If your recorded lecture is streaming on YouTube, open the specific broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and use its Edit settings to change the title. For the thumbnail, inspect the stream’s Customize or details controls; YouTube documents a custom-thumbnail option during setup, but does not guarantee the same control is available for every stream state. Save, then check the public watch page.
The steps below assume YouTube. If your stream is on another platform, its controls will differ. A 24/7 stream has no separate documented metadata workflow: the right route depends on whether you are editing a scheduled broadcast, an active stream, or a completed archive.
Change a scheduled YouTube lecture stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
- In Live Control Room, open Manage and select the scheduled stream you want to update. Confirm the lecture and broadcast details so you do not edit a different event.
- Select Edit. Update the title and any other metadata fields shown for that stream, then inspect Customize or the available stream details for the thumbnail control.
- If the thumbnail control is available, add the lecture’s custom thumbnail and save the changes. YouTube’s production guide documents adding a custom 16:9 thumbnail during setup, but the control’s label and availability can vary by stream state.
- Open the public watch page and verify the title and thumbnail. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not establish a fixed refresh time across all surfaces, so check the result rather than assuming it appears immediately everywhere.
YouTube’s Help guidance says stream metadata can be set at creation or changed through Edit in stream settings. Its current Live Control Room guidance also directs creators to Manage for scheduled streams. Manage live stream settings and Get started with live streaming.
If the stream is already live
Open the exact active broadcast in Live Control Room or find its video details in Studio. Inspect the available stream settings and choose Edit if shown. YouTube’s guidance refers to changing encoder or mobile stream metadata through Edit, but it does not explicitly guarantee that every title and thumbnail field remains editable for every active encoder configuration. If a control is absent, the official guidance reviewed here does not establish a universally available alternate route for changing that active broadcast.

After saving any available edit, check the public watch page. Do not promise viewers a particular update delay; YouTube’s guidance gives no fixed propagation time for every surface.
If you mean a completed archive
Find the past stream in YouTube Studio’s Live or content listing, open its video details, and check which title and thumbnail fields are available for that archived video. The official production guide distinguishes current, upcoming, and past streams, but archive controls may differ from those for a scheduled event or active encoder broadcast. Plan separately if you need a complete recording of a continuous broadcast. The Google/YouTube production guide advises teams to record streams longer than 12 hours themselves and manually upload an archive if needed. That guide’s duration-specific caution is not a guarantee of current automatic archive behavior for every account or setup.
Make the title and thumbnail useful to lecture viewers
Put the subject first
Google/YouTube’s live streaming guide advises leading with the key topic and context, noting that some YouTube surfaces may truncate titles after the first 60 characters. For a lecture, put the course or subject and session context first; add a date or lecturer only when it helps viewers identify the recording. Google/YouTube live streaming guide.

Represent the lecture accurately
Use a clear, high-contrast thumbnail that reflects the actual lecture. Keep any text readable at small sizes and avoid imagery that suggests a different topic. Google/YouTube’s guide recommends an accurate thumbnail that remains distinguishable among a creator’s uploads; these are editorial guidelines, not a guarantee of more views.
What not to change
- Do not reset the stream key to change the title or thumbnail. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential/address used to send the encoder feed. Viewer-facing metadata is managed in the stream settings; the key is not the title or thumbnail control. See Manage live stream settings.
- Do not assume scheduled and active streams expose identical controls. Select the correct broadcast and inspect its actual Edit or details panel.
- Do not treat “24/7” as a promise of one complete archive. If the whole broadcast must be preserved, make a separate recording plan.
- Do not use a misleading title or thumbnail. Make the packaging accurately identify the lecture.
