The Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition by Skydance/Paramount closed on October 6, 2026, but the completion announcement did not set a subscriber migration date or announce changed bills or cancellation steps. A corporate merger does not automatically move your subscription: check the billing provider on your account or payment statement, then cancel with that provider.
What the merger means for your subscription
Skydance announced that its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery was complete on October 6, 2026. The announcement described HBO and Paramount+ as two global streaming services in the combined company’s portfolio. It did not say that subscribers must merge accounts, change plans, or use a new cancellation process. Read the completion announcement.
The practical rule is unchanged: the company or platform that bills you controls cancellation. A Paramount+ or HBO Max account may be billed directly by the streaming service, or through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Roku, Prime Video Channels, or another provider. Cancel through the billing party shown for your subscription rather than assuming the merger changes where the control lives.
That distinction matters because the service you watch and the company that processes the subscription may not be the same. You might open the HBO Max or Paramount+ app to watch, while a platform or provider handles renewals and cancellation. The deal announcement concerns ownership and the combined portfolio; it does not identify the billing route for any individual customer. Use your own account details, rather than the merger news, to decide where to cancel.

As of the October 6 completion announcement reviewed for this guide, no subscriber migration date, required combined plan, subscriber-specific price change, or new cancellation rule was stated. That is a narrow description of what that announcement says, not a promise that plans or procedures will never change. Before acting on a later merger-related notice, check that it is current and applies to your subscription and billing provider.
Find out who bills you
Start with the subscription record, not the app icon on your television or phone. Identify the service name, the billing provider shown, and the account or platform through which you signed up. The cancellation route depends on that provider. If you check one place and the subscription is not listed there, that does not by itself mean you have no subscription; you may be looking at a different Apple ID, Google account, Amazon account, Roku account, or provider.
HBO Max
Sign in at HBOMax.com/subscription, or open the app and go to your profile and Subscription settings. The subscription screen identifies the billing provider. If you cannot find it there, check the payment statement or ask your internet, mobile, or TV provider. HBO Max’s cancellation help page explains how to identify the provider.
Use the provider shown on the subscription screen as your starting point. If it identifies HBO Max as the direct billing party, use the HBO Max subscription page to cancel. If it names Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Roku, or another partner, that partner’s subscription controls are the relevant place to look. HBO Max lists TV, mobile, internet, and other partners as possible billing providers, so the list is not limited to app stores.
Paramount+
Check your Paramount+ account and how you signed up. The official Paramount+ cancellation instructions separate direct subscriptions from those billed through Apple, Google Play, Amazon/Fire TV, Roku, Prime Video Channels, and Apple TV Channels. If the account does not make the billing route clear, look at your payment statement or the subscription settings for the platform where you enrolled.
Paramount+ also points subscribers to different instructions for different signup routes. A subscription made through Prime Video Channels, for example, is a channel subscription managed in Prime Video’s controls; it is not the same as a directly billed Paramount+ account. Likewise, an Apple-billed Paramount+ subscription needs to be checked under the Apple ID used to subscribe. The important clue is the billing route associated with the actual subscription, not simply which app you use to watch.

Cancel through the billing provider
Use the row that matches the billing party shown in your account. Menu names can vary by device or platform; follow that provider’s subscription controls, not just the streaming app. If you have both services, check each one separately: they can have different billing providers, even if you watch them on the same device or use the same email address.
| Billing route | Where to cancel |
|---|---|
| HBO Max, billed directly | Open HBOMax.com/subscription, sign in, select “Cancel Your Subscription,” and confirm. |
| Paramount+, billed directly | Visit Paramountplus.com, open the username menu, choose Account, then select “Cancel subscription.” |
| Apple | Open Subscriptions in the Apple ID settings for the account used to subscribe and cancel the relevant service. |
| Google Play | Open Play Store subscription controls and cancel the relevant subscription. |
| Amazon Appstore or Fire TV | Use Amazon’s appstore subscription controls to cancel or turn off renewal. |
| Prime Video Channels | Cancel the channel in Prime Video’s subscription or channel settings, not in the standalone streaming-service account. |
| Roku | Use Roku’s subscription controls or the device’s manage-subscription screen. |
| Another provider | Cancel through that provider’s account page or support channel. HBO Max identifies TV, mobile, internet, and other partners as possible billing providers. |
For direct HBO Max billing, the described route is to sign in to the subscription page, choose “Cancel Your Subscription,” and confirm. For direct Paramount+ billing, open the username menu on Paramountplus.com, go to Account, and choose “Cancel subscription.” Follow the on-screen prompts until the provider confirms the change. Do not treat reaching the cancellation page, closing the app, or removing a payment method as proof that the cancellation went through.

If you have more than one Apple ID, check the one tied to the subscription. For Google Play billing, use Play Store subscription controls and locate the relevant service. Paramount+ specifically warns that uninstalling its Android TV app does not cancel service; app removal and subscription management are separate actions.
For an Amazon Appstore or Fire TV subscription, use Amazon’s appstore subscription controls. If the subscription is a Prime Video Channel, use Prime Video’s subscription or channel settings instead of the standalone Paramount+ or HBO Max account. Roku-billed subscriptions are managed through Roku’s subscription controls or the device’s manage-subscription screen. These routes are not interchangeable: choose according to the billing provider your account identifies.
If another company bills you—for example, a TV, mobile, or internet provider—use that company’s account page or support channel. The streaming service may not be able to cancel a subscription it does not bill directly. If you are unsure which route applies, return to the account’s subscription screen or inspect the payment statement before contacting support.
If you cannot sign in to Paramount+, its help page directs customers to Help Center chat. If an HBO Max cancellation control is missing, first check the billing provider displayed on the subscription screen; the streaming service may not manage a subscription billed elsewhere. A missing control is a reason to verify the billing route, not a reason to assume the subscription has ended.

Confirm cancellation and keep access details
- Finish the provider’s cancellation flow. Follow the prompts through the final confirmation; closing a page before confirming may leave the subscription active. If the provider presents a final confirmation step, complete it rather than stopping after selecting a cancel option.
- Save proof. Keep the confirmation email or take a screenshot, and note the expiration date shown. HBO Max says it sends confirmation for several of its listed billing routes. The exact confirmation experience can depend on who bills you, so keep whatever record the relevant provider supplies.
- Check renewal status. Paramount+ says that if “Cancel Subscription” is absent in Apple’s subscription controls, the subscription is already cancelled and will not renew. For other routes, check the status or date displayed by the provider that manages the subscription.
For direct HBO Max subscriptions, cancellation stops the next renewal, while streaming remains available until the subscription expires at the end of the billing period. Paramount+ terms say direct recurring subscriptions generally remain usable until cancellation takes effect at the billing-period end. Third-party billing routes may have different timing, so use the expiration or renewal information shown by your provider. Paramount+ U.S. Terms of Use.
In practical terms, cancelling and losing access immediately are not necessarily the same event for a directly billed plan. HBO Max says direct subscribers can stream through the end of the paid billing period. Paramount+’s U.S. terms say direct recurring subscriptions generally remain usable until cancellation takes effect at the period’s end. Do not assume that timing applies identically to every Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Roku, channel, or provider-billed plan; check the information shown during cancellation and in the provider’s account controls.
Keep the confirmation and expiration details until you have checked that the account will not renew. If the date or status shown is unclear, go back to the billing party’s subscription controls or contact that provider. The service’s name on your screen may not identify the company that can resolve a billing or renewal question.
Deleting the app will not cancel the subscription
Removing an app from a phone, TV, or streaming device does not cancel the account or stop billing. HBO Max explicitly says deleting its app does not cancel a subscription; Paramount+ gives the same warning about uninstalling its Android TV app. Cancel with the billing provider first, then remove the app if you no longer want it.

Deleting an app does not complete the direct cancellation steps, and it does not replace cancellation through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Roku, Prime Video Channels, or another provider. If your goal is to stop a renewal, use the matching subscription control and verify the resulting status.
What has—and has not—been announced
The September 30, 2026 announcement said the transaction was expected to close on October 6, subject to customary conditions; the October 6 completion release is the current deal-status announcement. The post-close release confirms the combined ownership and identifies HBO and Paramount+ in the portfolio, but it does not specify an account migration date, a combined-plan requirement, a subscriber-specific price change, or new cancellation rules. Those details should not be treated as announced unless the company issues a newer subscriber notice. The Associated Press also reported the deal’s completion on October 6, 2026: AP coverage.

The earlier anticipated-close announcement has been superseded for the question of whether the deal closed: Skydance announced completion on October 6. That change in deal status does not answer what will happen to a particular account. The completion release establishes the combined ownership and describes two global streaming services in the portfolio; it does not provide an individual customer’s billing details or new steps for cancelling.
For now, the reader-facing takeaway is specific: use the existing billing provider shown on your subscription, and check official subscriber communications for any later changes. The post-close announcement reviewed here did not specify a migration date, requirement to combine plans, subscriber-specific price changes, or new cancellation procedures. It would be inaccurate to present any of those possibilities as an announced change—or to claim that they can never happen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cancel Paramount+ or HBO Max now that the merger is complete?
Yes. The acquisition was announced as complete on October 6, 2026, and the completion announcement does not say subscribers must wait to cancel. Cancel through the company or platform that bills your subscription.
Does the merger automatically combine my Paramount+ and HBO Max accounts?
The completion announcement reviewed here does not specify an account migration date or require subscribers to combine accounts. Check for a newer official subscriber notice before relying on any later change.
Will my bill or cancellation process change because of the merger?
The post-close announcement does not specify changed bills, subscriber-specific price changes, or new cancellation rules. It confirms the combined ownership and portfolio, not a change to your individual subscription.
How do I find who bills my HBO Max subscription?
Sign in at HBOMax.com/subscription or open the app’s profile and Subscription settings; the subscription screen identifies the billing provider. If needed, check your payment statement or ask your internet, mobile, or TV provider.

How do I find who bills my Paramount+ subscription?
Check the Paramount+ account and the platform where you signed up. Its cancellation instructions cover direct billing and routes including Apple, Google Play, Amazon/Fire TV, Roku, Prime Video Channels, and Apple TV Channels. A payment statement or the relevant platform’s subscription settings can help identify the route.
Why can’t I cancel inside the streaming app?
The app may not be the company that bills the subscription. If Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Roku, Prime Video Channels, or another provider handles billing, use that provider’s subscription controls. Check the billing provider shown in your account before contacting the streaming service.
If I delete the app, will the subscription stop renewing?
No. HBO Max says deleting its app does not cancel a subscription, and Paramount+ says uninstalling its Android TV app does not cancel service. Cancel through the billing provider and verify the status.
Will I lose access as soon as I cancel?
Not necessarily. HBO Max says direct subscribers can stream until the subscription expires at the end of the billing period. Paramount+ terms say direct recurring subscriptions generally remain usable until cancellation takes effect at the period’s end. Third-party plans may have different timing, so check the billing provider’s displayed expiration or renewal details.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I keep after cancelling?
Save the confirmation email or take a screenshot, and note the expiration date or renewal status shown. HBO Max says it sends confirmation for several listed billing routes. Confirmation details and timing can vary by billing provider.
What if the cancellation option is missing?
First verify who bills the subscription. A streaming service may not manage a subscription billed through another platform or provider. Paramount+ says that if “Cancel Subscription” is absent in Apple’s controls, the subscription is already cancelled and will not renew; do not apply that specific indicator to other billing routes without checking their controls.
The Bottom Line
The merger announcement does not itself change how you cancel. Find the billing provider for each subscription, cancel through that provider’s controls, and keep confirmation and expiration details. Deleting the app is not cancellation, and the October 6, 2026 announcement reviewed here did not specify subscriber migration, new cancellation rules, or changed bills.
