On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Apps > TV; on Apple TV 4K, go to Settings > Apps > TV > Streaming Video Quality; and on Mac or Windows, open the Apple TV app’s Playback settings. To prevent mobile streaming charges on iPhone or iPad, turn off Use Cellular Data. Menu labels and options can vary by device and software version.
The right choice depends on whether you care most about picture quality, limiting data use, or keeping playback reliable on your connection. Streaming and downloads have separate controls, so changing one does not necessarily change the other. Apple does not publish a universal gigabytes-per-hour figure for each setting; treat labels such as Data Saver and Good as relative choices, not guaranteed data allowances.
Change streaming quality on your device
Apple documentation refers to the service’s playback controls as settings for the Apple TV app. These settings also apply when you use that app to watch Apple TV+. The available choices differ by platform, and a quality preference is not a promise that every video will play at a fixed resolution. Start with the device you use to watch: settings on an iPhone or iPad are in the system Settings app, Apple TV 4K has its own Settings app, and Mac and Windows use playback controls inside the Apple TV app.
Before changing a setting, decide which connection you want to manage. A Wi-Fi quality preference addresses streaming over Wi-Fi, while a cellular control addresses mobile-network use on iPhone or iPad. Downloads are a separate activity with separate quality and cellular options. Keeping these distinctions in mind helps avoid changing a setting that does not affect the kind of data use you want to control.

iPhone or iPad
- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps > TV.
- Under streaming options, choose the controls for Wi-Fi or Cellular.
- For Wi-Fi, choose High Quality for image quality or Data Saver to reduce file size.
- For cellular streaming, choose Automatic where available, or switch off Use Cellular Data to block streaming over the mobile network.
Turning off cellular streaming does not change the Wi-Fi quality choice. The controls displayed depend on the device and software version. Apple describes High Quality as requiring a faster connection and using more data than Data Saver. If you regularly watch on Wi-Fi but want to avoid mobile streaming charges, you can choose a Wi-Fi quality separately and turn off cellular use. If you choose Automatic for cellular where that option appears, you are choosing an automatic quality option rather than disabling cellular streaming altogether.
These settings do not imply that High Quality will always deliver a particular resolution. Apple says compatible devices play the best quality available for the device and internet connection; a slower connection can result in a lower-quality version. High Quality is therefore most useful when the connection and data allowance can support it and picture quality is your priority. Data Saver is the more suitable Wi-Fi choice when reducing file size matters more than maximizing image quality.
Apple’s guide to changing Apple TV app settings covers streaming and download choices for Apple devices. If an option in the guide does not appear on your device, remember that Apple says the controls shown can depend on the device and software version.
Apple TV 4K
- Open Settings on Apple TV 4K.
- Choose Apps > TV.
- Open Streaming Video Quality.
- Choose Best, Better, or Good.
Best selects the best available quality for the television and connection. Better means HD and uses more data; Good means SD and uses less. These labels make the trade-off clear: Good is the lower-data option, Better provides HD at a higher data cost, and Best asks the device to select the best quality available for its television and connection. Best does not override connection limits or guarantee that a title will play at a specific resolution.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose Good if your priority is reducing streaming data and SD is acceptable. Better is the stated HD option, while Best is intended to select the best available quality rather than fix every stream at one level. Consider both the television and network when choosing: Apple’s description of Best explicitly refers to the quality available for the television and connection. Some options may depend on Apple TV hardware model or region. See Apple’s Apple TV settings guide.
Mac
- Open the Apple TV app.
- From the menu bar, choose TV > Settings > Playback.
- Under Streaming Options, choose High Quality (Up to 4K) or Data Saver.
High Quality streams the highest quality available, including HDR when available. Data Saver selects the best available quality at the lowest file size. The two options frame the same basic choice as on other platforms: prioritize the highest available picture quality or reduce the file size. “Up to 4K” describes the option’s ceiling, not a promise that every title or playback session will be 4K.
Mac download options are separate from streaming and include High Quality up to 1080p, Fast Downloads, and compatibility choices for HD (1080p) or SD (480p). These download options should not be confused with the streaming menu: changing streaming quality does not itself select download quality. Apple provides platform instructions in its Apple TV app playback settings guide.
Windows
- Open the Apple TV app and select the Sidebar Actions button.
- Choose Settings > Playback.
- Under streaming quality, choose Data Saver or High Quality (Up to 4K).
On Windows, the relevant streaming choices are in the app’s Playback settings rather than the system’s general display settings. Data Saver is the option to choose when minimizing file size is the priority; High Quality (Up to 4K) prioritizes the highest quality available. Actual playback still depends on the content, device, and connection. Windows download-quality controls are separate from streaming settings. For the current Windows app steps, consult Apple’s playback settings guide for Windows.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > TV and turn off Use Cellular Data. This prevents Apple TV app streaming over a cellular connection; it does not prevent Wi-Fi streaming. It also does not change the Wi-Fi quality selection, so you can manage mobile streaming and Wi-Fi data use independently.

If you want to allow cellular streaming but reduce how aggressively it uses data, check whether your device offers Automatic for cellular. The controls shown vary by device; Apple identifies Automatic as an available cellular quality choice on supported devices. To block mobile streaming rather than make an automatic quality choice, turn off Use Cellular Data.
Check downloads separately. If the cellular download option remains enabled, videos may still use mobile data when downloaded even though cellular streaming is disabled. Apple provides separate controls for streaming and downloads, so turn off cellular downloads too if you want to keep all Apple TV app video transfers on Wi-Fi. This distinction matters if you use offline viewing: disabling cellular streaming alone does not establish that downloads are Wi-Fi-only.
Reduce data use without confusing streaming and downloads
For live streaming
Choose Data Saver for Wi-Fi on iPhone or iPad, or in Mac and Windows Playback settings. On Apple TV 4K, choose Good for SD playback, which Apple says uses less data than Better (HD). These are relative quality settings, not published data allowances. They are useful when you want to make a lower-data choice, but Apple does not attach a fixed number of gigabytes to each label in the reviewed device guides.

High Quality is the opposite trade-off: it prioritizes image quality and can use more data. On Apple TV 4K, Better is explicitly HD and uses more data than Good, which is SD. On iPhone or iPad, Apple says High Quality uses more data and needs a faster connection than Data Saver. The exact relationship between a setting label and the stream you receive is not a promise of a fixed resolution or bitrate.
Apple does not publish a universal gigabytes-per-hour rate for each quality choice in the device guides. Actual data use depends on the content, playback quality, connection, and device; there is no official fixed figure to apply to every viewer. This means a generic data-per-hour calculator or one viewer’s estimate cannot be treated as an Apple-published guarantee for your device or title. If you need to limit usage, choose a lower-data preference and, on iPhone or iPad, disable cellular streaming rather than relying on an assumed hourly amount.
Data Saver also does not mean that playback will always use one defined low resolution. Apple describes it as reducing file size or providing the best available quality at the lowest file size, depending on platform. It is a preference for lower data use; the device and connection continue to affect the quality that can play.
For downloads
Download quality is controlled separately from streaming quality. On iPhone or iPad, cellular downloads can be disabled independently. Choosing High Quality rather than Fast Downloads uses more data and takes longer. Each additional audio language increases the download size. On supported iPhone and iPad versions, Automatic Downloads can fetch the next two episodes of a series started from Continue Watching.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor an offline-viewing plan, consider three separate factors: whether downloads are allowed over cellular, the quality selected for downloads, and how much local storage is available. Apple’s device guides do not give a fixed file size for an episode, so there is no universal storage amount to budget per download. They do establish the direction of the trade-off: higher-quality downloads use more data and take longer, and extra audio languages increase file size. Fast Downloads favors time over the High Quality option.
Automatic Downloads can be convenient if you want the next episodes of a series already in Continue Watching, but they are still downloads rather than streaming. On supported iPhone and iPad versions, the feature can download the next two episodes. If you are trying to limit mobile data, review the cellular download control as well as the streaming control; if you are trying to manage storage, remember that automatically fetched episodes also occupy local space.

On Mac, download controls include High Quality up to 1080p, Fast Downloads, and compatibility settings for HD (1080p) and SD (480p). Downloads use local storage, so a higher-quality file or extra audio languages also mean more space is needed on the device. These Mac download labels describe download choices, not the Mac streaming options of High Quality (Up to 4K) and Data Saver.
On Windows, download-quality settings are also separate from the streaming quality menu. If a video is being downloaded, changing the streaming selection is not a substitute for checking the download settings. The same practical rule applies on each platform: select the streaming preference for playback over a connection, then check download quality and cellular permissions separately when saving a title for offline viewing.
What determines the quality you actually see?
The selected option is a preference, not a guaranteed resolution. Apple says compatible devices automatically play the best quality available for the device and internet connection. When the connection is too slow, Apple devices can switch automatically to a lower-quality version. As a result, choosing a high-quality setting cannot make a slow or unstable connection deliver a fixed maximum resolution. Nor does a quality label establish that every title is available in that format.
For 4K, the television or display and playback device must support the relevant format, and Apple advises keeping software current. Apple Support recommends a minimum internet speed of 25 Mbps for 4K streaming. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee of 4K playback, a stream bitrate, or a data-per-hour amount. Network congestion and other conditions can still affect playback. See Apple’s guidance on finding 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos content.
Use 25 Mbps as a reference for Apple’s 4K recommendation rather than as a promise that a connection at that speed will always play 4K. The recommendation does not state how much data a particular movie or episode will consume. Actual quality can still vary with the connection and compatible equipment, and Apple devices may lower playback quality when the connection is too slow. High Quality (Up to 4K) and Best are therefore best read as preferences or maximum-capability labels, not guaranteed outcomes.
If a picture appears lower quality than expected, check the setting, but also consider the conditions Apple identifies: device and display support, software currency, title availability, and connection speed. A lower-quality stream can be the device’s response to a connection that cannot sustain better playback. A setting change alone cannot remove those constraints.
Which setting should you choose?
| Goal | Setting to use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Avoid cellular streaming charges on iPhone or iPad | Turn off Use Cellular Data | Streaming is limited to Wi-Fi; cellular downloads require their own control. |
| Reduce streaming data over Wi-Fi | Data Saver on iPhone/iPad, Mac, or Windows; Good on Apple TV 4K | Lower file size or SD quality can mean a less detailed picture. |
| Prioritize picture quality | High Quality or High Quality (Up to 4K); Best on Apple TV 4K | Higher quality may use more data and needs a sufficiently fast connection and compatible display. |
| Balance cellular quality with data use | Automatic for cellular where the iPhone or iPad offers it | The available choice depends on device and software; disable cellular entirely to prevent mobile streaming. |
| Save mobile data but keep offline viewing | Disable cellular streaming and cellular downloads separately | Downloads over Wi-Fi may take longer, especially at High Quality. |
For a simple low-data setup, choose Data Saver on the platform where you stream and block cellular streaming on iPhone or iPad if you do not want video to use mobile data. If you also download shows, disable cellular downloads separately and select a download option with the time and quality trade-off you prefer. For better picture quality, choose the platform’s high-quality option, but keep the connection and compatible equipment in mind.
There is no single best setting for everyone. A viewer with a limited data allowance may prefer Data Saver, Good, or Wi-Fi-only use. Someone prioritizing picture quality may choose High Quality, Best, or Better when the device and connection support it. Someone who wants episodes available offline should treat download quality, download time, language tracks, and local storage as a separate set of decisions from live streaming.

- Look in the platform-specific location. iPhone and iPad use the system Settings app; Apple TV 4K has its own Settings app; Mac and Windows use Playback in the Apple TV app.
- Check downloads separately. A streaming restriction does not automatically change download permissions or download quality.
- Expect option differences. Apple says some choices depend on the device; Apple TV 4K availability can also vary by model and region.
- Do not assume a quality label forces 4K. Device compatibility, the title’s available formats, software, and connection conditions determine the stream that can actually play.
If a menu path does not match what you see, first confirm which device and app you are using, then consult the Apple guide for that platform. Apple’s instructions are device- and software-specific and may change. On iPhone or iPad, the documented current location is Settings > Apps > TV; on Mac and Windows, the controls are in Playback settings in the Apple TV app; and on Apple TV 4K, look under Settings > Apps > TV.

If data use continues after selecting a lower-data streaming option, verify whether the app is streaming or downloading. On iPhone or iPad, check cellular streaming and cellular downloads independently. On Mac and Windows, distinguish Playback streaming options from the separate download controls. Finally, remember that lower-data settings are relative preferences: Apple’s reviewed documentation does not specify a guaranteed amount of data saved or a per-hour usage figure.
Apple TV 4K is not required to change Apple TV+ quality. It is simply one of the devices with its own Streaming Video Quality menu. If you already watch on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows, use the settings for that device rather than buying hardware to access playback controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change Apple TV+ streaming quality on an iPhone or iPad?
Open Settings > Apps > TV. Under the streaming options, choose Wi-Fi or Cellular. For Wi-Fi, select High Quality or Data Saver. Cellular choices vary by device; where available, choose Automatic, or turn off Use Cellular Data to block cellular streaming.
How can I stop Apple TV+ from using cellular data?
On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Apps > TV and turn off Use Cellular Data. If you also want to prevent downloads from using mobile data, disable cellular downloads separately; streaming and download controls are distinct.
Does Data Saver guarantee a particular resolution or number of gigabytes per hour?
No. Apple describes Data Saver as reducing file size or providing the best available quality at the lowest file size, depending on platform. Apple’s device guides do not publish a universal gigabytes-per-hour rate or promise a fixed resolution for that setting.
What is the difference between Good, Better, and Best on Apple TV 4K?
Good is SD and uses less data; Better is HD and uses more. Best selects the best quality available for the television and connection. None of these labels guarantees a particular resolution in every playback session.
What internet speed does Apple recommend for 4K streaming?
Apple recommends a minimum speed of 25 Mbps for 4K streaming. It is a recommendation, not a guarantee of 4K playback or a statement of the stream’s bitrate or data use.
Will changing streaming quality also change my downloads?
No. Streaming and downloads have separate settings. On iPhone or iPad, cellular downloads can be disabled independently. High Quality downloads use more data and take longer than Fast Downloads, and additional audio languages increase download size.
The Bottom Line
Use the quality controls for the device where you watch: Data Saver (or Good on Apple TV 4K) to reduce streaming data, and High Quality or Best to prioritize picture quality. On iPhone or iPad, turn off cellular streaming—and check cellular downloads separately—if you want to keep video transfers off mobile data. Settings are preferences, not guarantees: connection speed and compatible equipment affect playback, and Apple does not publish a universal data-per-hour figure for each option.
