One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchUse ffprobe to inspect the video stream and container, then compare the result with the YouTube guidance for your workflow: uploading a prerecorded file or sending a live encoder feed. They use different bitrate recommendations, so first establish which one you are preparing.
Check what the file actually contains
FFmpeg’s ffprobe reads media-stream and container information. In a terminal, run:
ffprobe -hide_banner -show_format -show_streams input.mp4
Replace input.mp4 with the file’s name or path. The output includes a section for each stream and a separate format section. Find the video stream and inspect its codec, frame-rate fields, dimensions, and bitrate if reported. Do not mistake the audio stream’s bitrate or the overall format bitrate for the video-stream bitrate.
Fields can be absent or represented differently depending on the file’s container and streams. If ffprobe does not report a video bitrate, do not infer one from the container’s overall bitrate. Record the value and field name as shown; bitrate alone is not a universal measure of picture quality or proof of the file’s encoding history. See the FFprobe documentation for details on its stream and format output.

Read the frame rate without rounding it
Frame rate may appear as a rational value, such as 30000/1001, rather than a decimal. That corresponds approximately to 29.97 frames per second. Preserve the reported rate instead of silently rounding it to 30. YouTube’s upload guidance says to use the frame rate at which the material was recorded; its troubleshooting guidance also recognizes rates such as 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 fps.
Identify the video codec and resolution
Check the video stream’s codec name and dimensions, then note whether the material is SDR or HDR. Those details matter when you consult YouTube’s recommendations: the upload figures vary by resolution, frame rate, and SDR/HDR, while live-ingestion figures vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Choose the right YouTube settings guidance
Before changing anything, decide whether you are uploading a completed video or streaming an encoder feed. YouTube’s upload recommendations are not interchangeable with its live-ingestion recommendations. The figures below are YouTube Help guidance accessed on October 3, 2026; the pages do not specify a publication year.
For a prerecorded upload
YouTube recommends encoding and uploading at the recording frame rate, progressive scan, and H.264 as the video codec. Its SDR bitrate examples include:

For a live encoder feed
YouTube’s live guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency that does not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example:
| Live codec | 1080p30 | 1080p60 |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are live-ingestion recommendations, not prerecorded-upload targets. Use the complete YouTube live encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for configurations not shown here; do not extrapolate a value from a different codec or frame rate. YouTube says, “YouTube will automatically detect which encoder settings you chose.” That does not remove the need to choose a suitable target and verify stream health.

Check whether the live setup can sustain the target
For a live stream, run an upload-speed test and leave bandwidth headroom rather than targeting the full measured connection rate. YouTube’s streaming tips advise leaving 20% headroom. Test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health while live. A static test image or silent feed may not reveal problems that appear with the real programme.
Use the live bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send, and confirm the connection can sustain it. A file’s reported bitrate describes that file’s stream or container as ffprobe presents it; it is not automatically the right live encoder setting.
Common inspection and setup problems
- The bitrate seems unexpectedly high or low: Check whether you are reading the video stream or the overall format, and confirm that you have not selected an audio stream. If no video bitrate is reported, treat it as unavailable rather than substituting the format value.
- The frame rate looks unfamiliar: It may be expressed as a fraction. Preserve the exact reported value; for example,
30000/1001is approximately 29.97 fps. - The recommended bitrate does not match the file’s bitrate: First check that you are comparing like with like—upload versus live, SDR versus HDR, and the same resolution and frame-rate range. The guidance is a recommended encoding target, not an analysis of how the source file was made.
- A live stream drops frames or becomes unstable: Recheck the selected live bitrate against sustained upload capacity, leave the recommended bandwidth headroom, and test with representative audio and motion. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test.
Copyright and reused material still matter
Checking technical properties does not establish that you have rights to the footage, music, or other material, and it does not determine whether a channel or stream meets YouTube’s reused-content or monetization rules. Verify rights and applicable YouTube policies separately before streaming a documentary, compilation, or looped programme. Technical compliance is not a substitute for permission or policy review.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video playing continuously on YouTube rather than operate a live encoder yourself, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See the upload-time calculator to estimate how long your file will take to upload. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.
