How to Audit Hugging Face Repositories for Malicious Model Files

Hugging Face scan badges are useful signals, not a safety guarantee. Audit the exact commit, inspect files and custom code, and treat pickle checkpoints with particular caution before loading.

To check a Hugging Face model for malware, review the exact repository commit you plan to use—not just the model card or a scanner badge. Inventory the files, check their scan status, treat pickle-based checkpoints and repository code as execution risks, and record the commit hash you reviewed. Hugging Face’s scans are useful triage, not proof that a repository is safe.

What a repository audit can—and cannot—tell you

A Hugging Face repository may contain more than model weights. It can also include configuration and tokenizer files, custom Python modules, scripts, notebooks, setup instructions, and archives. Any of these can affect what happens when you download or load a model. The practical question is not simply whether the repository has a warning; it is whether the exact files and revision you intend to use are understood and acceptable for your situation.

Keep three kinds of evidence separate:

  • Platform scan results: Hugging Face reports malware and pickle-scan information for repository files. These results help identify concerns, but they have coverage and detection limits.
  • Static inspection: Reviewing file paths, code, configuration, and scanner findings without executing the artifacts can reveal what the repository appears to do. Static review is not a guarantee that every behavior has been found.
  • A safety decision: Whether you trust a repository depends on the files, their source and revision, what you plan to load, and the consequences of a mistake. A clean scan or familiar publisher name alone does not establish that the content is benign.

Hugging Face’s Malware Scanning documentation says files smaller than 2 GB are scanned for malware at each commit. The 2 GB figure is a file-size boundary, not a claim about the proportion of malicious files or the accuracy of detection. A file without an ok or infected badge may be waiting to be scanned, currently scanning, or affected by an error. The documentation specifically warns that a missing badge is not a clean result.

For pickle files, Hugging Face describes a scan that extracts referenced imports from pickle instructions using Python’s pickletools, without executing the pickle. The visible imports and warnings can guide review, but the documentation calls the approach not foolproof and describes its safe and unsafe import lists as best-effort. Do not treat a scan result as a substitute for deciding whether you should load a file.

How do I inspect a Hugging Face repository before loading it?

Start in the repository’s web page. Review the file list and paths, open the repository history to identify the revision you intend to audit, and inspect the file-level scan indicators and findings available there. Record the full commit hash, not merely a branch name such as main: a branch can point to a different commit later.

Before you assess the files, write down what you intend to do with the repository. A user who only needs a compatible tensor checkpoint has a different exposure from one who plans to enable repository-supplied code. Your intended task determines which files matter and what risks you are accepting.

  1. Identify the object of review. Record the repository owner and name, intended task, review date, and full commit hash shown in the repository history. If you have only identified a mutable branch, you have not yet fixed the exact object you reviewed.
  2. Inventory the entire file list. Note weights, tokenizer and configuration files, custom Python modules, scripts, notebooks, setup or installation files, archives, and anything unexpected. Treat code and setup instructions as possible execution decisions, not harmless documentation.
  3. Check the status of each relevant file. Look for malware badges, pickle findings, and third-party scanner results. If a badge is missing, check whether a scan is pending, running, or errored; do not record the file as clean simply because no warning is visible.
  4. Examine what your planned load would use. Determine whether the chosen checkpoint is pickle-based, whether the model requires custom repository code, and whether a suitable non-pickle checkpoint is available. Configuration and code can matter even when the weight file itself is not pickle-based.
  5. Write down a decision for each concern. Record the path, commit, scan status or finding, and your static-review conclusion. If a file is unexplained, flagged, or still unscanned, do not load it in a trusted environment while you resolve the concern.

This process is an inspection workflow, not a command to run the model as a test. In particular, do not try an untrusted artifact by calling pickle.load, using torch.load with unsafe settings, or issuing a model-loading command just to see what happens. Deserialization itself can be the point at which code executes.

Which repository files deserve the closest review?

Prioritize files that can be interpreted as code, files that control loading, and files that will be deserialized. The filename alone does not prove what a file contains, but it is a useful inventory starting point.

File or material Why it matters Audit action
Pickle-based weights, including PyTorch .bin checkpoints Python pickle deserialization can invoke imports, functions, or constructors, creating arbitrary-code execution risk. Hugging Face’s Pickle Scanning documentation says its import analysis is not foolproof. Check the pickle findings and referenced imports. Prefer a compatible .safetensors checkpoint when one exists; do not deserialize an untrusted file merely to inspect it.
Custom Python modules or other repository code Some models use code supplied by the repository rather than only standard library architectures. Transformers’ custom-code guidance associates this case with trust_remote_code=True. Inspect the relevant code and its dependencies, consider the author and commit history, and use only the exact reviewed commit if you decide to proceed.
Configuration and tokenizer files These files help determine which architecture and artifacts the intended load uses; configuration may direct Transformers to custom code. Read them as part of the inventory. Check whether they point to repository code or a checkpoint you have not reviewed.
Scripts, notebooks, setup files, and archives They may contain code or instructions that change the execution path. Their presence is not proof of malicious intent, but running them is a separate trust decision. Do not run setup instructions or notebook cells by default. Identify their purpose and whether your task actually requires them.

A model card can explain intended use, architecture, or provenance, but it does not replace this file-level review. Conversely, an unusual or unfamiliar file is a reason to investigate, not by itself proof that the repository is malicious.

How should I interpret Hugging Face’s scan results?

Read the status as a status for a specific file and revision, not as a blanket verdict on the whole repository. Malware scanning is triggered at each commit, but Hugging Face’s documented coverage applies to files smaller than 2 GB. The documentation does not establish that every larger file receives the same scan coverage. A repository can also contain multiple file types with different risks, so one result does not answer every question about the other files.

  • ok: The file has a positive scan status, but that is not proof of safety. It does not validate the repository’s provenance, demonstrate that custom code is harmless, or eliminate risks not detected by the scan.
  • infected: Treat the finding as a reason not to load or execute the file in a trusted environment. Consider the file path and finding, and seek clarification or a safer alternative rather than trying it to verify the warning.
  • No badge: The Malware Scanning documentation says this can mean the file is waiting for a scan, being scanned, or that an error occurred. Resolve the status or treat it as unverified; absence of a badge is not an implicit pass.

For pickle findings, look at the imports the scan reports and the context of the file. Those details can help focus a static review, but an import appearing in a scan is not by itself a full explanation of the file’s behavior. Equally, the absence of a concerning import in the visible results does not prove that deserializing the artifact is safe. Hugging Face states: “Disclaimer: this is not 100% foolproof. It is your responsibility as a user to check if something is safe or not.” That is the appropriate way to interpret the scanner: as one input to a decision you still own.

Why pickle checkpoints need special caution

Pickle is a Python serialization format, and unpickling is not equivalent to reading inert tensor data. A pickle can reference imports and invoke functions or constructors during deserialization. That means an unsafe artifact can create a code-execution risk at load time, before you have used the model for inference.

A PyTorch .bin checkpoint may be pickle-based. Do not assume a weight file is safe because it is presented as a model artifact or because a loading example is provided on the repository page. The relevant question is what format the chosen file uses and what happens when your chosen loading path deserializes it.

When a compatible .safetensors checkpoint is available, it avoids pickle’s arbitrary-code deserialization behavior for tensor weights and is generally the better choice for that risk. Hugging Face also documents conversion options for existing weights. Conversion is a format mitigation, not an endorsement of the source: it does not establish provenance, make repository code trustworthy, or validate the metadata. It is not a reason to run an untrusted pickle through an unsafe conversion process.

What changes when a model needs custom code?

Some repositories provide a custom architecture or implementation that Transformers cannot handle using its standard library architecture alone. In that situation, a loading configuration may require trust_remote_code=True. That option is an explicit decision to load code from the model repository; it should not be enabled just to get past a warning or make a model load.

  1. Identify the repository files the configuration and intended loading path rely on.
  2. Read the relevant code and dependencies before enabling custom code. Review the author and commit history as part of assessing provenance and changes.
  3. Choose the exact commit you reviewed. Transformers guidance recommends using a specific revision for custom code so that later changes do not silently change what gets loaded.
  4. If you cannot explain the code’s role or do not accept what it does, do not enable it. Ask the publisher for clarification or look for a compatible option that does not require the repository code.

Pinning the revision makes the reviewed code stable for your decision; it does not make that code safe. Likewise, a publisher identity or signed commit may help establish where content came from, but Hugging Face’s Pickle Scanning documentation notes that signed commits establish origin, not that content is inherently safe.

How do third-party scanner findings fit into the audit?

Hugging Face documents integrations that expose additional scanner signals in the Hub. Protect AI Guardian is described as covering pickle, Keras, and other exploits in public repositories. JFrog is described as parsing detected code to assess potential malicious use and exposing findings in the Hub. These are additional triage inputs: inspect the actual finding and the associated file rather than treating any single clean result as a safety guarantee.

Signal What the documentation describes How to use it
Hugging Face malware scan Scans files smaller than 2 GB at each commit; the Malware Scanning documentation says missing status can mean pending, running, or an error. Check each relevant file’s status at the revision you are reviewing. Treat absent status as unresolved.
Hugging Face pickle scan Extracts referenced imports from pickle instructions with pickletools without executing the pickle; the Pickle Scanning documentation says the approach is not foolproof. Use reported imports and warnings to focus review, not as proof that deserialization is safe.
Protect AI Guardian Hugging Face describes coverage of pickle, Keras, and other exploits in public repositories. Read the finding and file context as an additional signal, not a substitute for reviewing what you will execute.
JFrog Hugging Face describes parsing detected code to assess potential malicious use and surfacing findings in the Hub. Correlate a finding with the code and revision; do not equate a clean result with a safety verdict.

When scanner results disagree, do not average them into a reassuring score. Determine which file and revision each result concerns, what the finding actually says, and whether the file is required for your intended use. An unresolved conflict is a reason to pause, not a reason to select the most reassuring signal.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Choose an approach based on what you need to load

Decision point Lower-exposure direction Remaining question
Weight format Use a compatible .safetensors checkpoint rather than a pickle-based checkpoint when available. Have you reviewed the repository code, metadata, and source revision separately?
Architecture implementation Prefer a path that does not require repository-supplied custom code when it meets your task. If custom code is required, have you inspected it and pinned the reviewed commit?
Revision selection Use the full reviewed commit hash rather than a moving branch reference. Does your loading setup actually use that same revision for the relevant files?
Scanner visibility Correlate available malware, pickle, and third-party findings. Are any relevant files pending, missing a status, errored, or outside the documented size coverage?
Provenance Consider the publisher and available origin evidence as context. Have you inspected what the files do? Origin evidence alone does not prove benign content.

“Lower exposure” is not the same as “safe.” It means one specific risk is reduced or one uncertainty is better controlled; the other questions still need their own answers.

When should you stop the audit and not load the repository?

Pause rather than proceeding in a trusted environment if a relevant file is flagged, unexplained, or not yet scanned and you cannot otherwise assess it. The same applies when custom code is required but has not been reviewed, or when the only available weights require a deserialization path you are unwilling to trust.

  • Ask the publisher to explain a file or finding, or seek a compatible checkpoint that reduces the risk.
  • If you decide loading is justified, keep it isolated from a trusted environment and retain the exact revision identifier with the audit record.

The cited scanner documentation does not prescribe a universal acceptance threshold. Set criteria that match your threat model: what the model will access, what a compromise could affect, and what evidence you require before trusting a file. Be explicit in the audit record about what you inspected and what remains uncertain.

A compact audit record to keep

Document enough detail that another reviewer—or you at a later date—can tell precisely what was examined and why the decision was made. A useful record includes:

  • Repository owner/name and intended task.
  • Review date and full commit hash.
  • Relevant file paths and formats, including whether the selected weights are pickle-based or .safetensors.
  • Malware badge and status for each relevant file; note a pending, missing, or errored result rather than silently treating it as clean.
  • Pickle and third-party findings, including the file each finding concerns.
  • Whether custom code is required, what code and dependencies you reviewed, and whether the chosen load uses trust_remote_code=True.
  • Your conclusion for each concern, any unresolved questions, and the reason you decided to proceed, seek clarification, or stop.

This record keeps the decision tied to a particular revision. If the repository changes, a previous audit describes the old commit—not the new one.
