How to Change Your Twitch Ingest Server (and When to Leave It Automatic)

Most encoders select a Twitch ingest server automatically. If you need to troubleshoot, try a nearby endpoint and verify the result with Twitch Inspector.

To change your Twitch server, change the ingest server or RTMP destination in your streaming encoder—if the encoder exposes that option. Most streaming software selects an appropriate server automatically, so leave automatic selection on unless you are troubleshooting. If you choose manually, try the server physically closest to you, then run a test broadcast and check it in Twitch Inspector.

What “Twitch server” means

In this context, “server” means the Twitch ingest server: the endpoint that receives your outgoing broadcast from the public internet. It is not your Twitch account’s region or a setting that changes which server viewers use for playback. Twitch describes the destination as part of an RTMP URL in this form: rtmp://TWITCH-INGEST-SERVER/app/STREAM-KEY (Twitch Stream Key FAQ).

The ingest endpoint and stream key are separate parts of the connection. The endpoint tells your encoder where to send the broadcast; the key identifies or authorizes the stream. Keep the key private and do not show it on stream or share it.

Should you change the ingest server?

Usually, no. Twitch says most streaming software and services choose an appropriate, usually nearby ingest server automatically. Manual selection is mainly useful as a troubleshooting test or when you have been given a specific endpoint (Guide to Using Twitch Inspector; Twitch Stream Key FAQ).

Choice When it makes sense What to check
Automatic selection Best for most broadcasters; the encoder or service selects an endpoint. Check the stream in Twitch Inspector if you are investigating instability.
Manual ingest server Worth testing when the current connection is unstable or a specific endpoint is required. Start with the server physically closest to your current location, then compare test results. A different network route may behave better, but this is not guaranteed.

How to change it in your encoder

  1. Find the stream destination control. Open your encoder’s stream, server, ingest, or RTMP destination settings. The label and location vary by application and version; the current Twitch help material does not provide a verified, version-specific click path for OBS or every other encoder.
  2. Leave automatic selection enabled unless you have a reason to test manually. If the encoder offers an automatic server option, this is the sensible starting point for most streams.
  3. If selecting manually, choose a nearby endpoint. Twitch advises using the server physically closest to you if you are unsure. Treat this as a starting point, not a guarantee that it will be the fastest or most stable route.
  4. Keep the stream key separate and protected. Do not replace or disclose it when changing the ingest endpoint. If you need to update a key, use Twitch’s account controls and then update it securely in your encoder.
  5. Run a test broadcast and inspect it. Twitch Inspector can show which Twitch server a broadcast used and identify unstable events. Use the test result to decide whether the manual endpoint actually helped rather than relying on the server name alone.

Test after changing location or internet provider

If you move or change internet service providers, the best route to Twitch may change. Twitch recommends testing the connection after either change. Begin with automatic selection; if the connection remains unstable, compare a nearby manual endpoint using a test broadcast and Twitch Inspector (Guide to Using Twitch Inspector).

If changing servers does not fix the stream

Switching ingest servers can sometimes help with a network-route problem, but it does not fix every cause of dropped frames, instability, latency, or playback trouble. If Inspector still reports problems, do not keep cycling through endpoints without comparing results. Check the broader broadcast and network conditions and use Twitch’s broadcast-health guidance as another troubleshooting reference: Twitch broadcast health.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • The stream is still unstable on multiple endpoints: the issue may be elsewhere in the connection or broadcast setup; an ingest change alone is not a diagnosis.
  • The encoder uses a different server than expected: automatic selection may be active. Confirm the endpoint reported by Twitch Inspector rather than assuming your encoder’s displayed option is the endpoint actually used.
  • You recently moved or changed ISP: test again from the new connection before settling on a manual endpoint.
  • You suspect the stream key is the problem: remember that the key and ingest endpoint are different URL components. Handle the key privately and verify the encoder’s stream credentials separately.
