You can change what plays next without restarting FFmpeg, but not by relying on a concat list file to hot-reload. FFmpeg’s documentation describes the concat demuxer as reading a list and processing its files sequentially; it does not promise that an already-running process will notice edits to that list. To keep a YouTube output session connected, separate video selection from publishing: use a scheduler or playout layer to feed the next compatible source into a stable output process.
Why editing a concat list may not change a running loop
The concat demuxer reads a text script that names files and processes them one after another, as though their packets had been muxed together. The documented behavior is sequential playback, not live playlist control. Replacing or appending to the script after FFmpeg has opened it is therefore not a dependable hot-reload method.
The right fix depends on what your process actually reads: a concat script, a single looping file, several inputs, or a separate playlist or service. The destination and exact command matter too. A YouTube Live RTMP publisher, an HLS output, and a local playback process do not necessarily have the same continuity requirements, so there is no universal command that can safely be dropped into every setup.
Choose an approach that separates selection from publishing

For a loop that must stay published
Keep the publishing connection and the source-selection logic as separate responsibilities. A scheduler or playout service can select the next clip and provide it to a stable publisher using a handoff appropriate to your setup. The exact mechanism depends on how the scheduler supplies media and how FFmpeg sends the stream; the available documentation does not establish one universal implementation or guarantee uninterrupted transitions for every destination.

When concat is still appropriate
Use concat when the sequence is known before processing and the inputs are prepared to be compatible. FFmpeg specifies that the files must have the same streams, codecs, and time base. That makes it useful for a defined sequence, but not a documented live playlist editor.
Prepare inputs and timelines to avoid broken transitions
- Match stream layouts. Check that each file has the same streams and compatible codecs and time bases before concatenating. Differences can prevent concat from working cleanly.
- Check duration metadata. Concat places each subsequent file according to the previous file’s duration. Incorrect duration information can cause timestamp artifacts; streams with different lengths can create gaps.
- Verify actual transitions. Test the handoff with the installed FFmpeg build and the real output destination. A playlist change that works in a local test may not preserve a live publishing session.
- If segmenting, plan keyframes. The segment muxer starts segments at suitable keyframes, so cuts may not land exactly where expected. FFmpeg says it works best with a single constant frame rate video; set and verify keyframes at the intended boundaries when exact segment cuts matter.
Do not mistake output recovery for playlist control
The FIFO pseudo-muxer can add queueing and attempt to recover from output failures. It does not choose a new input video or make an open concat list reload. Use it only if output-side failure handling is part of the problem, not as a substitute for a scheduler.

Verify behavior against your installed FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly and describes the newest revision, which may differ from the build on your server. Check the documentation and available options for the installed version before implementing a workflow. Record the current command, input type, FFmpeg build, and destination; then test the source handoff and output continuity under those actual conditions.
Troubleshoot a playlist change that does not take effect
- Editing the list has no effect: The running process may already have read the script. Treat that as expected unless your specific implementation documents live reload; use a scheduler or playout layer for dynamic source choice.
- Concat fails or the transition is malformed: Compare streams, codecs, and time bases across files. Normalize inputs to a compatible layout before concatenating.
- A gap or timestamp artifact appears: Check duration information and whether audio and video streams end at different times.
- A segment begins later than expected: Inspect keyframe placement. Segment boundaries align to suitable keyframes rather than necessarily matching an arbitrary requested time.
- The output reconnects or fails: Investigate the output path and destination separately from playlist selection. FIFO can help with output recovery scenarios, but it will not select the next clip.
