In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced and find Automatic Reconnect. Enable it, set Retry Delay as the starting wait in seconds, and set Maximum Retries as the attempt limit. OBS increases the wait after each attempt, so Retry Delay is not the interval for every retry. These settings help OBS try to reconnect; they cannot repair an unstable internet connection or guarantee that every YouTube interruption will recover.
Configure Automatic Reconnect in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings → Advanced.
- Locate Automatic Reconnect. The exact labels or layout can vary by OBS release.
- Enable automatic reconnect.
- Set Retry Delay to the initial wait, in seconds, before OBS attempts to reconnect.
- Set Maximum Retries to the number of attempts OBS should make before it stops retrying. OBS’s output API documents that a value of zero disables reconnecting.
- Select Apply or OK to save your settings. Test the stream setup before relying on it for a live broadcast; OBS recommends testing settings and stream operation in advance.
OBS’s official overview identifies Automatic Reconnect as an Advanced setting, but does not establish current default values for the controls. Do not assume a value shown in another version is the default for your installation.
What Retry Delay and Maximum Retries mean
Retry Delay is the starting wait
The delay you enter is the initial wait before a reconnect attempt, not a fixed pause that repeats unchanged. The OBS Project’s Output API Reference for OBS Studio 33.0.0 says, “The retry time will double on each retry to prevent overloading services.” Thus, each subsequent wait grows. A longer starting delay can reduce how quickly OBS retries during a transient interruption, while a shorter one begins attempts sooner; neither changes the underlying network conditions.
Maximum Retries caps attempts
This setting limits how many reconnect attempts OBS makes. A higher cap allows OBS to continue trying through a longer interruption; a lower cap means it stops sooner. The API documentation states that zero disables reconnecting. The reviewed OBS documentation does not provide a YouTube-specific recommended delay or retry count, so choose values based on how long an interruption you are willing to tolerate and test them with your own setup.

Why retries may not prevent a dropped stream
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. If enough frames are dropped, the output may disconnect. OBS also says intermittent disconnections are typically caused by network conditions outside OBS’s control. Automatic Reconnect is recovery behavior, not a fix for congestion, packet loss, an unstable Wi-Fi connection, insufficient sustained upload, or a server-side interruption. The available OBS guidance does not guarantee that every encoder reconnect will resume a YouTube live event seamlessly.
Troubleshoot repeated disconnects
- Check upload capacity and bitrate. OBS recommends matching video bitrate to stable upload capacity and lowering it when the connection cannot sustain the current setting. OBS mentions roughly 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point, not as a YouTube-specific guaranteed setting. Sustained performance and applicable service limits matter more than a brief peak speed reading.
- Try a wired connection. OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends connecting by Ethernet where possible. A wired link can remove one source of instability, but it cannot fix every network problem.
- Check software that can interfere. Review security software, VPNs, and network-optimization software as possible causes, along with relevant settings.
- Review drivers and network hardware. OBS lists network drivers, routers, and other hardware among possible sources of connection trouble. Check for problems along the computer-to-ingest-server route rather than assuming the retry count is the cause.
- Consider service or route conditions. If the local connection appears stable and the configured bitrate is sustainable, an interruption farther along the route or at the service may be involved. Retry settings cannot resolve an external outage.
