Before broadcasting, verify that you have the rights for the music and that any required Content ID allowlisting is in place.
What you need before setting up the rotation
- OBS Studio to assemble the scene and send the live feed to YouTube.
- VLC Media Player installed on the computer running OBS. OBS says its VLC playlist option is available when VLC is installed. OBS Media Sources documentation
- Song files you are entitled to use in a YouTube livestream. Permission for a composition does not necessarily cover a particular recording, platform, territory, or use.
- A YouTube channel set up to create a live broadcast, plus a reliable plan to monitor the computer, network, and YouTube stream status.
OBS documents common formats for its Media Source, but the cited setup guidance does not identify a best file format, ideal playlist length, or hardware requirements for a particular library. Test your actual files and setup before depending on it.
Build a shuffled, looping playlist in OBS
- Prepare your files. Put the audio or audio-video files you have cleared for this stream in an easy-to-find folder. Keep a record of the song, recording, rights holder, and permission that applies to each file.
- Open or create an OBS scene. Choose the scene that will carry the devotional stream. Add any visuals you intend to show; the VLC playlist source can play media files, but the playlist itself does not establish a particular visual layout.
- Add a VLC Video Source. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Name the source, then add the files to its playlist. If VLC is not installed, this source may not appear. OBS’s Media Sources documentation explains that VLC can provide playlist playback.
- Turn on random order and repeat. In the source properties, enable Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist. Shuffle randomizes files instead of keeping their listed order; loop restarts the source when it reaches the end. OBS does not promise that shuffle prevents a song from repeating before every other item has played, so do not advertise the rotation as guaranteed no-repeat playback.
- Check the scene and audio. Preview the scene and listen for the expected audio level, transitions, and any unexpected silence or file errors. Check that the source is visible and not muted in the OBS audio mixer.
Connect OBS to a YouTube Live broadcast
YouTube distinguishes the broadcast—the viewer-facing event or video—from the stream carrying incoming audio and video from the encoder. This distinction matters: creating the broadcast alone does not mean OBS is already sending it. See Google’s Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live broadcast you intend to use and locate its stream connection details.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the stream key supplied for the broadcast. Treat the key as a password: do not show it on screen or share it publicly.
- Apply the settings and start streaming from OBS when you are ready to test. Use a short test first rather than treating the first connection as a dependable continuous run.
- Check YouTube’s stream status. YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle guidance describes an active stream status as confirmation that encoder output is reaching YouTube. See Life of a Broadcast.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends a short test and describes the Auto-Configuration Wizard, which takes hardware resources and network conditions into account. It can help choose a starting configuration, but it cannot certify that your particular computer and connection will remain stable around the clock.

Clear music rights before going live
YouTube says that all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. If YouTube detects licensed material, a stream may be interrupted even when you believe you have permission: the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
Confirm that your permission covers the musical composition and the specific sound recording, as well as YouTube livestreaming, the relevant territory, and your intended use. A song being devotional, widely available online, or used by another channel does not itself establish that you can broadcast it. Ask the rights holder or licensing body whether your channel needs Content ID allowlisting, and complete that process before the stream.

CCLI’s Copyright Matters guide describes licensing in a UK church context: it says Streaming and Streaming Plus licences permit livestreaming or uploading services, with Streaming Plus including song recordings. It also describes an additional PRS for Music LOML for a church website or a platform other than YouTube and Facebook. These are territory- and licence-specific examples, not universal permission. Confirm the exact repertoire, account, platform, and territory with the relevant rights holder or licensing body.
Keep the stream running and handle interruptions
An OBS/VLC setup depends on the computer, OBS, VLC, power, and internet connection staying available. The documented shuffle and loop controls handle playlist order and the end of a list; they do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 transmission. YouTube’s lifecycle documentation supports checking whether encoder output is active, but it does not provide a complete recovery plan for this particular setup.

- Have someone responsible for checking the OBS preview, audio, network, and YouTube stream status during operation.
- Decide in advance who will restart OBS or reconnect the encoder if the feed stops, and how they will check that YouTube is receiving it again.
- Keep the stream key private and know where to retrieve or replace it if access is lost.
- Check YouTube for copyright or other content warnings; restarting the encoder will not resolve a rights or allowlisting issue.
The available platform guidance does not establish current duration or archive constraints for every 24/7 broadcast configuration. Check the settings and notices in your own YouTube Studio account rather than assuming a particular continuous-stream or archive behavior.
