A “Limited ad earnings” notice means YouTube considers a stream eligible for some ads, but advertisers who choose safer content may avoid it. YouTube says lower ad revenue should be expected compared with content suitable to all advertisers; the notice does not tell you how much revenue you lost or prove it caused a particular change. To investigate, compare ad-specific metrics for comparable periods in YouTube Analytics, not RPM alone.
Check the stream’s monetization status in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Find the 24/7 stream and inspect its Notices column. A “Limited ad earnings” notice indicates an advertiser-suitability limitation. YouTube says the stream remains eligible for ads, but brands that opt to advertise only on safer content will not run ads on it. This describes the direction of the possible effect, not a percentage or dollar amount. YouTube Help: Limited or no ad earnings explained.
- Note when the notice appeared and whether the stream was undergoing an ad-suitability check. Ads do not run while a check is in progress, so that period is not a good baseline for ordinary ad delivery.
Find the ad-specific numbers in Analytics
Open YouTube Analytics for the stream and select the Revenue tab. Where available, use the stream or content revenue report and distinguish estimated ad revenue from estimated revenue. Estimated revenue includes all revenue types; estimated ad revenue is the more relevant figure for an ad-restriction question. YouTube’s metric definitions are in Understand ad revenue analytics.
Metrics to compare
- Views: total video play counts, not the number of times ads were shown.
- Estimated monetized playbacks: times the video was watched with ads. This is generally lower than views because not every view receives an ad.
- Ad impressions: individual ads displayed. A playback may contain more than one ad, so impressions and monetized playbacks are different measures.
- Estimated ad revenue: ad-only revenue; use this rather than total estimated revenue to assess an ad-specific change.
- Playback-based CPM: advertiser cost per 1,000 playbacks on which an ad appeared. It is advertiser-side cost before the creator’s revenue share, not your take-home revenue.
- RPM: creator revenue per 1,000 views across multiple sources, including ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. It also counts views that were not monetized, so it cannot isolate an ad-only effect.
Compare like with like
For a continuous stream, choose periods of comparable duration and time of day, then keep the unit of comparison consistent. YouTube does not prescribe a universal formula for calculating the causal revenue loss from a limited-ad status; the comparisons below are practical ways to interpret its metrics, not a platform-guaranteed test.
- Compare estimated ad revenue per view and per monetized playback, alongside total ad revenue.
- Compare monetized playbacks as a share of views, and ad impressions per monetized playback.
- Check playback-based CPM and whether the stream’s audience geography or view mix changed.
- Record the stream’s monetization status and the timing of any suitability check for each period.
A lower ad-revenue rate during a limited-ad period is consistent with the status reducing earnings, but does not establish the size of the effect. Changes in audience, content, packaging, or stream configuration can also affect the comparison. You cannot observe what the same stream would have earned under identical conditions without the limited status.

Rule out other reasons for a revenue change
Not every view receives an ad. YouTube identifies factors such as ad availability, viewer geography, targeting, recent ad exposure, Premium status, ad formats, and advertiser-friendliness as influences on ad delivery and CPM. Seasonal advertiser demand can also change. A shift in any of these can move revenue even if the notice itself has not changed. See YouTube’s explanation of ad revenue analytics.

If the limited-ad decision seems wrong
Review the stream and its packaging against YouTube’s advertiser-friendly guidance. The assessment can consider the live stream itself as well as its title, thumbnail, description, and tags. Context, focus, tone, realism, and graphicness can matter. YouTube’s advertiser-friendly content guidance explains the criteria.
If the content meets the criteria, request human review when YouTube makes an appeal available for that stream. YouTube describes how reviews work and how to submit an appeal in its help articles on advertiser-friendly monetization reviews and appeals for limited or no ad earnings. For scheduled live streams, YouTube says it may check the title, description, thumbnail, and tags before the stream goes live.

Published timing guidance is not a guaranteed service level: YouTube says ad-suitability checks usually take less than 20 minutes and at most one hour, while some monetization decisions may take up to 24 hours. Ads do not run during a check in progress. See the monetization icon guide.
Allow for estimated-revenue adjustments
Do not draw a firm conclusion from very recent estimated revenue. YouTube says estimates may be adjusted for invalid traffic, Content ID claims or disputes, and some ad campaign types. Its earnings guidance describes adjustments after about one week and again in the middle of the following month; these are published process timings, not a guarantee that every estimate changes on that schedule.
