1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore paying an agent, booking a flight, or leaving home, verify the employer, recruiter, specific job, contract, and work authorization through sources you find independently. A professional-looking offer letter or visa document is not proof that a job is real. The right checks depend on your country of origin, destination, occupation, and visa program, so treat this as a safety workflow—not a universal statement of local law.
The safest approach is to treat each part of the offer as a separate claim that needs confirmation. A genuine agency does not automatically make a particular vacancy genuine; a real employer does not automatically make every visa arrangement lawful; and a document that looks official is not authenticated just because it carries a logo or stamp. Work through the checks below before making a payment or travel commitment.
Start by identifying the exact job and everyone involved
Write down the details you need to verify before contacting anyone:
- The employer’s full legal name and the actual worksite address.
- The recruiter or agency’s legal name and, if relevant, licence number.
- The job title, duties, and occupation or job-order identifier.
- The destination country and proposed visa or work-permit category.
- Your country of origin and the recruitment route being used.
These details matter because a licence, visa category, or employment process valid in one country or program may not apply in another. If the recruiter will not identify the employer or worksite clearly, pause rather than trying to verify an incomplete offer.

Make a simple record of what you have been told, including the name of each person or organization, dates of conversations, and the exact terms promised. Keep the original messages and documents. The point is not to build a case against the recruiter; it is to make it possible to compare the same details across the offer letter, contract, official records, and employer confirmation. If one source gives a different legal name, location, job title, or visa category, ask for an explanation before proceeding.
Be specific about the route. For example, note whether the recruiter says you are being hired directly by an employer or placed through an agency, and whether the job is associated with a named temporary-worker program. The relevant public records and responsible authority depend on those particulars. If the recruiter cannot tell you which program or visa route applies, that is an unresolved question—not a reason to guess.
Verify the recruiter and the specific job separately
Find the destination immigration authority and your origin-country labour migration authority by navigating to their official websites yourself. Search official government business or employer records and, where one exists, the recruiter-licensing register. Check whether the particular job order or labour certification is recorded in a public database when the destination program provides one.
A valid agency licence does not prove that a particular vacancy is genuine. Confirm both the agency and the specific offer or job order. The U.S. Department of Labor directs applicants for certain U.S. temporary jobs to SeasonalJobs.dol.gov and its recruiter or contractor lookup resources; those tools apply to specified U.S. programs, not overseas recruitment generally. India-origin workers can consult the Indian government’s active recruitment-agent list. An IOM guide for hiring domestic workers in Hong Kong recommends checking the Labour Department’s employment-agency portal. Use the register relevant to your country pair and program, rather than assuming these examples apply everywhere.
Recommended Free Tools
When you search a register, compare the legal name and other identifying details, not just a similar brand name. If the register has a licence number, look it up yourself and check the status and scope shown by the authority. A name appearing in a business directory is not necessarily proof of recruitment authorization, and a recruiter’s screenshot of a listing is not the same as checking the live official record. If the country or program has a public job-order or labour-certification database, search the specific vacancy or identifier as well as the agency.
Do not rely on links, phone numbers, screenshots, or documents supplied only by the recruiter. Search for the authority independently, then use the official contact details and records you find there. False offers and convincing-looking documents are documented scam tactics, so appearance alone cannot authenticate a job.
If you cannot find a public register, that does not by itself prove the agency is illegitimate: some places use different processes, and some records may not be publicly searchable. Instead, ask the relevant labour migration authority or embassy/consulate how to verify a recruiter and job on your route. Do not substitute a search result, social media profile, or recruiter-provided certificate for a confirmation from the responsible authority.
Confirm the offer directly with the employer
Locate the employer’s contact details through an independently found corporate or government listing—not only through the offer letter or recruiter’s message. Contact the employer’s HR department and ask it to confirm the job, the named recruiter, the worksite, and the contract. If the recruiter claims to act for the company, ask the employer whether that relationship is genuine.

Keep the questions factual and concrete: Is this job currently being offered? Is this recruiter authorized to recruit for it? Is the named worksite correct? Does the employer recognize the contract and the terms you were given? If the employer confirms the vacancy but disputes the recruiter or the terms, do not assume the discrepancy is harmless. Ask the employer and the appropriate authority to clarify it before you pay or travel.

Use a channel you found independently. A phone number printed on the offer letter may lead back to the recruiter, and a reply from an address or messaging account supplied in the same conversation does not independently establish who is answering. The goal is to reach the employer through contact information found through its own corporate or government listing, then ask for confirmation of the essential details.
Be cautious if all communication is limited to messaging apps, the employer cannot be reached through an independent channel, or the recruiter discourages direct contact. These are reasons to stop and investigate; by themselves, they do not establish that a fraud has occurred.
Read the contract before you travel
Ask for a signed written contract early enough to review it carefully, in a language you understand. Compare it with the offer, recruiter’s promises, and visa documents. The contract should make the material terms clear, including:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Employer identity, job title, duties, and work location.
- Pay, how and when wages are paid, and any applicable overtime or holiday terms.
- Bonuses, allowances, deductions, and who pays recruitment or travel costs.
- Contract duration, renewal and termination terms, and grounds for early termination.
- Permitted entry and residence conditions, including who pays for the journey and return travel.
Do not treat the contract as a formality to sign at the airport or after arrival. You need time to understand whether it reflects the offer you accepted and whether it matches the work authorization being arranged. If the recruiter says the written terms will be changed after you arrive, or that the contract is unavailable until you travel, pause and ask the relevant labour authority or embassy/consulate what is required for your route.
Read the terms as a connected package. A stated wage may not tell you what you will receive if the contract also lists deductions, allowances, or a different payment method. A job title alone may not describe the actual duties or work location. Check whether the contract identifies the employer that appears in the visa paperwork and whether it describes the same role the recruiter promised. Note anything unclear and ask for a written explanation or an explanation from an appropriate official source before accepting.
Pay particular attention to duration, renewal, and termination terms. Understand what the contract says about when the job ends, whether renewal is described, and what grounds are given for early termination. Also check who is responsible for the journey and return travel costs. These are material conditions, and an unclear answer can leave you with a different arrangement from the one you thought you accepted.
Ask the relevant labour authority or embassy/consulate to explain terms you do not understand. A contract that changes the promised job, employer, worksite, or visa arrangement needs to be resolved before departure, not after you arrive.
Question every request for money
ILO fair-recruitment guidance says workers should not be charged recruitment fees or related costs. Its Helpdesk reproduces the Convention No. 181 principle that “Private employment agencies shall not charge directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, any fees or costs to workers.” However, governments may authorize exceptions in some circumstances. Check the applicable law and any authorized exception for your countries and program; the ILO principle is not a substitute for that local check.
A demand to pay an employer or intermediary to “secure” a job or visa is a serious warning sign. The UK government advises that legitimate UK visa applicants use the official application route and says, “There are no shortcuts to working in the UK, and a legitimate employer would never ask for payment to secure a visa.” That is UK-specific guidance, not a complete description of fee rules worldwide.

Ask the recruiter to identify each requested charge, who receives it, what it is for, and the official basis for charging it. Check the answer with the responsible labour or immigration authority using contact details you found independently. A fee may be described as a processing cost, placement charge, deposit, visa payment, or travel expense; the label alone does not establish that it is lawful or properly payable. Do not assume that a charge is valid because it appears on an invoice or is described as customary.
Do not send money to a personal account, buy a visa through an unofficial intermediary, or pay under pressure before confirming the charge with the relevant official authority. Ask for the legal basis, an itemized explanation, and an official receipt where a payment is permitted. If you cannot independently verify the fee, stop before paying.

A short deadline, a warning that the job will disappear unless you pay immediately, or an instruction to keep the payment secret should not replace verification. Do not let a recruiter’s deadline prevent you from checking the employer, contract, visa route, and charge. If you have already paid, keep the receipt and messages and contact the relevant authority or embassy/consulate for advice on what to do next; do not make another payment just because the first one did not resolve the issue.
Check that the visa authorizes this work
Use the destination country’s official immigration authority to confirm that the visa or work permit is genuine and permits the offered work for the named employer and worksite. A visa that allows entry is not necessarily permission to work. Do not assume a visitor or tourist visa can be used for employment.
Check the exact category and conditions against the job details rather than asking only whether the visa is “valid.” The key question is whether it permits this offered work under destination rules, including the named employer and worksite where those details matter. If the recruiter says a different visa will be arranged later, or that you can begin work while the proper authorization is pending, verify that claim directly with the destination immigration authority before taking any step.
The Indian Embassy advisory says valid overseas employment for India-origin workers should be based on an employment/work visa or similar visa, not a tourist visa. For other origin-destination pairs, follow the destination authority’s rules for the particular occupation and visa route. If the recruiter says to enter as a tourist and start working, do not travel on that assurance.
Do not rely solely on a visa copy sent by the recruiter. Confirm visa or permit information with the authority responsible for issuing or verifying it, using independently found contact details. If you cannot authenticate the document, or if the visa category appears inconsistent with the work described, stop and ask the relevant authority or embassy/consulate to explain the route before paying for travel.
Stop if the checks do not line up
Pause before paying or departing if any essential detail cannot be independently confirmed. Warning signs include:
- The legal employer or actual worksite is unclear.
- The agency cannot be found in the relevant register, or the specific job cannot be confirmed where a job database exists.
- The recruiter insists on messaging-only contact or blocks you from speaking with the employer.
- The contract differs from the promised job, pay, employer, worksite, or visa.
- A document cannot be confirmed with the authority that supposedly issued it.
- A payment is urgent, unexplained, or routed to an individual account.
- You are told to enter on a tourist or visitor visa and work.
These indicators are not proof on their own, but they justify stopping until the facts are resolved. Contact your origin-country labour migration authority or embassy/consulate and the destination-country immigration or labour authority using contact information you locate independently. U.S. workers in covered temporary programs may also contact the U.S. Department of Labor; workers elsewhere should use the official channels that cover their route.

When you contact an authority, give a concise account of the route and the unresolved point: the legal employer and recruiter names, destination, job, proposed visa category, and any job-order identifier. Ask which agency is responsible for checking that particular issue and what source or record it accepts as confirmation. Keep the reply and any reference details with your other records. If an official channel cannot confirm the offer, do not treat silence or an inconclusive answer as approval.
Use a simple go/no-go rule: proceed only when the employer and recruiter are identifiable, the particular job and contract are consistent, the payment arrangements have been checked under the rules that apply, and the destination authority’s work-authorization route fits the job. If one of those essential pieces remains unresolved, wait. The cost of delaying a departure is preferable to arriving with an unverified job or a visa that does not permit the work you were promised.
Compare offers using the same evidence
If you have more than one overseas offer, assess each against the same checks. A higher salary or polished paperwork should not outweigh a failed verification. Make a comparison using evidence rather than the recruiter’s confidence or the visual quality of the documents.
| Check | What to confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Employer and worksite | Legal employer, address, and direct confirmation from an independently located contact | Establishes who is hiring and where the work will take place |
| Recruiter and job record | Agency licence where applicable, plus the specific job order or labour certification where the government provides a record | A valid agency licence alone does not authenticate an individual vacancy |
| Contract | Written, understandable terms consistent with the offer and visa documents | Surfaces changes to the job, pay, deductions, duration, or termination conditions |
| Money and travel | Pay, hours, deductions, recruitment charges, and responsibility for journey and return costs | Clarifies what you may owe and whether a payment request needs official verification |
| Work authorization | Visa or permit that permits the offered work for the employer and worksite under destination rules | Entry permission alone may not authorize employment |
| Independent confirmation | Whether relevant employers and authorities can confirm the details through independently found channels | Shows whether you can verify the offer without relying on the recruiter’s materials |
Compare the terms that affect the decision, not only the advertised wage. Look at the offered duties and worksite, the clarity of the written terms, listed deductions, recruitment or travel charges, and who is responsible for the journey and return costs. Record whether each employer, recruiter, and job record could be confirmed independently. A generous headline salary does not answer an unresolved question about the legal employer, fees, or work authorization.
If a detail is missing from one offer but confirmed for another, ask the first recruiter or employer for the same level of written clarity. Do not fill gaps with assumptions, and do not treat a polished contract as a substitute for official checks. If a difference between offers depends on local rules—such as a fee or licensing requirement—confirm those rules for the relevant country and program rather than comparing the offers as if one universal standard applied.
Keep records and make an emergency plan
Keep accessible copies of the signed contract, employer and recruiter details, visa or permit, payment receipts, and official verification correspondence. Share copies and your itinerary with someone you trust. Before departure, find the contact details for your country’s embassy or consulate in the destination.
Keep the records somewhere you can reach them while traveling, not only in a bag or account controlled by someone else. Include the contact details you used for official checks and the names of people who confirmed the offer. If the job, recruiter, or travel arrangement changes, compare the new information with your record and re-check any affected detail before departing.
ILO guidance says workers should have access to their passports. An employer holding a passport should be an exceptional safekeeping arrangement, and the worker should be able to retrieve and access it. Do not travel on the assumption that surrendering your passport is a routine condition of employment.
Use country-specific rules, not a one-size-fits-all checklist
Recruiter licensing, direct-hire rules, worker-paid costs, contract processes, visa conditions, and complaint channels vary by country, occupation, and program. The U.S. Department of Labor tools cover specified U.S. programs; India’s advisory concerns India-origin recruitment; and the IOM guide cited above addresses a Hong Kong domestic-worker hiring context. None is a universal registry or legal rule.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if an overseas job offer is real before I travel?
Identify the legal employer, recruiter, worksite, job, destination, and proposed visa category. Then check the recruiter and any job-order record through official sources you find independently, contact the employer through independently located details, compare the written contract with the offer and visa documents, and confirm work authorization with the destination authority. Do not pay or travel while an essential detail remains unverified.
How can I verify an overseas recruitment agency?
Find the relevant labour migration authority or recruiter-licensing register for your origin, destination, and program by navigating to official government websites yourself. Check the agency’s legal identity and licence where a register exists. Also verify the particular vacancy or job order when a government database is available: an agency licence alone does not establish that a specific job is genuine.
Is it safe to pay an agent for a job abroad?
Do not pay simply because an agent says a charge is standard or urgent. ILO fair-recruitment guidance says workers should not be charged recruitment fees or related costs, while also noting that governments may authorize exceptions in some circumstances. Check the applicable law and any exception with the relevant official authority before paying. A demand to pay an employer or intermediary to secure a job or visa is a serious warning sign.

Do not assume that a visitor or tourist visa permits employment. Confirm with the destination immigration authority that the visa or permit is genuine and authorizes the offered work under that country’s rules. If a recruiter tells you to enter as a tourist and work, stop and verify the arrangement before traveling.
What if the recruiter is licensed but I cannot find the job in a public database?
Those are separate checks. A licence may confirm something about the agency, but it does not by itself authenticate a vacancy. First confirm that a public job-order database applies to your country and program; not every route has one. If it does, ask the relevant authority how to verify the specific job. If it does not, confirm the offer directly with the employer and ask the labour migration authority or embassy/consulate which verification process applies.
What should I do if the contract does not match the offer?
Do not sign or travel on the assumption that the difference will be fixed later. Compare the employer, job title and duties, worksite, pay, deductions, duration, termination terms, travel costs, and visa arrangement. Ask the employer and recruiter to resolve the discrepancy in writing, and ask the relevant labour authority or embassy/consulate to explain any unclear term before departure.
What if I cannot independently verify a document or contact the employer?
Pause before paying or traveling. Find the issuing authority or employer contact independently rather than using only details in the recruiter’s message, then ask for confirmation. If the responsible authority is unclear or cannot confirm the information, contact your origin-country labour migration authority or embassy/consulate and the destination-country immigration or labour authority for guidance.
