How to Configure OBS for 4K 60fps YouTube Live in Tamil

Set OBS for 3840×2160 at 60 FPS, choose the correct YouTube bitrate for your encoder, and test stability before going live.

To stream native 4K at 60 frames per second from OBS to YouTube, set Settings → Video to 3840×2160 and 60 FPS, then use Settings → Output to choose a supported encoder, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the bitrate for that codec. Test the complete setup before going live: 4K60 can strain both your upload connection and computer.

Menu names below are the English OBS labels, with Tamil explanations. OBS and YouTube interface wording may change; use the current OBS settings and YouTube Live Control Room for your account.

1. Prepare the YouTube live stream

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select your live event.
  2. Get the stream destination and stream key through the current Live Control Room workflow. In OBS, you will enter the key in the stream service settings. Treat it like a password: never show it in a screen recording, screenshot, or public post. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube before streaming again.
  3. Choose RTMPS if it is available for your ingest configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically. If you need to force a resolution, YouTube documents using a custom stream key and enabling manual stream-resolution settings; follow the options shown in your current account. YouTube’s live encoder settings explains the ingest settings.

2. Set OBS to 4K and 60 FPS

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Video.
  2. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 3840×2160 if your source composition is intended to be native 4K. This is the workspace OBS uses to arrange sources.
  3. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 for a 4K stream. If your source is lower resolution, OBS can scale it up, but that does not create detail absent from the source.
  4. Set Common FPS Value to 60.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.

Matching canvas and output dimensions avoids unintended scaling when your composition is already 4K. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can be substantially more demanding than 30 fps and recommends testing the system. If the computer cannot keep up, or your connection cannot sustain the stream, lower the output resolution or frame rate and test again rather than assuming that an upscaled 4K output is equivalent to native 4K. OBS’s overview describes canvas and output resolution and its performance considerations.

3. Configure the encoder, bitrate, and keyframes

  1. Open Settings → Output. If OBS is set to Simple output mode, switch to Advanced to expose the encoder controls discussed here.
  2. In the streaming section, choose an encoder available on your computer and supported by the YouTube ingest path you selected. Use the matching codec row in the table below; do not choose a bitrate based on a codec your encoder is not actually sending.
  3. Set Rate Control to CBR.
  4. Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  5. Set the bitrate using the YouTube guidance for 2160p at 60 fps below, then apply the settings.
Video codec sent to YouTube YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-recommended bitrate
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection will deliver a stable stream. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live video up to 60 fps, and recommends running an upload speed test and choosing a quality your connection can reliably sustain. Check YouTube’s current bitrate and ingest guidance before the event.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choosing among codecs

Use a codec that your OBS installation and selected YouTube ingest setup actually support. AV1 and H.265/HEVC have a lower YouTube-listed recommended bitrate than H.264 at 4K60, but that does not make either universally the best choice: encoder availability, upload stability, hardware load, and whether you are using SDR or HDR all matter. OBS says hardware encoders can move encoding work from the CPU to dedicated GPU hardware, while earlier-generation encoders may produce lower quality at the same bitrate. OBS’s hardware encoding guidance discusses the trade-off; it does not establish a best GPU model for every setup.

4. Set audio and color for the source

Stereo audio

For a conventional stereo stream, use AAC audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps, values in YouTube’s advanced live guidance. YouTube also lists MP3 as an audio option. Check that OBS is capturing the intended microphone, system audio, or media audio, and watch the mixer meters while testing so silence or clipping is caught before the event.

SDR color

For standard dynamic range (SDR), YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Keep the source, OBS color workflow, and stream settings aligned; changing an output color option cannot add color information that the source does not contain.

HDR

HDR requires an end-to-end workflow that supports it, from source through OBS encoding to YouTube ingest. YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC for HDR, lists 10-bit, and does not support AV1 for HDR in its stated guidance. Do not treat HDR as a switch that automatically improves SDR footage. Verify the current YouTube requirements and your own source and encoder capabilities before configuring an HDR event. YouTube’s live encoder settings includes the current codec, audio, and color guidance.

5. Add the right OBS sources

In your scene, add the source that matches what you are streaming: for example, display capture, window capture, game capture, camera, media, or text. A capture card is only relevant when you need to bring an HDMI source such as a camera or console into OBS; it is not required for display or window capture. OBS lists capture cards as one of several possible source types. See the OBS overview of sources and scenes.

If you need an HDMI capture card, verify its exact input resolution and frame rate, passthrough capability if needed, and operating-system compatibility before buying. The fact that a product is described as a capture card does not establish that it can ingest or pass through 4K60.

6. Test before the public stream

  1. Use a private or unlisted event where appropriate, and test the exact scene, encoder, bitrate, audio, and network you plan to use.
  2. Include representative motion, not just a static screen; check that both video and audio remain clean during the test.
  3. Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages while the feed is running. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  4. If the stream is unstable, reduce the bitrate or step down resolution or frame rate, then repeat the test. Choose the most demanding scene you expect to use so the test reflects the real workload.

OBS’s system requirements page cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Scene complexity, encoder, resolution, and frame rate affect load; the published OBS requirements are not a 4K60 performance guarantee. No single setting can certify that a particular machine will hold 4K60 reliably. OBS’s system requirements explains that distinction.

7. Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems

Symptom Likely cause What to try
YouTube does not receive the intended resolution or frame rate The stream is not sending the configured output, or the account is using automatic ingest detection. Confirm OBS’s Output (Scaled) Resolution and FPS. Check the current Live Control Room settings; if you need to force resolution, follow YouTube’s custom stream key and manual-resolution procedure.
Stream health reports dropped frames or the feed buffers The upload path may not sustain the selected bitrate consistently. Run an upload speed test, then lower bitrate and retest. If needed, reduce resolution or frame rate.
Video is choppy, OBS struggles, or encoding overload appears The computer may not manage the chosen encoder, scene complexity, resolution, and FPS together. Test the real scene; reduce output resolution or FPS, simplify demanding sources, or try an available hardware encoder. Retest rather than assuming a basic requirements match is sufficient.
The output looks soft despite being labeled 4K A lower-resolution source may be scaled up, or the source itself may lack detail. Check the source resolution and composition. Scaling to 3840×2160 does not restore detail that was never present.
The stream has no audio, distorted audio, or the wrong sound source OBS may be capturing the wrong input, or levels and format may not match the intended audio. Check the correct device and OBS audio meters; listen during a test and verify the configured codec, sample rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance.
YouTube rejects or fails to ingest the stream The key, ingest destination, selected codec, or stream settings may not match the current event configuration. Recheck the destination and key in Live Control Room, keep the key private, confirm RTMPS and codec compatibility, and restart a test with the current YouTube settings.
