For a recurring scheduled stream, choose a custom YouTube stream key if you want to reuse the same key in your encoder. Select a key whose protocol matches the encoder’s ingestion method. The key only gets the encoder’s video feed to YouTube: it does not schedule a broadcast or play and loop a 24/7 playlist for you.
What a YouTube stream key does—and does not do
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: an encoder uses it, together with the stream URL, to send a video feed to YouTube. Keep it private. Anyone who obtains a usable key may be able to send a feed to the associated stream.
- It does: identify the destination feed and let a compatible encoder connect to YouTube.
- It does not: create the scheduled event, start the encoder, choose or loop videos, or ensure an uninterrupted broadcast.
A 24/7 playlist therefore involves separate pieces: the scheduled YouTube stream, the key and matching protocol, an encoder that supplies the video, and whatever playback automation keeps the playlist running. Reusing a key simplifies the connection setup; it does not combine those jobs.
Choose the key based on how your encoder connects
Recurring standard encoder stream
If you plan to connect the same encoder workflow to recurring scheduled streams, create a custom stream key in YouTube Live Control Room and reuse it where appropriate. YouTube also lets you reuse prior stream settings when scheduling. Put the stream URL in the encoder’s server field and the selected key in its Stream Key field.

This is the practical default when your encoder uses YouTube’s standard supported ingest workflow. Do not choose a protocol merely because it sounds more suitable for a long broadcast; the key’s protocol must match what the encoder actually sends.
HLS ingest
Choose HLS only when your encoder and intended ingestion workflow use HLS. YouTube’s HLS instructions call for creating a new stream key with HLS selected. The documented HLS requirements include 1–4 second segments, TS segment format, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption other than HTTPS.

These are HLS-specific requirements, not settings to copy into an RTMP workflow. If you are unsure which protocol the encoder uses, check its YouTube ingest configuration before creating or changing the key.
Schedule the stream and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Select Manage, then choose Schedule stream.
- Set up the scheduled stream. Reuse prior settings or create a stream, then configure its event details in Live Control Room.
- Choose the matching key. For a recurring standard encoder workflow, use the custom key you intend to reuse. For HLS, create a key with HLS selected and follow the HLS requirements above.
- Enter the connection details in the encoder. Paste YouTube’s displayed stream URL into the encoder’s server field and the chosen key into its Stream Key field. Use the encoder’s corresponding protocol setting.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm both picture and sound before selecting Go live.
- Monitor the broadcast. Check the stream’s audio and video quality after it starts, and keep monitoring while it runs.
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled start. Those are operational recommendations, not a guarantee of 24/7 continuity. YouTube also recommends checking the preview and confirming that viewers can reach the stream through channel and watch pages and on mobile devices.

Plan for the 12-hour archive boundary
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a broadcast intended to run continuously for 24 hours or longer, do not assume that one uninterrupted stream will be archived in full. The cited YouTube instructions do not provide a complete continuity or archive strategy for a stream that exceeds that duration.
Decide separately how you will handle the length of the broadcast, any needed recording or archive, and what should happen if the encoder or YouTube connection stops. A reusable key does not solve those operational requirements, and the cited guidance does not establish a third-party failover design.

Protect or replace a compromised key
If you think someone else has obtained the key, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the encoder. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. After replacing it, confirm the encoder is using the new key and check its preview before going live.
