monitoring. Speak or perform at the expected level and raise the interface’s hardware preamp gain while watching its meter or signal indicator. Avoid letting the signal clip. The appropriate target level depends on your recording workflow; the cited setup material does not establish one universal target.
A professional XLR microphone connected directly to a PC sound-card mic input may sound very quiet: Shure notes that the computer input can expect a hotter signal. An audio interface with a mic preamp, or a microphone with a built-in USB connection, is the documented alternative.
Connect an XLR microphone to a mixer
- Use the mixer’s mic input. Connect the microphone with a balanced XLR cable to an input labeled for a microphone, rather than an input intended for line-level equipment or an instrument.
- Check phantom power for this mic. Consult the microphone manual and the mixer manual before enabling it. A mixer or interface can supply phantom power, but that does not mean every microphone needs it.
- Set the channel gain and monitor the signal. Speak or perform while watching the mixer’s meter or signal indicator. Keep the level below clipping.
- Check the mixer’s route to the PC if needed. Mixers differ in their outputs and in whether or how they connect to a computer. Follow the documentation for the exact mixer; do not assume an XLR input alone sends audio to a PC.
Match the connector and signal level
Connector shape alone does not tell you what signal an input expects. On the cited Focusrite interface, XLR connections are for microphones, while 1/4-inch jacks serve line or instrument connections. Focusrite warns that line-level equipment connected to an XLR mic input can overload the preamp; enabling phantom power in that misuse case may damage equipment. Check the labels and manual for your specific interface or mixer.

- Use an XLR mic input for an XLR microphone.
- Use a balanced XLR microphone cable for the cited microphone-to-interface or microphone-to-mixer connection.
- Do not route line-level equipment into a mic input or turn on phantom power without checking what is connected and what its manual permits.
- Do not assume every condenser mic, dynamic mic, or hybrid mic has the same phantom-power requirement.
Troubleshoot no signal, low level, or distortion
| Symptom | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No signal in the recording or calling app | The app’s selected input, the selected interface or channel, cable connections, and whether the mic is connected to a mic input | Select the correct device and input, reseat or check the cable, and verify that the mic is on the intended mic input. |
| An XLR mic is very quiet on the PC | Whether it is plugged directly into a computer sound-card mic input | Use an audio interface with an XLR mic input, or use a microphone’s built-in USB connection if its documentation supports that path. |
| A condenser mic has no usable signal | The specific microphone’s phantom-power requirement | Check its manual and enable the required phantom power only if the mic calls for it. Requirements vary by model. |
| The signal clips or sounds overloaded | Preamp gain and whether a line-level source is connected to a mic input | Reduce gain and connect each source to an input designed for its signal level. Check the gear manual before changing phantom-power settings. |
| The mic works on the mixer but not in the PC app | The mixer’s computer connection and output routing | Consult the mixer’s model-specific documentation, then select the appropriate computer input in the app if the mixer supports that route. |
These checks follow the cited manufacturers’ setup requirements; the exact controls and recovery steps vary by microphone, interface, mixer, operating system, and application.
