Connect a chatbot to Discord by creating a Discord application, registering a slash command, and choosing one way to receive interactions: an HTTP endpoint or the Gateway. You do not need a dedicated device. The setup depends on your chatbot code and the features you want, so start with the simplest invocation method that meets your needs.
1. Create a Discord application and protect its credentials
- Open the Discord Developer Portal quick-start and create an application.
- On the app’s General Information page, note its Application ID and Public Key. The Public Key is used to verify HTTP interaction requests; the Application ID identifies the app in Discord’s API.
- If your design needs a bot user, create or configure it on the Bot page and copy its token into a protected environment variable or secret store. The token authorizes API requests and must not be shared or committed to version control.
A bot user is useful when the app needs a member-like presence in a server or Gateway access. For an application that only needs to provide application commands, the applications.commands OAuth2 scope can be used without a bot user. Discord includes that scope by default when requesting bot. Choose installation scopes and permissions to match actual features; do not request Administrator as a shortcut. See Discord’s OAuth2 guide and application command documentation.
2. Register a slash command
Application commands are registered through Discord’s HTTP API. A slash command uses the CHAT_INPUT command type. Give it a name and description, then define options for any typed inputs your chatbot needs, such as a question or topic.
- Build a command definition for your chosen language and runtime.
- Register it for a test server as a guild command. Discord says guild commands update instantly, which makes them useful while developing.
- When the command is ready for broader availability, register it globally. Global and guild registration are separate scope choices; a global command is not a replacement for testing in a guild.
Discord’s quick-start demonstrates command registration with npm run register, but Node.js is not required. Adapt the registration call to your project or use a supported community library. The command’s options become structured input for your response handler; users do not need to type a special prefix or grant the bot access to every ordinary message to invoke a slash command.

3. Choose one way to receive interactions
For a given app, select either outgoing HTTP webhooks or Gateway delivery for interactions. Discord treats these routes as mutually exclusive for receiving interactions. The right choice depends on whether you want a request/response endpoint or a persistent bot connection.

Option A: Receive interactions over HTTP
- Run an HTTPS-capable server with a route for Discord interactions. In Discord’s quick-start example, an Express server uses an
/interactionsroute. - For local development, expose the server through a tunnel and set the resulting public HTTPS address, ending in
/interactions, as the app’s Interactions Endpoint URL. - Verify Discord’s request security headers using the app’s Public Key. Do not trust interaction payloads just because they arrive at the endpoint.
- Handle Discord’s endpoint verification
PINGby returning the requiredPONGresponse, then process command interactions on the same route. - Route the command name and supplied option values to your chatbot logic, and return a valid interaction response.
The tunnel is a development convenience, not a production hosting recommendation. A deployed HTTP handler must remain reachable at the configured URL.
Option B: Receive interactions through the Gateway
- Connect a bot client to Discord’s persistent WebSocket Gateway using a suitable library or your own implementation.
- Subscribe to the Gateway event groups the app actually needs. Intents control which event groups are requested; they are not a reason to request all available data.
- Handle
INTERACTION_CREATEevents, route the command and its options to your chatbot logic, and send a valid interaction response.
A library can handle much of the Gateway connection machinery, but the app still needs an appropriate runtime and deployment that can maintain the connection.

4. Send the interaction to your chatbot logic
Keep Discord transport separate from the part that generates an answer. Once an interaction has been received and validated, pass the command name and typed option values into a handler for the chatbot. That handler can apply your own rules, call a model or other service if your design requires one, and produce a response in the format Discord expects.
Discord connectivity itself does not require an AI model or model API. The exact code, library, permission bitfield, and hosting arrangement depend on the features and technology stack you choose; Discord’s setup documentation does not prescribe one implementation for all bots.

5. Request only the access your bot needs
A slash command is an explicit way for a user to invoke an app. Reading every ordinary server message is a different design and may require message-content access. Avoid enabling message-content access or unrelated Gateway intents unless a feature truly needs them.
Discord’s June 10, 2026 announcement about server-data access says apps with 10,000 or more total users need review to retain access to certain server data, and continued access requires annual reapplication. Discord also notes that text-command apps can redesign around slash commands or apply to retain access. The threshold concerns policy review, not bot performance or user adoption. Check your Developer Portal settings and Discord’s current server-data access policy for your app before launch.

6. Test, install, and deploy
- Test the guild-scoped command and each option with valid and invalid inputs.
- For HTTP delivery, confirm the endpoint is reachable, signature verification succeeds, the
PINGcheck works, and the handler returns a valid interaction response. - For Gateway delivery, confirm the client connects, subscribes only to needed intents, and handles interaction events.
- Install the app using the OAuth2 scopes and feature permissions you selected. Test as a server member with the permissions the app will actually have.
- Before wider use, register the global command if appropriate and deploy the HTTP endpoint or Gateway client to infrastructure that suits its availability needs.
Discord’s workflow is application configuration, software, API calls, and an endpoint or Gateway connection; it does not call for a dedicated physical product.
Common setup problems
- The slash command does not appear: confirm that registration succeeded and that you are testing in the guild where the guild command was registered. Guild commands update instantly; global commands are intended for broader use.
- Discord cannot verify the HTTP endpoint: check that the configured URL is publicly reachable over HTTPS, that the route is correct, and that the handler verifies request security headers and answers the verification
PING. - Commands arrive through neither route: check that you configured the chosen interaction-delivery method and are not expecting webhook and Gateway delivery to operate together for the same app.
- The Gateway client disconnects or misses events: review its connection and heartbeat handling, reconnect behavior, and intent subscriptions.
- The bot cannot perform an action: verify the app’s installation scopes and requested permissions for that feature. Do not solve a missing specific permission by granting Administrator.
- A bot token may have been exposed: treat it as compromised, replace it through the Developer Portal, update the protected secret used by the app, and remove the exposed value from code or public logs.
