How to Avoid Ticket Scams When Buying Concert or Event Tickets

Start with the event’s official ticket link. Before buying resale, verify the authorized route, ticket transfer method, total price, and applicable terms.

Start at the artist’s, venue’s, or event organizer’s official website and follow its ticket link. If you buy resale, confirm that the route is authorized for that event, understand how the ticket will be delivered, and read the seller’s current transfer and refund terms before paying. Treat requests for gift cards, wire transfers, or extra fees to change a ticket’s name or transfer it as warning signs—not proof that a seller is legitimate.

Find the event’s primary ticket seller first

The safest starting point is the event itself, not a search result, social media post, message, or advertisement. Open the artist’s, venue’s, or organizer’s official website independently, find the event listing, and follow the ticket link provided there. That route helps you identify the seller or box office the event actually uses instead of relying on a lookalike page or an unsolicited offer.

Check where the link leads

Before entering payment details, look at the destination web address and make sure it matches the seller reached through the event’s official page. A familiar logo, page design, or company name in an advertisement does not by itself establish that the site is genuine. Be especially cautious with links in messages you were not expecting, social posts offering scarce tickets, or pages that use a slightly altered spelling of a seller’s name.

If the event page links to a ticketing service, use that link rather than trying to find a supposedly equivalent listing elsewhere. If you are unsure whether a seller is connected to the event, contact the venue or organizer using contact details from its official website and ask which purchase and resale routes it recognizes. Do not rely on contact information supplied by the person selling the ticket.

Understand what a primary purchase can and cannot establish

Ticketmaster says, “The only way to know your tickets are authentic is to buy directly from Ticketmaster or the venue box office.” That is Ticketmaster’s statement about its own ability to verify tickets: it says it cannot verify tickets bought from a third party. It should not be read as a universal guarantee covering every event, box office, or ticket seller. Confirm the actual event’s arrangements and the seller’s terms.

A purchase through a primary seller reduces the uncertainty of buying from an unknown individual, but it does not eliminate the need to read the event details. Check the date, venue, section, row, seat or admission type, and any restrictions shown before paying. Make sure you are looking at the correct performance if an event has multiple dates or sessions.

Compare ticket routes before you pay

When more than one listing appears, compare the route and the terms—not just the displayed price or the platform’s familiarity. The event organizer or primary provider is the best place to confirm whether a particular resale channel is authorized for that event. “Listed on a familiar marketplace” and “verified by the original ticket provider” are not interchangeable claims.

Route What to establish What is not established by the route alone
Primary seller linked from the event’s official website Confirm that the event page links to this seller, then review the event details, checkout total, and purchase terms. A link to the seller does not make every event’s refund, transfer, or cancellation terms identical; read the terms for the specific ticket.
Resale route identified by the organizer or original provider Confirm that the route is permitted for the event. Check how delivery works, whether you need an account in the original provider’s app, and when transfer is expected. Authorization alone does not establish that every listing is available now, that transfer is immediate, or that every problem will receive a refund. Check the route’s current terms.
Resale listing not identified by the event or original provider Ask the organizer or primary seller whether this route is authorized and what transfer method the ticket should use before paying. A listing, seller rating, screenshot, or promise is not by itself proof that the seller possesses a valid, transferable ticket or that the route offers a particular remedy.

Compare the full checkout price

Review the complete price shown at checkout, including fees, before confirming the purchase. Compare the total for the same event, date, ticket type, and seating area; an initial listing price alone is not a like-for-like comparison. Keep a copy of the order confirmation and the terms shown when you buy so you can refer to what was actually purchased.

Price-display practices have also been part of a pending federal case, but that case does not tell you what a particular ticket should cost. The Federal Trade Commission’s case page says the FTC and seven states filed suit against Live Nation Entertainment, Inc. and Ticketmaster, LLC on September 18, 2025, alleging practices concerning advertised prices, ticket limits, and resale tickets. The case page’s latest listed update, September 30, 2026, showed the case as pending. Those are plaintiffs’ allegations, not established court findings. Check the event’s current checkout total and terms rather than treating the litigation as a finding about an individual listing.

If you buy resale, verify delivery and transfer details

Before paying, find out exactly how the ticket will reach you. Ask whether it will be transferred through the original ticket provider’s app or account, whether you need to create an account there, and when the transfer should become available. For Ticketmaster’s described third-party resale orders, the seller transfers mobile tickets from the original ticket provider’s app; buyers may need that app and an account. Availability and timing can vary by event.

Check the expected transfer route before accepting anything

  1. Confirm the event’s resale rules. Use the event organizer’s or venue’s official information to check whether resale is allowed and whether a particular resale route is recognized.
  2. Ask how the ticket will be delivered. Identify the original provider and the app or account that should show the ticket. If the stated delivery method conflicts with the event’s or provider’s instructions, pause and verify it independently.
  3. Clarify timing. Ask when the transfer should arrive and whether event-specific restrictions affect the transfer window. A delayed transfer is not automatically fraud; release dates and transfer restrictions can vary. But a vague promise with no verifiable timing or route is a reason to check before paying.
  4. Use the official provider’s app or site to inspect a transfer. Do not treat a picture sent by the seller as a substitute for a ticket appearing through the expected account or app. Follow the provider’s instructions for accepting and viewing the ticket.
  5. Read the resale seller’s current terms. Find out who handles a missed transfer, an invalid ticket, a changed event, or a cancellation, and what deadlines or documentation apply. Do not assume that one platform’s terms apply to another.

For a Ticketmaster resale order, Ticketmaster describes transfer from the original provider’s app. That helps explain the delivery route; it is not a universal promise that every resale ticket is transferable, that every transfer arrives at the same time, or that a transfer guarantees admission. Availability, event rules, refund coverage, and transfer timing vary. Read the terms that apply to the specific listing and event.

How do I confirm if my tickets are valid or authentic?

Use the original provider’s official app or website and the event’s instructions to check whether the ticket has been delivered to the account that will be used for entry. Confirm that the event, date, and ticket details match your order. If the ticket is a resale transfer, follow the provider’s official acceptance process rather than relying on an image or a seller’s description.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

There is no reliable authenticity check based only on a screenshot, barcode image, confirmation-looking email, or seller assurance. A screenshot can be copied or reused, and it does not establish that the seller controls a ticket that can be transferred to you. Ticketmaster says it cannot verify tickets bought from a third party. If the ticket does not appear through the expected provider, contact the provider or event organizer through contact details on its official website before traveling to the venue.

Keep your order confirmation, payment record, seller communications, and any transfer notices. These records do not prove that a ticket is valid, but they can help you explain what happened if you need to contact the seller or pursue a remedy under the applicable terms.

Recognize payment requests that should make you stop

Ticketmaster states that it will never request gift cards or wire transfers for ticket payment, and will not charge a fee for changing a name or transferring tickets. These are Ticketmaster-specific warnings, not a universal statement about every business or every kind of event charge. If someone claiming to represent Ticketmaster asks for one of these payments, stop and independently contact Ticketmaster through its official site.

  • Gift cards or gift-card codes: Do not buy or send gift cards because a purported ticket representative says that is how to pay, release a transfer, or receive a refund.
  • Wire transfer: Treat a wire-transfer demand from someone claiming to be Ticketmaster as a red flag. Verify the request using official contact details rather than replying to the message.
  • A fee for a name change or transfer: Ticketmaster says it will not charge a fee for changing a name or transferring tickets. A demand for such a fee from someone claiming to be Ticketmaster warrants independent verification.
  • Urgency or a new payment method introduced mid-transaction: A seller’s pressure is not proof of fraud, but it is a reason to pause rather than send money before you can check the route and terms.

Do not follow payment instructions simply because a message uses an event or ticketing company’s branding. Find the official website independently, navigate to support from there, and ask whether the request is genuine. For a purchase from another seller, contact that seller using the channel listed on its official website and review the terms for the order.

Handle suspicious emails, messages, and websites safely

If an email or site claims to be Ticketmaster and seems suspicious, Ticketmaster advises users not to enter information, click links, open attachments, or reply. This is a prudent way to avoid handing credentials or payment details to an impersonator while you verify the message separately.

  1. Stop interacting with the message. Do not use its links, phone numbers, attachments, or reply address to verify it.
  2. Open the official site independently. Type the known address yourself or use a trusted bookmark, then navigate to support. Check the current reporting instructions there.
  3. Report suspected impersonation through the company’s stated channel. Ticketmaster tells users to forward suspected impersonation emails to [email protected]. Confirm the address and instructions on Ticketmaster’s official site before sending anything; do not include sensitive account or payment information unless the official instructions call for it.
  4. If you entered credentials or payment details, act through the genuine service. Go to the official provider or payment company independently, secure the affected account, and ask what steps apply to your situation. Do not use a follow-up message from the suspicious sender as your recovery channel.

A message can look convincing without being genuine, and an unfamiliar message is not made safe by mentioning a real event or order. Conversely, a delayed or unexpected ticket notification is not proof of impersonation; check it through the provider’s official app or website rather than deciding from the message alone.

Understand speculative listings and delayed delivery

Ticketmaster describes a speculative ticket as a listing for a ticket the seller does not actually have. The practical risk is that a seller who has not obtained the ticket may be unable to transfer it. A listing is an offer, not evidence that a transferable ticket already exists.

Do not confuse every delayed delivery with a speculative listing or scam. Some events have release dates or transfer restrictions, and ticket availability can vary. Check the event’s official information and the resale route’s stated delivery timing. If a seller cannot explain the expected source and transfer method, or asks you to rely on a screenshot until a ticket supposedly appears, verify the arrangement before paying.

Refunds and event changes depend on the specific terms

There is no universal resale refund rule established by the sources for this guide. Ticketmaster’s purchase policy says procedures depend on organizer authorization and event circumstances. For any purchase, read the current policy for the actual ticket and identify who handles a cancellation, postponement, change, or ticket problem. Check whether the policy applies to primary purchases, resale purchases, or both, and whether it sets deadlines or requires particular documentation.

Do not infer that a ticket is covered merely because it appears on a platform, that every invalid ticket will be refunded, or that the original ticket provider is responsible for a third-party transaction. The seller’s and event’s applicable terms determine what process is available. Save the terms and order details that apply at the time of purchase.

Federal ticket-law context

The FTC describes the Better Online Ticket Sales Act as addressing the circumvention of ticket purchase limits and the resale of tickets obtained through such circumvention. That law is relevant context for how certain ticket-buying practices are addressed; it is not an authenticity check for an individual ticket, nor does it tell a buyer whether a particular resale route is authorized for a particular event.

Separately, the FTC case page reports that the FTC and seven states filed suit against Live Nation Entertainment, Inc. and Ticketmaster, LLC on September 18, 2025, over alleged advertised-price, ticket-limit, and resale practices. Its latest listed update on September 30, 2026 showed the case as pending. These remain allegations in a pending case, not findings of fact. The case does not replace checking the full price, event authorization, transfer route, and current terms for the ticket you are considering.

Quick Recap

A practical checklist before you buy

  • Did you reach the seller from the artist’s, venue’s, or organizer’s official event page?
  • If it is resale, can you verify that the route is authorized for this event?
  • Do you know which provider’s app or account should receive the ticket, whether you need an account, and when transfer is expected?
  • Have you checked the event, date, seat or admission details, and the full checkout price?
  • Have you read the seller’s current refund, cancellation, and transfer terms for this ticket?
  • Is anyone asking for gift cards, a wire transfer, or an unusual fee while claiming to represent Ticketmaster? If so, stop and verify independently through the official site.
  • Are you relying on a screenshot or promise rather than a ticket delivered through the expected provider’s process? If so, do not treat that as proof of authenticity.
