How to Configure OBS Replay Buffer Without Interrupting a YouTube Loop Stream

OBS Replay Buffer saves recent footage locally while your YouTube stream continues. Configure separate replay and stream hotkeys, then test performance before going live.

Configure OBS Replay Buffer as a separate local capture feature, give it hotkeys that are distinct from your stream controls, and use Save Replay while live. That saves recent footage to your computer without intentionally stopping the YouTube output. It cannot guarantee uninterrupted streaming on every system: buffering and recording use resources, so test the setup before a public broadcast.

What Replay Buffer does—and what it does not do

OBS Replay Buffer temporarily retains recent video and saves that segment locally when you trigger Save Replay. It is separate from the controls that start or stop streaming. Your YouTube stream can remain live while OBS saves a replay, provided the system can handle the additional work.

“YouTube loop stream” can refer to different things. OBS’s Media Source Loop option repeats a media file in a scene; it does not keep the broadcast live indefinitely. YouTube DVR lets viewers pause or rewind a live stream; it does not save a clip to your computer. Replay Buffer is OBS’s local capture feature. Keep these functions distinct when configuring or troubleshooting a stream.

Configure Replay Buffer without tying it to stream controls

  1. Open Settings → Output. Enable Replay Buffer, then choose a Maximum Replay Time. Set Maximum Memory if that option is available in your installed OBS version. Longer retention requires more resources; there is no universally safe duration.
  2. Choose where clips go. Set a recording path and a filename convention that will make the saved replay easy to find. Confirm that the destination has enough available space for your planned recordings.
  3. Assign separate hotkeys. In Settings → Hotkeys, set distinct keys for Start Replay Buffer, Stop Replay Buffer, and Save Replay. Keep them different from Start Streaming and Stop Streaming so a replay action does not accidentally end the broadcast.
  4. Start the buffer before you need it. Use its start control, or check whether your installed version offers an option to start it automatically when streaming. An older OBS community guide describes that workflow, but its availability and behavior should be verified in your version.
  5. Go live and save the moment. Start the YouTube stream as usual, confirm OBS shows the expected live status, then press the Replay Buffer’s Save Replay hotkey when you want to capture the recent segment. Do not press Stop Streaming.
  6. Verify both outputs. Check that the clip appears in the configured folder and that the stream remains healthy. OBS recommends testing settings, scenes, and stream performance before broadcasting publicly.

Choose settings around the clip you need

Set the replay duration to cover the amount of recent content you might want to recover, rather than choosing a large value without checking its cost. Balance that duration against available memory and encoder capacity. If you use Advanced Output mode, OBS offers separate stream and recording options; recording choices that differ from the stream can add resource demands. A safe setting depends on your computer, encoder, other OBS tasks, and recording workflow—there is no supported universal duration or hardware prescription.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Need a brief highlight: choose a shorter maximum replay time and confirm that the resulting clip captures enough lead-in.
  • Need a longer segment: increase retention cautiously, then test stream performance and inspect the saved clip before relying on it live.
  • Need clips for editing: verify the output folder, filename convention, and that the saved file works in your editing workflow.

Test before using it on a public broadcast

Use a local test or an unlisted/private stream to check the complete workflow. Start the buffer, begin streaming, save a replay, and confirm the clip is present and playable. While testing, watch OBS’s performance indicators and check whether the live output remains smooth. Repeat after changing the buffer duration or recording settings; a configuration that works on one workload may not behave the same with other scenes or tasks.

Troubleshooting

  • The replay is missing: confirm Replay Buffer was started before the moment you wanted, the Save Replay control was used, and the recording path points to a location you can access. Check the folder and filename settings.
  • The stream stopped when saving: inspect the hotkey assignments. Make sure Save Replay is distinct from Stop Streaming and that you are triggering the Replay Buffer control, not a stream-control key.
  • The stream becomes unstable or drops frames: reduce the maximum replay time or other recording workload, then test again. Buffering and recording consume resources; the cause and safe settings depend on the system.
  • The media repeats but the broadcast does not behave as expected: check the Media Source’s Loop setting separately from stream status. Loop repeats that source; it is not a control for maintaining a live broadcast indefinitely.
  • Viewers can rewind, but no local clip exists: YouTube DVR is viewer-facing playback behavior, not OBS Replay Buffer. Use OBS’s Save Replay control to write a local clip.
  • A setting or label is absent: OBS interface labels and options can vary by version. Check the installed version’s Output and Hotkeys screens rather than assuming an older guide’s exact controls are present.
