A speed-test peak is not a guarantee: test the actual stream under conditions like the planned broadcast and monitor stream health.
What bitrate means for your stream
Video bitrate is the amount of data your encoder sends each second, usually expressed in kilobits per second (kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps). A higher bitrate can preserve more detail, especially in fast-moving footage, but it also needs more upload capacity and can increase encoding demands. The best setting is not the highest one available; it is a platform-supported setting your connection and encoder can sustain reliably.
Bitrate recommendations are specific to the destination’s ingest system. YouTube and Twitch publish different settings, so do not copy one platform’s recommendation to the other. Check the current guidance again before a broadcast because supported codecs and recommendations can change: YouTube Live encoder settings and Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines.
Calculate a bitrate your connection can sustain
- Choose the platform and ingest codec. Find the destination’s recommendation for your codec, resolution and frame rate. If the platform specifies minimum and recommended values separately, treat them as different things: a minimum is not a quality target.
- Pick a resolution and frame rate you can maintain. Higher resolutions and frame rates generally call for more bitrate and increase the work required of the encoder. If your connection or computer cannot sustain the combination, reduce the resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test again.
- Measure upload capacity, not download speed. Check the connection repeatedly under conditions representative of your broadcast. Account for other devices or applications using upload bandwidth; a brief speed-test peak may not be consistently available to your encoder.
- Leave headroom. Twitch’s FAQ gives upload capacity at least 30% above the configured stream bitrate as general practice. By that rule, a 6 Mbps stream calls for at least 8 Mbps upload capacity. Twitch’s separate Sports explainer, published March 19, 2020, recommends keeping broadcast bitrate at or below 80% of consistent upload bandwidth. These are platform rules of thumb, not interchangeable guarantees; check current platform guidance and validate your own connection. Twitch streaming FAQ · Twitch Sports guide (2020).
- Test the whole setup. Make a test stream with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast. Watch the platform’s stream-health indicators and your encoder’s statistics. If the feed is unstable, lower the bitrate or reduce resolution or frame rate, then test again.
The two Twitch headroom suggestions use different formulations and come from different Twitch materials. Neither promises stability in every network or setup. Twitch emphasizes that a stable stream is preferable to pushing quality until dropped frames or connection limits appear.

Platform settings: use the destination’s table
YouTube Live: RTMP/RTMPS recommendations
YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, retrieved October 3, 2026, gives these recommended bitrates for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. They are platform recommendations, not universal targets.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 4K / 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 4K / 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
YouTube lists minimums separately from recommendations. For 1080p60, for example, its listed minimum is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264; its recommended values are 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively. Do not use a minimum as though it were the recommended setting. YouTube also recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and up to 60 fps. See the YouTube live encoder settings for current guidance.

Twitch: example encoder settings
Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines give these example settings. They are Twitch examples, not substitutes for YouTube’s ingest recommendations.
| Resolution and frame rate | Example bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6,000 kbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4,500 kbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 4,500 kbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3,000 kbps |
The examples specify CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Encoder choice also matters: Twitch notes that x264 uses CPU resources, while NVENC uses a dedicated GPU encoder. If encoding strain or dropped frames appear, reduce the load or choose a lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate rather than forcing a setting the system cannot sustain. Consult Twitch’s current Broadcasting Guidelines.

Diagnose an unstable stream
- Dropped frames or an unhealthy feed: Your upload may be inconsistent, shared by other devices, or too close to the stream’s bitrate. Reduce bitrate or lower resolution or frame rate, then repeat a representative test.
- Good download speed but weak stream stability: Download speed does not establish available upload capacity. Measure upload under broadcast-like conditions and leave headroom.
- Encoder strain: The chosen resolution, frame rate or codec may exceed what the computer can encode reliably. Lower the output demands and test again; Twitch notes that x264 and NVENC use different processing resources.
- Settings copied from another platform: Recheck the destination’s own ingest guidance, including codec, rate control and keyframe interval. Platform settings are not interchangeable.
- Test looks fine but a real event does not: Include realistic movement and audio in the test, consider household or workplace upload use, and keep monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
