Choose YouTube’s latency mode for the audience experience you need, then set a codec- and resolution-appropriate live-ingestion bitrate your upload connection can sustain. Normal latency generally favors reliable playback; low latency suits limited interaction; ultra-low latency brings viewers closer to real time but can increase buffering. YouTube’s bitrate figures are recommendations, not guarantees, so test your actual setup and monitor stream health.
Choose a latency mode for the kind of stream you’re making
Latency is the delay between capturing a moment and viewers seeing it. Lower latency can make conversation feel more immediate, but it can also increase playback buffering and make viewers more sensitive to problems on the connection sending the stream.
| Mode | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Documentaries, presentations, music, and events with little or no real-time audience interaction. | Broad support for YouTube live features and resolutions, with the lowest viewer buffering of the three modes. Choose this when steady playback matters more than immediate replies. |
| Low | Streams with occasional chat or periodic audience interaction. | YouTube characterizes latency for most viewers as less than 10 seconds; that is typical, not guaranteed. |
| Ultra-low | Live conversation or formats where rapid audience response matters. | YouTube says most viewers of an ultra-low latency stream will experience latency less than five seconds. Buffering risk is higher, and network ingestion problems affect viewers more. |
For a documentary premiere or continuous music stream, normal latency is often the practical choice unless the format depends on immediate interaction. A higher bitrate does not itself reduce latency: bitrate and latency are related configuration choices, and the connection must sustain the selected rate.
YouTube does not support low or ultra-low latency for 4K/2160p streams. If 4K is required, use normal latency.

Set a live-ingestion bitrate that matches your video
Use YouTube’s live-stream ingestion recommendations—not its separate video-upload bitrate table. The recommended rate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The values below are YouTube’s recommended video ingestion bitrates in Mbps, with the minimum values listed separately in its official encoder settings table.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p60 | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These are platform recommendations, not guaranteed results or minimum connection speeds. Your sustained upload capacity and the stream-health feedback matter. A connection that fluctuates around the selected rate may cause ingestion problems even when a brief speed test reports a higher figure. If the recommended rate is not sustainable, lower the stream’s resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again rather than choosing a fragile maximum.

Configure the encoder and connection
For its documented RTMP/RTMPS setup, YouTube recommends H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data to and through Google’s servers. Your encoder may label or expose these controls differently, so confirm its settings rather than assuming every app uses identical names.
- Match output to the source and latency mode. Select a resolution and frame rate the production actually needs. If the stream must be 4K, select normal latency; low and ultra-low modes do not support 4K.
- Choose the codec and bitrate. Use the recommendation in the table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate as a starting point. Do not substitute an upload-video bitrate value.
- Set CBR and keyframes. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, keeping the interval at or below 4 seconds.
- Use RTMPS when your encoder and workflow support it. YouTube recommends the encrypted protocol for its RTMP-based setup.
- Test the real production. Before the event, test with audio and movement similar to what you will stream. Confirm that the connection sustains the chosen bitrate and that YouTube reports a healthy stream.
- Monitor while live. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and respond to ingestion warnings. A configuration that worked in a short test may still be affected by changing network conditions during a longer event.
Account for HLS if your workflow requires it
HLS delivers video in segments rather than as a continuous stream, so YouTube describes it as higher latency than RTMP. It does not offer ultra-low latency. YouTube’s HLS requirements include TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte range. Within the permitted segment range, shorter segments lower latency, but HLS remains the higher-latency segmented option and cannot use ultra-low mode.

Diagnose buffering and stream-health problems
- Viewers report buffering in ultra-low mode: Ultra-low latency has greater buffering risk. If immediate interaction is not essential, switch to low or normal latency. Also check whether the encoder’s bitrate is sustainable on the actual upload connection.
- YouTube reports ingestion trouble: Verify the encoder is using CBR, the recommended keyframe interval, and the correct codec-specific bitrate. Test under representative conditions; reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain the selected rate.
- 4K is unavailable with the chosen latency: Set latency to normal. YouTube’s low and ultra-low modes do not support 4K/2160p.
- HLS feels slower than expected: Segmented delivery adds latency and ultra-low mode is unavailable. If HLS is required, use the shortest allowed segment duration that fits the workflow.
- The setup looks healthy in rehearsal but fails during the event: Keep monitoring stream health while live. YouTube recommends testing with comparable audio and movement, but a test cannot guarantee that network conditions remain stable throughout the event.
