Compare the monthly cost of a 24/7 YouTube loop by holding the VM, region, operating system, storage and runtime constant, then adding transfer, licensing and required extras. An hourly compute rate alone is not the monthly bill. For continuous streaming, also check what you pay when a VM is stopped, what outbound bandwidth it can sustain, and whether its billing model caps hourly charges at a monthly amount.
What an hourly-versus-monthly comparison should measure
A cloud VM usually runs the encoder that sends one live feed to YouTube. YouTube handles playback distribution and transcodes the live stream for viewers, so do not multiply the VM’s outbound stream rate by the audience size as if the VM were serving every viewer. You still need to budget for the encoder’s outbound data and verify the VM’s sustained network capacity.
Compare the effective cost for the hours you actually plan to run, not just the provider’s advertised hourly or monthly compute figure. A useful starting worksheet is:

This is a worksheet, not a universal billing formula: discounts and billing rules vary. Check the selected provider’s calculator for the account, region, currency and agreement you will use.
Normalize the inputs before comparing prices
Use each provider’s calculator with the same workload assumptions. Changing the VM size, location or storage between quotes makes the result misleading.

Azure says its calculator can show negotiated prices when you are signed in; its listed retail pricing data is sourced from the Azure Retail Prices API. Treat calculator totals as specific to the selected account and assumptions, not a universal market price. Azure pricing calculator documentation.

Convert the hourly rate into a realistic monthly estimate
Use the billed hours for the period
For a loop that stays online continuously, calculate for the actual billing month or use the provider calculator’s documented monthly convention. Months have different numbers of calendar days, and a provider’s monthly figure may not simply equal its hourly rate multiplied by 30 days. Separate compute from the rest of the bill
Get the compute estimate for the selected VM, then account for storage, paid images or licenses, outbound transfer and any required add-ons. Google explicitly notes that its VM instance pricing page does not cover some disk, image, networking, GPU and related charges. Google Cloud VM instance pricing.
Check how a monthly cap works
A fixed monthly plan or a rate capped at a monthly plan cost can make continuous use easier to budget than an uncapped hourly rate. AWS Lightsail says it charges the fixed hourly price up to the plan’s maximum monthly cost. Its billing FAQ currently lists a lowest plan starting rate of $0.0067 USD/hour and $5 USD/month; this is a published starting example, not an apples-to-apples recommendation. Stopping a VM may not stop its charges
Distinguish stopping an instance from deleting it. AWS says Lightsail instances continue to accrue charges while stopped and plan charges continue until the instance is deleted; when deleted before month end, the bill is prorated by used hours. Other providers and services can have different rules, so check the exact product’s billing terms before treating a stopped VM as free. AWS Lightsail billing FAQ.
For a 24/7 loop, compare the cost of the full planned runtime and the consequences of interruptions, not just the cost of a short test run. If you intend to stop the VM between broadcasts, include storage and any other resources that remain billable.

Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the selected video settings
The VM must continuously upload the encoder feed at its chosen bitrate. YouTube’s current live encoder settings table recommends H.264 at 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are YouTube recommendations, not cloud VM prices or guaranteed quality outcomes. YouTube live encoder settings.

Check the cloud provider’s egress policy and the chosen machine’s network limits at that sustained rate. Google Cloud documents that egress capacity can have per-instance and per-flow limits that vary by machine series. Google Cloud network bandwidth documentation.
Configure the YouTube ingest connection securely
YouTube’s encoder setup requires a stream URL and stream key; its encoder settings recommend RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Treat the stream key like a password: do not place it in public scripts, screenshots or repositories. YouTube encoder setup; YouTube live encoder settings; YouTube stream key guidance.
Plan archives separately from the live loop
A continuous broadcast does not guarantee a complete recording of the same duration. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also says rewind may be limited or unavailable for very long streams. If you need a complete archive, do not assume a 24/7 stream will provide one. Compare actual provider options without picking a universal winner
There is no meaningful lowest-cost VM for every loop stream: the answer depends on region, configuration, runtime, storage and transfer. Put the same workload into each provider’s calculator, then compare the resulting total and operating constraints.
- Monthly total for identical inputs, including metered storage and transfer.
- Whether charges continue after the VM is stopped, and what deletion does to billing.
- Availability of the required machine and resources in the chosen region.
- Included transfer, outbound data pricing and sustained bandwidth limits.
- Whether the selected VM can reliably run the encoder at the target bitrate.
