How to Configure H.264 and H.265 for 4K 60fps YouTube Live

YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265 at 4K 60fps. Here are the encoder, HDR, audio, protocol, and testing settings to use.

For a 4K (2160p) YouTube Live stream at 60 fps, YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC. Set the encoder to CBR, use a two-second keyframe interval, and stream over RTMPS when available. For SDR, use Rec. 709 at 8-bit; for HDR, YouTube lists H.265 at 10-bit. Test the complete setup before going live.

Choose a codec and bitrate

YouTube’s live-streaming guidance lists these ingest bitrates for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. The minimum is a platform-listed floor, not a target that guarantees a reliable stream.

Codec Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate Color settings for SDR
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps Rec. 709, 8-bit
H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps Rec. 709, 8-bit

These are YouTube Help’s recommendations for live ingest; the page gives no publication or revision year. The appropriate setting also depends on whether your encoder supports the codec and whether you are streaming SDR or HDR. YouTube’s guide does not establish that one codec looks better at equal bitrate or compare encoder performance across specific applications or hardware.

Configure the video encoder

H.264 for SDR

  1. Set resolution to 3840 Ă— 2160 (2160p/4K) and frame rate to 60 fps.
  2. Choose H.264 and set video bitrate to 50 Mbps as the recommended starting point. YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the minimum.
  3. Set bitrate control to CBR (constant bitrate).
  4. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Do not exceed four seconds.
  5. Set color space to Rec. 709 and color depth to 8-bit for SDR.

H.265/HEVC for SDR

  1. Set resolution to 3840 Ă— 2160 and frame rate to 60 fps.
  2. Choose H.265/HEVC and set video bitrate to 35 Mbps as the recommended starting point. YouTube lists 10 Mbps as the minimum.
  3. Set bitrate control to CBR.
  4. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  5. Set color space to Rec. 709 and color depth to 8-bit for SDR.

The bitrate recommendations are not a promise that a particular connection, scene, encoder, or viewer device will deliver a particular result. YouTube advises choosing a quality that the upload connection can sustain reliably.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set HDR correctly

For HDR, YouTube lists H.265/HEVC as the video codec and 10-bit as the color depth. Its guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR, and says HLS can be considered if the encoder does not yet support the relevant HDR capabilities over RTMP. Do not treat H.264 as YouTube’s recommended HDR path based on this guidance. Confirm that your encoder and source are actually configured for HDR; selecting a codec alone does not make SDR material HDR.

Configure stream protocol and audio

  • Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported and recommends RTMPS. Use it when your encoder offers it.
  • Audio codec: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, its listed supported codec is AAC.
  • Stereo audio: 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate.
  • 5.1 audio: 48 kHz sample rate and 384 Kbps audio bitrate.
  • Advanced video options: YouTube’s guidance lists square pixel aspect ratio, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.

Set up the YouTube stream and test it

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and connect your encoder using the stream key and server details shown in YouTube’s live control room. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  2. Leave resolution and frame-rate detection automatic unless you need to force a specific output. YouTube says creators can create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under “Stream Resolution” to select resolution manually.
  3. In the encoder, match the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, color format, and audio settings to the choices above.
  4. Start an unlisted or otherwise low-risk test stream before the real event. Include motion and audio similar to what you expect to broadcast; a static test image may not reveal issues that appear during a documentary, concert, or fast-moving footage.
  5. Check YouTube’s stream health and read any messages shown in the live control room. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the output to a level it can maintain reliably, then test again.

YouTube Help explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” For 4K/2160p, YouTube says the low-latency optimization option is unavailable; its guidance sets 4K streams to normal latency, optimized for quality.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems

Symptom What to check
Stream health reports unstable or insufficient connection Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected video bitrate plus audio and network overhead. YouTube’s listed recommendation is not a guarantee for your connection. Try a lower stable bitrate and repeat the test.
Stream output does not match the intended resolution or frame rate Check the encoder’s output settings and YouTube’s resolution-detection or manual stream-key settings. Confirm that the encoder is sending 2160p at 60 fps rather than relying on the source file’s properties alone.
HDR is not being sent as intended Verify that the source and encoder support the intended HDR workflow, use H.265 and 10-bit, and check the protocol path. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR; HLS may be considered when the encoder lacks relevant RTMP HDR capabilities.
Keyframe or encoder settings are flagged Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; ensure the interval does not exceed four seconds. Check the advanced options listed above where your encoder exposes them.
Delay is higher than expected 4K/2160p does not offer YouTube’s low-latency optimization option in the cited guidance; 4K is set to normal latency.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded documentary footage looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an encoder configuration: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
