A golf add-on is not medical insurance: check emergency treatment, evacuation or repatriation, and whether the policy covers your planned activities separately. The right policy depends on who is buying it and where they live, so there is no universally best option for every trip to Ireland.
Start with where you live and how you are travelling
Ireland is the destination, but it does not determine which policy you can buy. Eligibility, territorial limits and healthcare entitlements depend on your circumstances. Before requesting quotes, establish the following:
- Your country of residence and the country from which the trip begins.
- Whether this is a domestic trip for you or travel across a national border.
- Your travel dates, trip length and destinations, including any stops outside Ireland.
- Your age, any medical conditions that must be declared, and the activities you plan to do.
- Whether you need cover for one trip or several trips during the policy period.
Do not assume that a policy sold in Ireland is available to you simply because you are travelling there. Nor should a visitor assume that Irish health-card guidance applies to them. Confirm eligibility and healthcare rights using the rules for your own residence and status.
This distinction matters whether you live in Ireland and are taking a domestic golf break, are travelling to Ireland from another country, or are combining Ireland with other destinations. A policy’s territorial wording may define where cover begins and ends, while eligibility rules may depend on residency rather than nationality alone. Tell the insurer the full route and trip length, including stopovers, instead of comparing a quote based only on the days spent on Irish golf courses.

Also decide whether annual multi-trip insurance suits your plans or whether a single-trip policy is more appropriate. Annual cover can be relevant if you expect several trips during the policy period, but check its maximum duration per trip and eligible destinations. Do not assume that a multi-trip policy includes the golf extension automatically: AA Ireland describes its extension as an additional purchase for eligible single-trip or annual multi-trip cover, and excludes backpacker policies.
Make the main travel policy the first decision
Travel insurance should fit the whole trip, not just the golf. Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs advises travellers to consider emergency medical care, evacuation, an unexpected extra stay, assistance, liability, possessions, cancellation and cover for relevant activities. Read the policy wording and schedule, not only a summary of benefits, to see what is included and excluded.
Check medical and emergency support
Look at the limit for emergency medical expenses, emergency assistance, evacuation and repatriation. These benefits are distinct from protection for clubs or green fees. Check whether the wording covers the golf you intend to play and whether any activity exclusion could affect an injury on the course.
Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs reports that Insurance Ireland recommends at least €1 million in medical cover. The page reviewed does not state the year of that recommendation. It is a recommendation attributed to Insurance Ireland, not a legal minimum or proof that the same limit suits every traveller. Compare available limits against your needs and the policy’s exclusions.

The Department of Foreign Affairs includes an unexpected extra stay and assistance among the matters travellers should consider. Check what events can trigger additional accommodation or travel costs, the relevant limits, and whether the insurer must authorize expenses in advance. Do not assume that ordinary trip-curtailment cover will pay every cost associated with a delay or extended stay.
Ask how to reach the insurer’s emergency assistance service while abroad, and keep the contact details accessible rather than only in an email account you may not be able to open. Assistance services and reimbursement cover are related but not identical: follow the policy’s instructions for arranging treatment, evacuation or other costly services. The wording and insurer’s instructions determine what is covered.
Review cancellation, curtailment, baggage and liability
Check the cancellation limit before departure and curtailment cover if you must cut a trip short. Compare the baggage and possessions section with the separate golf-equipment benefit: a general baggage limit may have different item caps, exclusions or conditions. Review personal liability and the insurer’s emergency-assistance arrangements as well.
Read exclusions for pre-existing medical conditions, known events and intoxication, along with any conditions that apply to your planned activities. If you have a medical condition, disclose it as required and make sure the quote and schedule reflect the insurer’s decision; do not infer cover from a generic product description.

Understand what golf cover adds—and what it does not
Golf protection is commonly an optional extension to travel insurance. Depending on the policy, it may cover owned equipment, replacement-hire costs and certain prepaid golf fees. The exact benefits and conditions vary, and the extension may need to be selected for an additional premium and shown on your schedule.
AA Ireland describes its golf extension as covering equipment, hiring replacement equipment and certain non-refundable golf fees. It says the extension itself does not cover medical emergencies on the course. That statement describes its extension, not every golf policy. In all cases, inspect the underlying policy’s medical, repatriation and activity terms separately.
Think of the policy as two decisions: first, whether the main travel cover is suitable; second, whether the golf extension is worth its additional premium for your equipment and prepaid bookings. A golf add-on that protects clubs cannot fill a gap in emergency medical cover, and a strong medical policy does not necessarily insure expensive clubs or green fees. Confirm that both sets of benefits are included if you need both.
Equipment: test the limit against your actual clubs
Check the total equipment limit and any per-item cap, then find out whether the policy covers loss, theft and damage. Confirm whether clubs, bag, shoes and trolley are treated as covered equipment, and whether protection applies during airline transit as well as at the course. A headline total may not tell you how much you can claim for a particular item.
Look for depreciation, excess and proof-of-ownership requirements. A policy may settle an older item at less than its replacement cost, and the amount paid can be reduced by an excess or item limit. Keep receipts or other evidence of ownership and value, and ask how the insurer treats equipment without a purchase receipt.
For example, a total equipment limit is not necessarily the amount payable for a single damaged club. A per-item cap may restrict a claim even when the combined value of all your equipment is below the headline total. Depreciation can reduce the assessed value further, and an excess may reduce the settlement after that. Compare the policy’s calculation rules with the value of the clubs and bag you actually plan to take.
For airline problems, check the policy’s definition of loss, delay or damage and whether it requires you to report the incident to the carrier first. An airline property irregularity report and baggage tags may be important evidence. Do not assume that an airline’s handling of your clubs automatically triggers a particular insurance benefit.
If you are considering a golf-club travel bag as a way to transport your clubs, treat it as an accessory, not a substitute for insurance. Check the airline’s current size and handling requirements before buying or packing one. The available product information does not establish that any particular travel bag is durable, compatible with every airline or covered by an insurer; those are separate checks.
Replacement hire: check both the daily and total caps
If clubs are delayed, lost or damaged, replacement-hire cover may reimburse eligible rental costs. Compare the daily allowance with the maximum for the whole trip and check when the benefit starts, what event triggers it, and which receipts or carrier documents are required. A daily limit alone does not reveal the maximum reimbursement.

- Travel-Friendly Design: Featuring Triple Handles at the top, middle, and bottom positions, this cover offers easy carrying and transport in various scenarios.
Ask whether the benefit applies only after a defined delay or loss, whether you must first contact the airline, and how long you can claim hire costs. Check that the daily cap is useful for the length of time the policy might take to respond to an eligible incident. Keep rental receipts and any airline incident paperwork; a rental cost is not automatically reimbursable just because your clubs did not arrive with you.
Green fees and tuition: identify the triggering event
Unused prepaid green fees may be covered only in specified circumstances, such as illness or injury that prevents you from playing. Check whether medical confirmation is required, whether the fees must be non-refundable, and whether the policy reimburses only unused amounts. Tuition or other prepaid golf costs may have different wording; do not assume they are included because green fees are mentioned.
Cancellation of the entire trip and becoming unable to play after the trip has started may fall under different policy sections. Check which section applies to each situation, its limit, and the evidence needed. A golf-fee benefit is not automatically a refund for a change of plans, poor weather or choosing not to play.
For any prepaid booking, keep the original receipt and the provider’s terms showing whether the amount is refundable. If you become unable to play because of illness or injury, obtain medical confirmation and retain evidence of the unused fee. The policy may require that the fee could not be recovered from the golf venue, and a benefit may be capped by day and in total. Confirm these conditions before relying on a quoted maximum.
Other golf benefits are policy-specific
Some product descriptions mention a hole-in-one benefit. Treat it as a separate, conditional feature rather than evidence of broad golf protection. Check the wording for eligibility, documentation and any limit, and decide whether the benefit matters to your trip.

| AA Ireland golf extension | Optional extension for eligible single-trip or annual multi-trip cover, for an additional premium. The product description identifies equipment, replacement-equipment hire and certain non-refundable golf fees. Backpacker policies are excluded. | Eligibility, premium, precise equipment and fee limits, excess, exclusions, and confirmation that the extension appears on the schedule. Its golf extension itself does not provide medical-emergency cover on the course. |
| JustCover golf add-on | The product page advertises up to €1,500 for golf equipment; replacement hire up to €20 per day and €200 total; and unused green fees up to €75 per day and €300 total. It describes the add-on as optional and says golf travel cover can apply to a trip in Ireland. | Whether those limits apply to your quote, the policy’s definitions and conditions, applicable excesses, and required evidence. The page specifies conditions including police reporting and medical confirmation for relevant claims. |
| AIG policy wording, August 2025 | The wording says golf cover applies only when the appropriate premium is paid and shown on the policy schedule. It gives examples of claim evidence for golf-related sections. | Whether the wording applies to the policy you are considering, the current schedule and full limits. Its documentation rules are an example, not a universal insurer requirement. |
These examples illustrate different kinds of cover, not a like-for-like ranking. The available information does not establish current premiums, the full terms for every purchaser, or which provider is cheapest or best for your circumstances.
When comparing costs, look at the total premium for the same traveller, dates, destinations and chosen benefits. For a golf extension, compare the extra premium with the limits and exclusions that matter to you: a higher headline equipment amount may be less useful if the per-item cap is low, while a generous hire allowance may not matter if you are bringing no clubs. No typical premium or market-wide price is established here, so request current quotes rather than estimating from another person’s trip.
Know what EHIC can and cannot do
An EHIC provides eligible people access to public healthcare in another EU/EEA state, and in Switzerland under the relevant arrangements, free or at reduced cost. Eligibility depends on the traveller’s circumstances. The Irish Department of Health describes the card in terms of eligible people receiving healthcare in another EU/EEA state; that does not mean every visitor to Ireland is entitled to use it there.

EHIC is not a complete travel policy. It does not cover medical repatriation, and some private facilities may not accept it. Check your entitlement and the applicable public-healthcare arrangements based on your residence and status. Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs states: “The EHIC is not a substitute for proper travel insurance provided by a reputable insurer.”
If you are an eligible Irish resident travelling in the EU/EEA or Switzerland, check the official eligibility and card rules that apply to you. If you are visiting Ireland from elsewhere, do not assume that an EHIC issued to someone with a different residence or status gives you the same entitlement. Even when a card can help with access to public healthcare, it does not provide cover for repatriation or replace the broader cancellation, baggage, liability and assistance benefits of travel insurance.
Compare quotes on the same basis
Request quotes using the same traveller details, itinerary, dates and cover levels. Otherwise, a lower premium may simply reflect a shorter trip, different medical limits or missing golf cover. Compare the total premium alongside the benefits that matter to you:
- Emergency medical expenses, assistance, evacuation and repatriation limits.
- Cancellation and curtailment limits.
- General baggage cover and any separate golf-equipment total and per-item caps.
- Cover for damage, theft, loss in transit, delayed equipment and hired replacement clubs.
- Depreciation, excess and the policy’s definition of covered equipment.
- Green-fee or tuition conditions, including the triggering event and required medical evidence.
- Declared-condition terms, activity wording, destination limits and eligibility.
- Claim-reporting deadlines, required documents and the contact process.
Ask questions before purchase if the wording leaves a material uncertainty, and retain the answer with your policy documents. A comparison is only useful if the purchased policy and schedule actually show the cover you intended to buy.
Use a consistent checklist for each quote. First, confirm that you are eligible to buy it and that its geography covers the entire route. Next, compare the main policy’s medical, repatriation, cancellation, baggage and liability protection. Then review the golf section separately: equipment total and item caps, covered causes of loss, transit and delay terms, hire limits, unused-fee rules, excess and any additional premium. Finally, check what must be reported, to whom, and by when.

Keep the policy schedule, full wording and insurer contact details accessible while travelling. Save receipts for prepaid green fees and equipment, plus evidence of equipment ownership and value. For an airline incident, retain baggage tags and request the carrier’s incident or property irregularity report. If equipment is lost or stolen, report it promptly to the appropriate authorities where required by the policy. For an injury or illness that prevents play, obtain medical confirmation and keep receipts for unused prepaid fees.
AIG’s August 2025 standard policy wording is one example of detailed evidence rules: it identifies police reports for loss or theft, airline property irregularity reports and baggage tags for airline incidents, proof of value and ownership, and medical confirmation and receipts for unused golf fees. Requirements vary, so follow the deadlines and instructions in your own policy rather than treating that example as a universal checklist.
For a potential claim, act promptly and follow the insurer’s process rather than waiting until you return home to assemble evidence. Report loss or theft within the deadline in your policy, ask the airline for its incident report if it handled the clubs, and keep copies of all correspondence. If you cannot play because of an injury or illness, seek appropriate medical care and obtain documentation from the treating professional. Keep receipts for any eligible expenses, including replacement hire, but do not assume that submitting a receipt alone establishes that the expense is covered.

Make the decision against your trip, not a headline benefit
Start by confirming that you can buy the policy and that it covers the full itinerary. Choose medical and cancellation protection that fits your needs, then decide whether the additional golf benefits justify their cost. If you are taking expensive clubs, the equipment limit, per-item cap and depreciation may matter more than a small green-fee benefit. If you are travelling without your own clubs, replacement-hire terms may be more relevant. If you have prepaid golf, read the precise conditions for unused fees.
No reliable market-wide statistic on golf-insurance claim frequency, golfer injury rates or typical premiums is established by the sources cited here. Compare actual quotes and wording for your circumstances rather than relying on a generic ranking or a single advertised limit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my travel insurance cover golf in Ireland?
Not automatically. Check whether golf is covered under the main policy’s activity terms and whether golf equipment, hire costs or prepaid fees require a separately purchased extension. Confirm that the extension is shown on your schedule and that the trip’s geography and dates are covered.
Are my golf clubs covered if an airline loses them?
That depends on the policy’s equipment, baggage and transit wording. Check the total and per-item limits, any delay or loss conditions, excess and reporting deadline. Keep baggage tags and ask the airline for an incident or property irregularity report; your insurer may require them.
Will EHIC cover a golf injury in Ireland?
EHIC entitlement depends on your residence and status, so a visitor should not assume they qualify. For eligible people, the card supports access to public healthcare under applicable arrangements, but it does not cover medical repatriation or replace travel insurance. Some private facilities may not accept it.
Does golf cover pay for green fees if I cannot play?
Some policies cover eligible unused prepaid fees when illness or injury prevents play, but conditions vary. Check whether the fee must be non-refundable, whether medical confirmation is required, and the daily and total limits. Cancellation of the entire trip may be handled under a different policy section.
How much does golf travel insurance for Ireland cost?
The cost depends on the traveller, itinerary, cover levels and selected extensions. No typical premium is established here. Compare current quotes using the same details and account for the golf extension’s additional premium, excess and limits rather than comparing headline prices alone.
What should I keep in case I need to claim?
Keep your policy schedule and wording, equipment receipts or other proof of ownership and value, prepaid-fee receipts, and insurer contact details. For airline incidents, retain baggage tags and the carrier’s report; for loss or theft, follow the policy’s reporting instructions; for inability to play because of illness or injury, keep medical confirmation.
The Bottom Line
Buy travel cover for your residence and full itinerary, then check medical and repatriation protection separately from any golf extension. Compare the extension’s equipment caps, hire allowance, green-fee conditions, excess and claim requirements against what you are actually taking and booking. Confirm all selected cover on the policy schedule; neither EHIC entitlement nor a headline golf benefit replaces a policy suited to your circumstances.
