Choose a hardware streaming encoder by matching it to your complete live-video path: the camera or switcher output, the destination’s ingest requirements, the resolution and frame rate you need, and the upload capacity at the venue. Then verify those exact combinations in the encoder’s specifications. A headline such as “4K” or a codec name alone does not establish that a model supports your input, output protocol, and chosen mode together.
Start with the source and its output
Write down what the camera, switcher, or other source actually sends—not just the quality you hope to stream. Check the output connector available where the encoder will sit, such as HDMI or SDI, and the signal format it carries. Compare that with the exact encoder model’s input specifications, including connector version and supported signal modes.
A connector that fits physically is not enough if the encoder does not accept the source’s signal format. If the source can output several formats, identify the one you will use and confirm the encoder accepts it at the required resolution and frame rate.
Check the destination before choosing encoder features
Name the platform, CDN, or private server that will receive the stream. Confirm its current ingest protocol, permitted codecs, resolution and frame-rate limits, and bitrate guidance. The destination’s requirements determine which encoder output combinations will work; a codec appearing in a product specification does not mean it is available over every protocol that the encoder offers.

For YouTube, the current live encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among its settings. It recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for transport encryption. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. These are YouTube-specific settings, not general requirements for other destinations; check the platform’s current guidance before configuring a stream.
The codec and protocol need to work together on both ends. For example, Teradek’s Prism configuration guide says H.264 is required for RTMP/WHIP in the configuration it covers. That statement applies to the documented configuration, not to every encoder or protocol. Verify the exact pairing in the documentation for your encoder and destination.

Match resolution and frame rate to the whole signal path
Decide what you need to deliver, then confirm each link supports it: source output, encoder input and encode mode, destination ingest, and available network capacity. Check the model’s specification matrix for simultaneous input and encoding modes—such as 1080p60 or 4K30—rather than assuming a headline resolution guarantees every frame rate, codec, or protocol combination.
YouTube’s bitrate figures below are its recommendations on the page accessed in 2026. They are targets for YouTube ingest, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain a stream or that another platform uses the same values.

| YouTube video mode | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p30 | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p60 | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
Use the figures as destination-specific guidance and verify the live YouTube page before setup, because ingest recommendations can change. The codec options may also depend on your production format—for example, YouTube’s HDR guidance differs from its general codec list.
Make sure the venue network can carry the stream
Compare the selected bitrate with sustained upload capacity at the actual streaming location. Leave operating headroom for network variation instead of allocating the entire connection to video. A speed test or advertised connection rate is not proof that the link will sustain the stream throughout an event.

Consider how the encoder will connect: wired Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or a bonded network if your production requires one. Check whether the exact model supports the network arrangement you plan to use. If the upload path cannot support the chosen mode consistently, reduce the target mode or improve the connection before adding encoder features.

Verify installation, support, and the exact model
Before buying, review the current manufacturer documentation for power, cooling, mounting, control workflow, firmware and support status, warranty, regional availability, and return terms. For a fixed installation, account for mounting and power at the intended location; for mobile work, consider how the device will be secured and operated on site.
Blackmagic Design’s Streaming Processors technical specifications and product information illustrate the dedicated hardware streaming-processor category, including products described as self-contained hardware encoders for direct network streaming. They are an example, not a universal recommendation: confirm the precise model’s input modes, protocol and codec capabilities, regional availability, and warranty on the current manufacturer pages. Do not assume every product in a family has identical features.
A practical buying checklist
- Record the source’s actual output connector, resolution, frame rate, and signal format at the encoder location.
- Identify the destination and check its current ingest protocol, supported codecs, resolution and frame-rate limits, and bitrate guidance.
- Choose the needed delivery mode and codec; verify the destination and encoder support that exact combination.
- Check sustained upload capacity at the venue against the target bitrate, leaving headroom for variation.
- Compare the exact encoder model’s input and encode-mode matrix against your source and delivery needs.
- Add only necessary production features, such as multiple destinations, recording, failover, or remote monitoring, and confirm them in current documentation.
- Check power, cooling, mounting, control, firmware/support status, warranty, stock, and return terms for your region before purchase.
When a hardware encoder is not the right question
A hardware encoder is a production device for taking a live source and sending an encoded stream to a destination. If your goal is instead to keep a YouTube channel live by looping videos you have already uploaded, that is a different workflow: a cloud service can run the playback without a camera or an encoder at your location.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
