The strongest all-around undead-focused build under the 2014 D&D 5e rules is a School of Necromancy Wizard built around Animate Dead—without giving up the Wizard’s wider spellcasting toolkit. “Most powerful” is not an official rules ranking: how effective this build feels depends on your level, access to bodies or bones, campaign logistics, and how much time your table wants to spend managing controlled undead.
This guide uses the 2014 School of Necromancy. D&D Beyond supports both 2014 character options and revised rules; choose the rules and source books your table is using. The 2025 Necromancer subclass in Unearthed Arcana is playtest material, not a finalized replacement for the 2014 subclass.
Why choose a 2014 School of Necromancy Wizard?
A Wizard remains a full spellcaster with a broad range of answers to problems, while the School of Necromancy makes undead creation a signature part of the character’s plan. The Basic Rules describe the school this way: “Necromancy spells manipulate the energies of life and death.” (D&D Beyond’s 2014 Basic Rules.)
That combination is more useful than treating the character as a one-purpose minion generator. Undead can add pressure and occupy space, but your Wizard’s other spells still matter when creating or maintaining undead is impractical. The practical aim is to build around undead while retaining the flexibility that comes with the class.

Build the character around undead control
Choose Wizard and the 2014 School of Necromancy
Use the 2014 Wizard and its School of Necromancy subclass features. Keep the subclass and spells consistent with your table’s selected rules sources; revised rules and the 2025 playtest proposal are not interchangeable with this build.
Make Animate Dead the centerpiece
Once you can cast 3rd-level spells, Animate Dead becomes the central spell for building and sustaining your undead force. Its usefulness comes with recurring control demands, so plan around the spell slots and time needed to keep undead under control rather than assuming a one-time casting creates a permanent, free resource.

Add Create Undead at higher levels if it fits
Create Undead is a 6th-level Wizard spell, making it a later-tier option rather than an early build requirement. Consider it when your character can access the spell and your campaign can support its costly material component and control requirements.
How Animate Dead works
Animate Dead is a 3rd-level Necromancy spell with a casting time of 1 minute. It targets the bones or corpse of a Small or Medium Humanoid: bones produce a skeleton, while a corpse produces a zombie. When cast with a spell slot above 3rd level, the spell animates or reasserts control over two additional undead for each slot level above 3rd. Each creature must come from a different corpse or pile of bones. Upcasting can therefore increase the number affected in one casting, but it does not remove the need to obtain suitable remains or manage control.
Account for upkeep and table logistics
Undead control requires ongoing attention and spell resources. Before committing to a large group, work out how your character will issue commands and track the creatures, and discuss the approach with the DM. Efficient command notes and a simple tracking method are practical table habits, not special rules.

- Confirm that suitable bones or corpses are available in the campaign.
- Keep track of which undead are under control and when control must be maintained.
- Plan how to communicate commands and resolve the creatures’ turns without slowing the group’s play.
- Check that your table is comfortable with the time and attention a large number of controlled creatures can require.
What Create Undead adds
Create Undead is a 6th-level spell with a 1-minute casting time. Its material component includes one black onyx stone worth 150 GP or more for each corpse. The spell’s options and higher-level effects can provide ghouls or stronger undead, depending on the slot used. Consult the official spell listing for the precise options.
The spell lets you command the creatures as a bonus action while they are within 120 feet. If they are not commanded, they Dodge and move only to avoid harm. Control lasts 24 hours before it must be reasserted. Its component cost, range, and recurring control make it a distinct high-level tool, not a simple upgrade that removes the management involved in an undead-focused build.

Keep rules versions separate
D&D Beyond says players retain access to 2014 core-rulebook character options alongside support for revised rules in its changelog. Its SRD article uses “5e” for the 2014 rules and “5.5e” for revised rules, with an editor note dated March 2, 2026, explaining the labeling distinction (D&D Beyond, May 27, 2025). Follow the version and source books selected by your table.
Wizards of the Coast’s 2025 Unearthed Arcana: Arcane Subclasses Update proposes a substantially revised Necromancer Wizard. Its features include Necromancy Savant, Necromancy Spellbook, Grave Power, Undead Thralls, Harvest Undead, and Death’s Master. The proposal changes the subclass’s approach to an undead familiar, healing undead, and undead created with Animate Dead. Those are playtest features; do not combine them with the 2014 subclass unless your DM explicitly chooses to use the playtest rules. D&D Beyond’s overview of the proposed subclasses summarizes several of those changes.
How to judge whether the build suits your campaign
There is no verified official statistic establishing one necromancer build as universally most powerful. Instead, evaluate the character against the conditions at your table:
