To change latency before going live, open YouTube Studio → Create → Go live, enter your stream details, choose Stream or Manage, then open Stream settings and select a mode under Stream latency. For a non-interactive 24/7 feed, Normal latency is usually the best choice: it supports all resolutions and live features and has the least viewer buffering of the three modes.
Change the latency setting before you start
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Enter the stream details.
- In the right-hand menu, select Stream or Manage.
- From the stream dashboard, open Stream settings.
- Under Stream latency, choose Normal latency, Low latency, or Ultra-low latency.
- Test the encoder feed, audio, and motion, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before starting.
The selectable latency setting is for encoder-based streams. Webcam and mobile streams are configured for interactivity and do not offer a selectable latency mode. YouTube defines stream latency as “the delay between your encoder or camera capturing an event and the event being shown on your stream.” See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Choose a mode for the kind of stream you are running
| Mode | Best fit | Viewer delay | Buffering and resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | Non-interactive continuous video, such as an ambience or information feed | No specific delay figure stated | Lowest viewer buffering among the modes; supports all resolutions and live features, including 4K |
| Low latency | Limited interaction, such as polls, when immediate replies are unnecessary | YouTube says most viewers experience under 10 seconds; this is guidance, not a guarantee | More buffering exposure than normal; does not support 4K |
| Ultra-low latency | Highly interactive, real-time conversation | YouTube says most viewers experience under five seconds; this is guidance, not a guarantee | Viewer buffering is more likely and network ingestion problems affect viewers more; does not support 4K |
For a documentary loop or other always-on feed where viewers are not relying on immediate chat responses, choose Normal latency unless a specific interactive feature justifies the trade-off. YouTube recommends normal latency when you do not plan to interact with the audience. Reducing delay leaves less read-ahead buffer to absorb network fluctuations, so a connection that meets its average bitrate can still experience congestion and playback interruptions.
Check bandwidth and preview before starting
Latency selection does not replace encoder and network checks. YouTube recommends upload capacity for the total stream bitrate plus 20% headroom. Check outbound upload speed rather than assuming it matches download speed. In the Live Control Room preview, verify that the picture, motion, and audio behave like the material you intend to stream, and monitor stream health. These checks help identify feed and connection problems; they do not guarantee a particular end-to-end delay.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Account for long-stream archiving and DVR
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast should therefore not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve the full run; keep a local archive if retaining the whole program matters. YouTube also notes DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If DVR is toggled while live, the change applies to viewers who begin playback after the change.
Check whether your ingest format allows ultra-low latency
If your encoder uses HLS ingestion, YouTube disables ultra-low latency. HLS sends the stream in segments and has higher latency, so the ultra-low option is not available for that ingest type. Check the ingest protocol and the options shown in Stream settings rather than assuming every encoder supports every mode.

Troubleshoot the latency choice
- You cannot find Stream latency: Confirm you are configuring an encoder-based stream in the Live Control Room. Webcam and mobile streams do not expose a selectable mode.
- Ultra-low latency is unavailable: If you use HLS ingestion, YouTube disables that mode. Select another available mode or use an ingest option supported by your setup.
- The stream buffers after lowering latency: Lower latency leaves less buffer for network variation. Recheck upload capacity against the total bitrate, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; if interaction does not require a shorter delay, use Normal latency.
- The preview has picture or audio problems: Test the encoder feed and audio before starting, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health. Resolve feed or connection problems before relying on the stream.
- You need a complete recording of a 24/7 run: Do not depend on YouTube’s automatic archive for a stream over 12 hours. Use a local archive if preserving the entire broadcast is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded video, StreamNeo can run the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
